Hey no problem

Cloud Atlas did the same thing with multiple actors, and it was a flop, but I enjoy when directors try new things.

the film was made for fanboys by fanboys and we all know that

Yeah, that's my primary issue with it. Its original content is boring, and it uses in-universe references as a storytelling crutch.

The main villain is pussified (is that a word?) by Vader and Tarkin, the main cast is almost an afterthought at the end in favor of a literal handoff to ANH, and Jyn herself is a static, boring character compared to the prequels' Obi Wan, or Rey. I could go a bit more in depth but I'm cooking dinner. All in all it's a very average movie, which is a shame.

Yeah that line was bad, though.
what about the line, without referencing his delivery, was bad

Sure, that's fair. Puns are egregious in a film attempting to mirror gripping war dramas. It deflates him as a villain, and presents him as cartoonish. The first time it was done in ANH, it was surprising and new. The second time it was done in ESB it was done in the background. In Rogue One, the scene existed not to move the plot or develop a character, but to intro Vader in an already limping film. The scene could be excised entirely, and the story and characters would be no different; that's a cardinal sin in filmmaking and storytelling. The quip at the end is just distracting. The fact that it's even being discussed means it bothered people.

It's a minor thing, and the movie had many other significant problems anyway. Speaking only of the script, I'd say Jyn's multiple cheesy speeches, Saw's existence, and Chirrut's Force mantra are all bigger problems than a bad line in an unnecessary scene.

Yeah that line was bad, though. Doesn't matter if he's thrown out other one-liners in the series.

Tbh I probably would have preferred Vader being absent from the movie entirely.

Serious / Should the lottery be abolished?
« on: December 25, 2016, 09:22:01 AM »
Lotteries today are ostensibly taxes on the poor without any form of recourse in legislative bodies. In 2014, legal lotteries brought in $70 billion across the states in which it's legal, yet you've never heard of a politician fighting for that money staying in citizens' pockets. It's also important to note that this amount is higher than the cost of basically every other form of entertainment in the country.

The real kicker is that the poorest third of households (the same folks Romney called out for not paying taxes) account for half of all lottery sales: $35B as of 2014. Lottery tickets are also heavily advertised in poor neighborhoods. In 11 of the 43 legal states, the lottery brought in more than corporate taxes, and the payout itself is taxed at 45%.

So ought the lottery be abolished? It's an overtly predatory institution that targets the vulnerable poor, and is state-run to boot.

Just saw Star Wars: The Fall of Reach.

Characters and plot sucked. Nothing else really needs to be said. I'd say it's largely on par with TFA, maybe worse.

At this point, it's kind of silly that the series wastes so much time in the modern setting.

Cut out the Ewoks being the linchpin in the rebellion's largest military strike ever conducted, and it's better than Empire.

Serious / Several electors plan to vote for John Kasich over Trump
« on: December 19, 2016, 09:36:44 AM »
I'm listening to NPR right now and several electors (Electoral College) are being interviewed about their plan to vote for Kasich in the hope that they meet the minimum number of votes (36, I think?) for the vote to go to Congress.

Obviously it's a fringe movement, but it'd be interesting to see that happen. Any thoughts on the upcoming vote this afternoon?

Jesus that show sucked, but I really like Wentworth Miller and his cheesy acting, so it was okay. I had to skip a lot of the last season because it was just terrible.

I thought it was pretty ballsy to kill Michael off-screen, and it was a good ending, but I guess there's a fifth season coming out to retcon his death. Anyone else a fan of the show?

What

What happened to Kirk

This is a new TV series, separate from the new movies.

Interesting perspective from (surprisingly) a YouTube comment for a review of the indie game Inside:

Quote
The perfect 10s come from a deep insecurity a lot of games journalists have about the medium. Instead of embracing games as a unique medium that offers its own kind of experiences, they feel bad that they are reporting on such an unestablished medium, and want to justify it by promoting games that they think are "grown up".
This is why there's so much love in games journalism for walking simulators, even though they aren't well liked by their audiences- they oftentimes try to feel grown up by emulating what successful works in other mediums do, which ironically makes them actually very juvenile.
Look at the full slogs of "Dear Esther" or "Gone Home", both of which are barely games, desperately clinging to narrative gimmicks to try to impress those who see games as childish. It's a deep disrespect of video games as a medium, which while I doubt most gamers have thought about it like that, they almost certainly feel it when playing these "games". There's a reason most people find these kinds of try-hard art "games" distasteful, and it's because those kinds of games seem almost embarrassed to have gameplay, preferring to replace meaningful player interaction with "adult" elements from more established mediums.

OT: I did get the game and I just killed the griffon. Combat still feels clunky, movement has a weird delay, and there's still a fair amount of menu surfing, but it's good so far. I know I'm still in the tutorial section, though.

Guinness IPA is heresy. But I agree, the initial smoothness is unexpected in an IPA. It's like they tried to replicate their stout feel.

I don't get where this lady is saying that the whole scenario is just a power fantasy of male writers though. Everything I've been told about identifying and combating human trafficking and sexual slavery by the DoD definitely seems to show that most women will reluctantly go though with the deal.

Life is a male power fantasy

I cannot for some reason remember a military journal I was reading a year ago and a intelligence journal that I was reading which had some really nice articles on changes in geopolitics.

Good source for military news. Very technical and lengthy, though.

I'm really scared of wasps, so by relation I get startled by bees, moths, and flies that suddenly appear.

Moths, bees, and butterflies are like the puppies of the insect world though.
