Serious / Re: so that emdrive thingy works
« on: November 08, 2016, 02:00:49 PM »
So first of all, this isn't like politics -- if the EM Drive really did work, the entirety of the scientific community would be happy. Nobody is discounting this because of personal preference. It is being discounted, however, because it really just doesn't appear to stand up to physical law. This paper hasn't been published, meaning it hasn't been peer reviewed or replicated. The basic conclusion is that the EmDrive is producing a small (but significant) thrust without the use of fuel. What the paper ultimately shows is that the measuring device is recording some thrust, and despite some of that force being caused by thermal expansion, they propose that a portion of the total thrust is being generated by the device as designed. I'm very skeptical of an experiment with admitted, significant error (the magnitude of which is greater than or equal to the "true" thrust from the system). Does thermal expansion and offgassing actually result in the thrust they've quantified here? How do we know if the effects of thermal expansion aren't resulting in some other force being erroneously measured?

It's a good paper, and I look forward to seeing reviews of the paper as well as improved conditions to minimize the errors for the next experiment. But I still don't believe it is capable of working the way it's been touted.

What even the point in speculating right now? Just lube up, bite the pillow, and wait for the results to come in.

I really liked her lizard getup.

Also Luther is fucking top tier

It gets a little silly but it's better than most American crime dramas.

Luther is so fucking good

But yeah, Britain excels in gritty shit for some reason

Check out Broadchurch for basically more of the same.

Been watching some British television lately -- Luther, Broadchurch, Sherlock, Office, etc. Everything's so dark and depressing. Now I need you to answer honestly, Britain: is something wrong? Are you thinking about hurting yourself?

Everyone cares about you so much, Britain -- especially your pal America. We just want to make sure you're okay.

The bright side is that she's going to be in an educational institute for the next few years and may be better for it.

Trump's Twitter is kill, apparently.

His own staff took it away.

A year and a half too late.

About 60% of the way through. It's pretty good for an indie game, but definitely not Indie Jesus that Dunkey and a lot of early-players described it as.

I imagine amygdala might be a problem

Spoiler

Gosh, seeing those dudes everywhere after beating Rom really unsettled me. It made me realize what a dire situation the world was in, and if what I was doing would even amount to anything.

I really dig the theory that the blood moon, in addition to the amygdala(s), was present from the start but hidden by insight. Really puts into perspective how fucked the world is.
is it really a theory if
Spoiler
you can see them at 40 insight without killing Rom?

No, the theory is about the moon. The game overtly presents the Great Ones and their beasts as a chronological event, but also implies that their presence (and the hunt) are cyclical, or constantly occurring.

Me personally? Or the march in general?

Both, unless they're the same.

the civil war was about states' rights

Yes, but that doesn't address the question.

Serious / Were Confederates traitors, or patriots?
« on: November 06, 2016, 05:38:26 PM »
A complex question with good arguments on both sides. Keep in mind that less than 10% of northerners were truly in favor of freeing slaves -- the attempt to ban slavery from the North was largely an attempt to keep blacks out -- and that the Civil War was not fought over the issue. These days, extremists on the right foam at the mouth at the thought of a violent revolution, and it's not unfair to say their parallels on the left don't feel the same over different ethics.

Spoiler
Entire essays can be (and have been) published about this, but I argue that they were free citizens asserting a Constitutional right and defended several important governmental premises -- namely, the enumeration of power among the states and the decentralization of federal influence.

Yawn. You asked where he was named in Wikileaks. I provided you that information.

Can't wait until your crooked candidate gets wrecked. 2 days until we drain the swamp.
I really can't tell if you're trolling, or if you really are just retarded.

Do you all just ignore Hillary's transgressions?
No, and honestly I think I've beaten that dead horse more than anyone else on here.

Do you not think our government is corrupt and needs a shake up?
I don't believe installing an unethical dumbass with no respect or understanding of how the government runs into the most powerful position of leadership in the entire world is an appropriate response to my gripes with politicians.

Do you not think Trump could negotiate our trade deals more efficiently?
No, because the president largely doesn't negotiate those deals. Dozens of advisers and an ambassadorial staff, as well as the counsel of our strategic and economic allies, accomplish that -- and I don't believe Trump even realizes that. He's a broken record that thinks playing hardball is the only negotiating tactic on the table. I wouldn't engage him in business; hell, I wouldn't even want the guy over for a beer.

I've heard they're planing on making him the villain of phase 4 (Avengers 5)

I figured he'd be back after Strange loses the infinity stone in the next Avengers film (presumably).

Just saw it. 7/10 (above average for a Marvel movie). Definitely one of the most creative Marvel movies, and I really appreciate that it's not "decent guy learns how to punch bad guys" film, though it's very formulaic (which also isn't really bad, since the Marvel formula is tried and true).

Good:
-Excellent visuals
-Best supporting cast out of any Marvel movie
-It's interesting new material without feeling exposition-heavy
-Decent use of Mads Mikkelson
-There are only two or three henchmen, and no faceless bad guys to be slaughtered

Bad:
-Generic Marvel soundtrack
-Big villain (can't even remember its name) is completely wasted, and is basically Galactus 2.0
-Very fast-paced, skipping over a lot of the fun development that could have been seen in a movie about magic warrior-monks
-Rachel McAdams is completely wasted, like Natalie Portman in Thor

Serious / Are transwomen a type of man?
« on: November 04, 2016, 11:04:28 PM »
Saw this premise in a crappy online article, and I'll excise the garbage and pose the question, which I haven't given much thought yet. Specifically it was regarding the casting of cis men in roles of transwomen in film.

I'd ask that you post a response more thoughtful than "yes" or "no", and try to give an insightful answer to a shallow question.

Shows like GoT and Westworld become popular because of their t&a, but people scoff at a dildo with a face and a voice. When will society just accept that we're a bunch of loosely organized, sex-crazed warmonkeys?
