Serious / Re: Should the burden of proof be a logical fallacy anymore?
« on: August 31, 2016, 11:50:08 AM »
It should follow logically that if the universe is deterministic, there is no statement that can't be proven; we're solely limited by our ability to observe. This is also a reason why hypotheses should be rigorously formulated, and why science is a process of revision, rather than proof.

Quite a bit of science, especially in statistical analysis, is solely concerned with supporting negative statements (e.g. a statistician cannot affirm a hypothesis, but can merely reject the opposing hypothesis). Additionally, any positive statement can easily be restated as a negative.

I call it Smow

Like you Smow the lawn

iirc this is how it's pronounced in the Japanese, and is a supposed to sound similar to "sumo" because he's so fat.

the flu vaccine is a joke.

Just in case anyone's thinking this might be true, please get the flu vaccine. It saves thousands of children and elderly people each year, and herd immunity applies.
Except that's a fucking lie, and 100% government propaganda.

25,000 die each year because of the flu. How does it feel to personally contribute to those deaths?

It's a free upgrade on Steam because it seems like it's just 1080p/60fps, which has been available on PC since day 1.

I think Nolan's trilogy could have been interpreted as a setup for the older, more experienced Batman seen in BvS, but by itself they're not a great presentation of the character and the Nolanverse definitely wasn't ready for a Justice League. If the trilogy had dated itself a couple decades (say, ending in the late 80s), omitting the middle of his career and jumping right into a more mature Batman that's been through a Robin or two, it could've worked.

I find I hear all I need to from talk on campus and on imageboards.

Do you believe this results in an informed, well-rounded opinion of current events?

« on: August 30, 2016, 10:01:54 AM »
About a year ago I started getting back into print media, filling gaps with online journals or podcasts. Each Saturday I usually get the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal and NY Times, each day I listen to NPR to and from work, and sometimes use an RSS feed to look for daily news. For me:

Liberal:
-NY Times (print)
-NPR (radio/occasional)
-The Atlantic
-Jacobin

Conservative:
-WSJ
-The Economist
-City Journal
-Cato Institute
-Various people like Heather Mac Donald, Peggy Noonan, etc.

I'm just interested to see what people here listen to. There have been a lot of Serious threads about news articles, but not much on sources or authors themselves beyond some fringe personalities.

Is there a leading alternative that isn't just another form of partial capitalism seen in most countries?
Nope.

The argument is more than policy tweaks and directional changes are appropriate given the changing nature of developed economies, rather than some systemic change. I'd be surprised if the author was even advocating a change away from a liberal market to a co-ordinated market.

This seems like a common sense answer. What're your thoughts on the popular liberal idea that communism is the eventual (and soon) state the economy will reach post-capitalism? I've always regarded it as an unfounded excuse for opponents of capitalism to gracefully accept that communism is a failed experiment.

I found Civ 5 pretty monotonous and repetitive, but I like other, more action-oriented strategy games; how long do Stellaris games last and is it fairly fast-paced?

I'm not sure I can recall ever hearing that sentiment. Maybe in regards to taking older games with a grain of salt because of modern bias, e.g., Pong would be little more than a freshman programmer's practice problem to design, but was a great achievement at the time.

The peter/valentine stuff has kinda just kicked off with Locke/Demosthenes and it was a biiiiiiiiiit of a stretch to me how quickly and neatly they seemed to achieve their aims (in progress so keeping it vague for spoilers) but it's intriguing all the same.

Keep in mind it was written before the internet became big, so the idea that people could really change the world through forums and blogs was a realistic ideal. But yeah, they don't seem to encounter the struggles that Ender does, and it's one of the weaker aspects of the book. I think you'll find the ending more compelling than in the movie; the whole thing felt rushed, and they kept giving it away by showing a huge countdown to the big fight. And it basically left out great characters like Bean and Petra, turning them into boring sidekicks.

I'm actually reading that at the moment, it's pretty damn good.

It's my favorite book. Is it your first time reading it?
Yep, got it at christmas I think but I've been busy with the dune series up until now. Finished all of the original dune books about two weeks ago I think.

It's very well written, kinda surprised me how easily I fell into it.

The dune series could be a little heavy at times, it takes a lot for me to put down a book because I'm too tired to actually read/understand it and they managed it a few times. Good books though, thoroughly enjoyed the God-Emperor of Dune and seeing how the author mixed his ecologist background with the philosophical ones to make 'the long view' a central theme to the whole series.

I'm about halfway through Ender's Game but I have seen the film so I think that's probably going to mess with reading it for the first time but either way it's a great look at smart-bastard children and how they deal with the world.

It's kind of a shame that the movie gave away the surprise for you, but I think it was okay in that sense. I'm sure the Peter/Valentine stuff was weird for you since it was omitted from the movie. I think Asa Butterfield did a decent job playing Ender, but all of the other characters weren't very accurate.

I keep forgetting to read Dune, and I'm pretty sure you've recommended it to me before. I'll put it on the list.

of the last 21 accounts retweeted by @RealDonaldTrump so far this week, our automated analysis of their accounts finds that:

28% of them follow at least one of the top 50 White Nationalist accounts on Twitter (6 of 21)
62% of them follow at least 3 people who’ve used hashtag #WhiteGenocide lately (13 of 21)

Hey guys, it turns out retweeting someone either following another person who has used the hashtag WhiteGenocide or following a top 50 white supremacist (which isn't even a thing, by any metric) makes you a white supremacist! This is like some Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon shit going on here.

There are so many legitimate criticisms of Trump that it's just pathetic to see the left resorting to calling anyone even slightly outside of their camp a racist, sexist bigot.

Don't see the issue with this really, if I remember right unemployment for Muslim women was a tad bit higher than the average, and if it means more people join up I'm all for it.
We have an official uniform for a reason.

And now it's been amended. Historically, allowing European immigrants into the police force is largely what allowed them to integrate into American society in the early 90s; this should be seen as a good thing by anyone that recognizes the growing trend of radicalization in the country.
Okay, but allowing immigrants into the police force hasn't really got anything to do with official dress code.
It does when that dress code is a barrier to that demographic joining.

I'm not sure why knowing me should exempt someone from being held accountable for their actions. And, he's a shitty friend for potentially making me an accessory to his crimes.
