It makes no sense in the established universe, and not even a strict renegade playthrough yields a Shepherd that would force such a huge evolution on the galaxy. None of the endings really make sense, though.

When the Vengeance first shows up? Khan just finished telling them about how Marcus was coming to kill them all and take him back. In TWoK, Kirk had no clue something had gone wrong except a jammed transmission from the space station, which could be caused by any number of reasons. In the shows and movies, raising shields is universally seen as an aggressive action.
Oh shit you're right, my bad. I was confused by the bees. But yeah, I was specifying that never in the shows or movies (iirc) has a federation ship raised shields when another federation ship didn't respond. There wasn't really a precedent for Kirk doing that in TWoK, though maybe it was supposed to show that he was getting old and overconfident.

i can't wait to get around playing the mass effect series, only to discover that ME3's ending wasn't all that bad
Thematically, it's terrible. It's a very sudden (and very literal) deus ex machina that basically rewrites the story's lore and gives three options which (at release) were exactly the same cutscenes with different color filters (the files in the game actually label them as "blue", "green", or "red"). Definitely do play the series; everything up to the final encounter is basically perfect, as far as video games go.

tbh I like all of them, even Enterprise. I actually liked Enterprise's theme, because I'm a piece of shit. Voyager is good shit, and tried hard to not be TNG 2.0, which is where it gets most of its hate. DS9 is safe and kind of boring to me, but it's all about characters and drama, which was a good focus for the series. TOS is classic and was revolutionary at the time, without feeling like tokenism. When was Kirk ever a good captain? It seems like every episode he was loosing people and then there's his stupidity in the Khan movie. All he needed to do was raise his ships shields and the movie would have ended right then and there.
The worst part is it was standard protocol to raise shields anytime an encroaching ship fails to respond to hails.
Except that was never done in any Trek show or movie to date. They were at a Federation space station being protected by a Federation ship whose leadership Kirk new personally. And then the obvious response is that it was it was a necessary plot device, and they could have written it however they needed to.

They have. The Marine Corps has already accepted two enlisted Marines into infantry roles; no woman has ever passed IOC. There are already female Army officers and enlisted personnel in infantry.
Good. No requirements should be lowered for women - they should have to pass everything that a man has to. But if they do, and then are still denied enlistment, that's straight-up discrimination.
There's a lot of controversy around those that have passed, like reports that they were basically pushed through the pipeline despite failing multiple hikes and other tests.

I just finished Priority: Rannoch, so I'm about to wrap up the game for my second playthrough, and so far it really is a 10/10 game. Polished combat, unparalleled story and writing, a solid multiplayer experience, etc. There are so many amazing moments (or terrible ones, based on your choices) in the game, and after the suicide mission from ME2 it's fucking insane how badly they ended the series. I'm actually dreading finishing it because of the sour taste I'm sure it'll leave behind. All they needed to do was end it right after talking to Anderson, show a long cutscene showing how your fleet does and all the consequences of your choices, and then let you go right into the Citadel DLC, which is a perfect epilogue for the game.
Fuck. I just hope they improve in Andromeda.

You have a right to not be discriminated against.
No, you don't. You have a right not to be discriminated against based on sex, religion, ethnicity, etc., but every employer discriminates: a marketing firm discriminates against applicants that have no sales experience, and the infantry discriminates against all candidates that can't meet physical and mental standards. As a result, women are currently barred from the infantry because it's been shown time and time again that there are exceedingly few who can even pass to women's standards let alone men's, and the logistical ramifications of catering to a minuscule minority outweigh the benefit of including them, not even mentioning the psychological impact of having women in the field.

There's more requirements to serving in the military than accuracy. But if a woman is able to meet every one of those requirements to the extent that a man is, it's a miscarriage of human rights to deny her enlistment. End of story.
Military service--especially in the infantry--isn't a right, though. Effectively no women would be able to be competitive against men's standards, and their standards are already drastically lower (e.g., a male that couldn't do 3 pullups would be laughed out the door). And then, assuming there are women that are physically comparable to men, that incredibly low number would lead to disproportionately high costs for separate berthing.

People--be it individuals or societies--need to feel in control of change. Iraq was such a disaster because of Paul Bremer's asinine policies which effectively dissolved all legitimate power in the country, requiring a decade of work just to try to bring it back to its condition immediately following the (highly successful) invasion. And it's bullshit to say it's never worked; look at Germany, Japan, Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan, and even Vietnam, to some extent.

Coffee steeps better when the water is hot or near boiling point. Like certain teas, beers, and other beverages, you will withdraw less of the juice at lower temperatures. In return, you apply more grounds.
Why not just brew a pot of hot coffee and let it sit in the fridge overnight?
