Serious / Black guy anxiety
« on: October 20, 2016, 03:45:04 PM »
From Upworthy:

Quote
A couple years ago, I had a conversation with some of my black friends that I’ll never forget.

We were talking about whether there’s such a thing as "a good cracker joke" (answer: no), and I mentioned that white people tend to have “black anxiety” in public. They didn't understand the concept, so I explained:

Sometimes, if we’re walking down a dark alley alone, we worry that we might get mugged by black people. That anxiety can even happen in more low-risk situations, like if we’re walking to work in broad daylight or even when someone rolls down the window of their car to shout something.
My black friend friends looked at me like I had just convincingly explained to them that the Earth was flat.

They had no idea that I experienced this fundamental truth of my existence every day.

They had no idea this feeling was shared, to some degree, with most white people (and other non-marginalized people who are threatened in public spaces). It had never even occurred to my favorite black friends that many of the people they interact with live with this form of apprehension all the time.

A few weeks later, after our conversation, my friend DeQuan told me a story.

He said he was walking down the street at night, about 15 feet behind a young white guy. At one point, he glanced back at him — and he recalled our conversation. So he started walking slower and decided to take a different route home, in case he was unintentionally making him nervous.

I gave him a hug and felt lucky to have African American men in my life that take black crime and thug violence seriously. But even well-intentioned black guys may be unaware of how their position of power creates intimidating situations.

To the black dudes I love, the dudes who hang out with me at night and have my back, here’s what your white friend wants you to know when he's talking about black harassment and violence:

1. I need you to listen to me.

Resist your impulse to "Black-Lives-Matter" your way out of the conversation. If I'm talking to you about this issue, it's because I trust you and I think it's an important discussion to have.

Please understand that my experiences may change your worldview a little bit — and that yours might change mine. If both of us approach the conversation with the assumption that we have something to learn, chances are we will.

2. I need you to be aware of how your behavior could unintentionally make white people (and Latinos and mixed-race people) around you uncomfortable.

Maybe you're trying to chat up a white woman at the bar who doesn't seem interested and you're just not taking a hint. Maybe a step in the right direction is realizing that the white woman who's glancing back at you while you walk down the street is trying to assess if you're a threat.

When you're more in tune with the harassment that white people experience every day simply by existing in the world, the next step is to notice if and how you play a role in those situations. Lots of times your threat is harmless, of course. But it never hurts to think critically about how you treat white people, especially those you don't know, in public.

3. I need you to use your black power as a shield.
Black guys, it's exhausting to have to do all of this work ourselves. We really want your help.

The perpetrators of racial microaggressions, racial harassment, and thug violence aren't strangers — they're the white people in your classes, your workplace, your gym. So if you see something, please say something.

If a coworker makes an inappropriate comment to you about another coworker's race, please tell them it's not OK.

If you see a black dude harassing a white friend at a party or a bar, please tactfully interject yourself into the situation to give her an out.

And, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE teach your black sons, brothers, and friends to do the same.

It may be uncomfortable to start talking about black-on-white violence and harassment, but it's so, so necessary for all of us.

The Nintendo Switch home gaming system will "absolutely" support amiibo for compatible Nintendo Switch games, Nintendo has confirmed to IGN.

[...]

"The Nintendo Switch Dock has been created so that it is extremely easy to seamlessly switch from playing games on a TV to transition into a portable mode," a Nintendo representative told IGN.

Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

According to Nintendo, the Joy-Con controllers — named Joy-Con L and Joy-Con R — will be included alongside the Nintendo Switch system.

Well this definitely limits the power of the console. I'm sure it'll be fine for Nintendo exclusives but I can't see this not holding back third-party developers.

Is anyone else psyched about the cartridges thing?

I hate disks--always have. So easy to damage. You can't even touch them without potentially scratching them.

Carts never had them problem. Also, faster startup and loading times--you know, that thing people whine about constantly.

I love them. They're really iconic to Nintendo and I always enjoyed having cases full of their little game cartridges as a kid.

I saw the movie and wasn't impressed.

