Serious / Re: Ricky Gervais and Stephen Colbert debate religion« on: February 03, 2017, 04:48:38 PM »
I think the argument about 3000 vs 2999 gods is a bit disingenuous; it's a common belief among theologians (of any creed) that varying religions are simply manifestations of the same god in different cultures (often with one interpretation being "correct"). There's a massive chasm between believing any sort of deity exists, and not; much less so for believing one characterization of a deity exists, rather than a selection of others.
His analogy of the inevitability of religious texts versus scientific principles is interesting, but ultimately relies on the assumption that there is no god -- an ineffective way to make a point, and I'd question its validity: so many distinct cultures that had no contact with each other have strikingly similar origin stories. The same flood narrative exists in many cultures, such as India's Gita, Mesopotamia's Gilgamesh, or Genesis. Personally, I believe that Biblical inspiration and theophany around the world and throughout history were stepping stones to the normalization and establishment of a persistent moral code. Would the same texts have been written if history could be erased of their subjects and authors? Maybe not, but I doubt humanity would have developed significantly different systems of government, society, and ethics, just as I doubt our scientific principles would be differently expressed. 1055

Lightsabers don't just effortlessly cut through stuff (Qui Gon cutting open blast doors, Luke fighting Vader and his lightsaber deflecting off a wall, etc). Neat idea, though. 1056

Abrams isn't directing, so it should have an original story this time around. No offense, but I hope it's nothing like your prediction.

The Flood / Re: How much longer is the DCCU going to last« on: February 03, 2017, 11:08:52 AM »but to suggest they're anything other than a big commercial success because professional critics didn't like them doesn't make much sense. Is anyone really saying they were commercial failures though? Forbes did publish a decent article detailing how the earnings don't necessarily indicate a commercial success, but that's about it. It seems clear that everyone is focused on the (decidedly, if not objectively) poor quality of the films and relative failure compared to Marvel. 1058

It has universally terrible reviews and had terrible box office longevity. It made relatively little money after opening weekend in both domestic and foreign theaters. Audiences saw it because it's a recognizable, big-budget movie, but don't conflate that with a successful performance. 1061

The DC tv shows aren't particularly great, but I think it's bizarre that they're not going to use any of the thoroughly established characters they already have.
They're 0/3 so far, and I doubt WW or JL will make much of a difference. 1062
Serious / Re: #MiloAtCali canceled - Violent Rioting« on: February 02, 2017, 01:31:43 PM »I should also add if these people legit got violent and broke stuff, it sort of invalidates their entire stance on being against him, because they look like the monsters, and he doesn't. tbh I don't really agree with this. They got done what they wanted accomplished, and as long as they didn't hurt anyone and stand accountable for their crimes, I'd say they were pretty effective. 1063

But no, I don't see why it would be considered suicide. Is a terminal cancer patient refusing treatment suicidal? 1065

Spoilers for Split and Unbreakable
![]() So Split ended with Bruce Willis' character from Unbreakable mentioning Mr. Glass. Shyamalan has also confirmed that his next film will be a sequel to Unbreakable. So, David Duff vs. Mr. Glass and The Horde in Unbreakable 2? Other possible connections: -Mr. Glass caused the train crash that gives David his abilities; Kevin's father presumably dies in a train accident -Kevin leaves flowers at the subway station before turning into the beast, possibly in memory of his dad -At the end of Unbreakable, when David goes to the subway to find a villain to stop, he sees an abusive mother with her child -Kevin's mom becomes abusive after his dad dies/leaves -David explicitly states that 15 years have elapsed between the events, so the timelines work 1068

Serious / NSFW ISIS propaganda video: child soldiers executing prisoners (NSFW)« on: January 31, 2017, 03:02:16 PM »
Link in the spoiler; it is not an ISIS-affiliated site or shady content host. It contains explicit video of prisoners being murdered.
The video depicts ISIS-trained children clearing a building with bound prisoners used as human targets. Obviously it is almost entirely staged, and it looks like most of the deaths or shots taken are fake, but the warning still stands. In case the cacophony of politics for the past four months has drowned out how serious a threat ISIS remains. And as tragic as these kids' lives are, I didn't mind seeing how shitty their tactics are and how often they flagged each other. 1071

Gaming / Re: Nintendo's atttitude is rather irritating TBH« on: January 28, 2017, 08:16:21 PM »
Typing up some comments as I watch:
-Nintendo doesn't do anything for gaming these days; they don't innovate in any meaningful way, and have coasted on a few favorite franchises for over a decade -3D, motion controls, asymmetrical controls (pad + TV), augmented reality, and touchscreen controls haven't been normalized or made mainstream; they're reviled by many gamers as cheap gimmicks -Nintendo makes a safe space in online gaming? Yeah, by making it damn near impossible to figure out how to connect, especially for kids. And the PS4 and Xbox both have parental controls. Overall, Nintendo is a greedy, tone-deaf company that only manages to avoid getting the shit EA does by delivering a few polished entries in their top franchises for each console. 1078
