NPR tends to be decent. They're left-leaning, but throughout the election they seemed to give very fair coverage of both sides.
I've also been reading a lot of City Journal lately, and though they're right-leaning, the articles are all very thorough and cite sources for claims. In general you ought to just avoid news that may qualify as "trending". Something designed to garner clicks or go viral is likely little more than grossly misrepresented information or outright lies/clickbait. This may be good for following day to day snippets of news, but building a reliably view of the world is impossible with such sources. 1298

I bought Witcher 2 on Steam a long time ago, played it for a day, and gave it up. I can't remember specifics, but it felt clunky overall. The alchemy/potion thing involved a lot of menu surfing, which I hated. Combat and story didn't seem very fun.
Witcher 3 is widely recognized as fantastic, and with the GotY out I figured I might give it a shot. Was I completely wrong about Witcher 2? Should I give 3 a shot? 1304

It's really awe-inspiring to look up and think about the history of the place and what it means for the story. It gives me the same feeling as Ash Lake. That's the general impression I've been getting lately, yeah. The top 2 things I hear are Blighttown and the second half. I won't let that hamper my expectations, but it seems to be a pretty common (if recent) sentiment. Some of it seems rushed and incomplete, but I really hope you stop and admire the scenery when you're down there. I've always found the constant theme of decay in the game to be deeply unsettling. Ash Lake for example is the lowest known geography in all of the Souls games. The entirety of the explored world, particularly Lordran, is built on the (presumably) petrified canopy of the archtrees. Just slightly above it in the first layer are locations like Lost Izalith, the Demon Ruins, and Tomb of the Giants. 1306

A lot of the opinions about level design in OP's video are in opposition to hbomberguy's, so here's another video to consider:
YouTube But wow, that Sulyvahn fight. A lot of the bosses felt like they didn't sufficiently telegraph attacks, but I figured it was just more needing to git gud than an error with their chained attacks causing those animations to skip. Eventually I decided the best way to avoid combo attacks is to immediately dodge away from any attack that occurs after another movement. One explanation is that they decided that players didn't need to just learn the timing of attacks, but also the safe 'zones' that could be dodged into. In DkS1, you can dodge directly into an enemy and be safe. In DkS3, it definitely felt like you need to dodge more intelligently. In his Sulyvahn example (the first one, with the weird poke stab), he dodged an attack and rolled directly in front of Suly's other sword. Realistically, why wouldn't the boss just take advantage of that and stab the player? Another example is at 35:30 against Champion Gundyr; he dodges an attack, but is then hit by another attack that makes contact before his dodge is even complete. However, that attack is a really specific move; it is a followup, and is only done on his left side, and the animation flows naturally from the previous attack. Well instead of the player complaining about "frame munching" or whatever he called it, maybe this was an attempt from the devs to make the dodge less of such an easy, gimmicky trick that makes you immune to almost any attack. If he had dodged behind Gundyr instead, he probably would have been safe. 1309
The Flood / Re: Walking Dead hitting S3 low ratings« on: December 08, 2016, 10:06:52 AM »
The parallel episode format isn't great, but the new characters are. I was hoping they would use the lack of weapons, food, and safety as a springboard to relive S1/S2 excitement, but they've solely focused on Negan (and JDM is fantastic, but is basically carrying the entire show).

The Flood / Re: I watched Dr Strange and it wasn't very good« on: December 08, 2016, 09:56:32 AM »
I feel like I remember the characters because of the actors, not because of the characters. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton are all great, but their characters fit typical moulds, and Rachel McAdams might as well have been cut entirely.
I did like how it set itself apart from other Marvel movies' action. The eastern themes are reminiscent of one of my new favorite authors, David Mitchell. 1311

Serious / Two trains; who arrives first?« on: December 07, 2016, 10:00:37 PM »
Here's a simple math problem/complex thought experiment:
If you've learned and retained basic calculus, this will come easily. If not, try to think through it (incorrect answers are better than none). There are two stations, and two trains. They will be traveling the same distance. Train A is travelling through station 1 at the same time B is leaving. It does not accelerate, but cruises through at a constant speed to station 2. ( v = c, a=0) Train B leaves station 1, accelerates uniformly (no jerk or friction to account for), and as it arrives at station 2 its velocity is exactly twice that of Train A. (v_i = 0, a = ?, v_f =2c) Who arrives at the station first? 1314
Serious / Re: Why abortion should be legal« on: December 07, 2016, 09:52:24 PM »It's also important to point out that mathematics really hasn't relied on a single source of discovery, and it's arguable that new discoveries and systems are inevitably discovered (for instance, we'd still have defined laws of motion if Isaac Newton had never been born). You can look at basically any mathematical invention and the controversy of its origin and see this. 1315
Gaming / Re: The Last of Us 2« on: December 07, 2016, 09:17:14 PM »The Uncharted series was amazing because of the gameplay paired with a deep story>he thinks uncharted is deep tbh though most video game plots are basically babby's first adventure story. It's a difficult story-telling medium because most devs feel the need to empower and satisfy the player constantly. TLOU is pretty good, but it also tries to get people to feel emotionally attached to a little girl who is literally invincible, and a PC who mows through a hundred guys/zombies in the course of an 8 hour game. It's kind of the same for Uncharted. Its story sucks but its characters are pretty fun and well-written, and the set pieces and action are, themselves, the story. 1316

Make threats about leaving if you want lower taxes and fewer regulations and still be able to ship half the jobs overseas anyway? This is the reality of the economy in the country, though. They don't have to threaten anything; companies do this naturally. And I'm not sure why I need to restate this, but Carrier didn't actually gain from staying -- how could they, if this was a pittance to appear favorable to the government? Quote Fifthly, Trump acted unilaterally. Trump had the opportunity to craft a long-term solution with Congress, but he blew them off. Where is the evidence that Trump actually had any part in this? And why on Earth would Congress have any business strong-arming a company into staying in the country at a significant loss? Trump isn't even president yet, how is he supposed to be crafting a solution to anything right now? |