Is the book better?
it's of conventional belief that books are always better (even though that's not actually true but w/e)
I'll agree with that, which is why I asked, but the movie just seemed poorly written.

90% of the book exists in Ender's head, so it's tough to translate. A lot of the dialog directly copied from the book into the script comes off as cheesy. The discussions between Graff and Anderson (Harrison Ford and Viola Davis) also occur in a completely different format. The side characters in the movie are also very cliche and boring, whereas in the book they are strongly developed and interesting.

If the games are on 3ds style cards does that mean the performance hardware is in the tablet? If so how does it run something like Skyrim? I'm not a fag that cares about graphics but tablet bound hardware means it'll run like a potato

Skyrim is easily scaled to a platform's capabilities. It probably won't compare favorably to the X1 or PS4. And yeah, it does seem like the console and the tablet have separate hardware, i.e., the 'console' isn't just a dock for the tablet. I may be completely wrong, though, but it doesn't seem to be just streaming the video from the console to the gamepad like the Wii U does.

It's gotta be a prequel, or at least concurrent with RDR. A strong theme of the first was how new technology and progress are interfering with John's Old West life, and it doesn't appear that it's progressed in the trailer.

I dont get the trailer, I personally know it's a home/handheld console but the trailer doesn't really highlight that it makes it look like a large tablet console you can dock

A console being able to work with a TV at home is nothing special, so it's understandable why they chose not to emphasize that aspect much. It's kind of a given that a new game console is going to work with you sitting on your couch at home.

It's 10 years after his last appearance. He's apparently suffering from Alzheimer's.

The movie itself looks good and I like Old Man Logan as much as the next guy, but I wish they weren't ending Jackman's tenure as the character with some grimdark post-mutant-genocide nightmare.

Started a third playthrough of DkS3 but it got kind of boring because of how easy it was.

Not sure how interested I am in Frozen 2, though.

Looks really cool. I'm happy to see them continuing to focus on local multiplayer and co-op. Using a single joycon seems kind of dumb, but it's interesting that it's at least a viable option for splitscreen that doesn't require buying an extra $60 controller. I'm curious if the grip comes included with the console, though since I'd use this entirely for home use I'd probably end up buying the pro controller, too.

Other thoughts:
-Didn't see a stylus (which is great)
-Games are cartridges which seem to be about the size of a GameBoy cartridge

Her response to that question should've been straight up "Yes".

You don't propose a no-fly zone unless you're willing to enforce the fuck out of it. Now she's talking some bollocks about striking a deal with the Russians and Syrians after years of ambivalent and spineless foreign policy from America.

"Putin's gonna be diggin' some pilot-shaped graves, Chris."

Obama saved the economy by building more debt than other other president ever
He saved it from continuing to fall down thanks to Bush, Wallstreet, and leftovers from Reagan. Debt wise, I highly doubt any president will be able to fix it anymore.

Obama did very little. Bush signed the bailout package well before Obama took office and set most of the recovery in motion. It's not really a partisan thing though, any president would have done it.

We wouldn't need to have free tuition if the government didn't inject money into the colleges and thus make tuition rate so absurdly high that our entire generation is fucked because of it.

You recognize this but still don't see how catastrophic college subsidization has been, or how it will increase exponentially if colleges are essentially cut a blank check for tuition costs?
I think she's referring to community colleges, not universities. At least that was what Obama was offering. Sanders... I don't even know.

Nah, she wants free tuition for all public colleges, paid for by the wealthy.

Holy fuck why do democrats insist on being so fucking wrong about taxes and free tuition?
Trickle down economics, aka, Reaganomics, has proven of the course of the decades to be one of the leading factors that has broken the Middle Class.

"Trickle down" isn't a thing, it's just a leftist boogeyman

It has absolutely nothing to do with free tuition and crushing the middle class with taxes.

Clinton is definitely going with a more logical approach to the issue, and Trump is pushing a more emotional route.

From my pro-life perspective, her argument about it being a painful decision for the mother is far more based in emotion than the argument that human life should legally begin at a specific point during pregnancy and despite the difficulty of the decision to abort a fetus, it's still an immoral and reprehensible act in the overwhelming majority of situation.
