Franchise had a lot of potential. Most of it was wasted unfortunately.

Killer theme song as well.

I'm enjoying the HWC buildup. The U.S. teams are insane right now. There's a good 15 or so NA teams that are competent and only 8 can go to finals. H2A really only had 2 or 3 teams that had to fight for top 8 but with hwc that number has doubled. Lots of new players and new teams are making this shit hype fam.

Wait... people actually watch that?
Hell yeah. It's one of the few pieces of spectator entertainment I can enjoy being able to understand the nuances of the gameplay.

Gaming / Re: The Flood from Halo
« on: January 09, 2016, 07:57:51 PM »
The Flood is returning. They're the over-arching antagonist of the series. Everything is building up to them returning for the final test of humanity, and humanity's reclamation of the Mantle of Responsibility should they succeed.
They're still actually present within the universe, albeit in containment facilities. They're present outside of the universe also, in a much larger scale than what we've witnessed in Halo CE - Halo 3.

The San'Shyuum likely won't return because there's less than a thousand of them left alive. However, there was a San'Shyuum Warrior in the latest novel by Joseph Staten titled 'Shadow of Intent'.

There's also 6 Halo Installations left, although one of them had its surface glassed, and another had its control room ejected.

tl;dr yes the flood will be back

I doubt 343i is going to have the flood return.
They penned the lore dictating they would.

"We are the Flood. There is no difference. Until all space and time are rolled up and life is crushed in the folds ... no end to war, grief, or pain. In a *hundred and one thousand centuries ... unity again, and wisdom. Until then -sweetness."

*A typo in the book, the correct phrase was meant to be 'one hundred and one millennia.'

I almost forgot about this quote, this should be interesting for Halo 6.
Halo 6 won't deal with the Flood. It's a part of the Reclaimer saga. Only when humanity takes up the Mantle will the Flood return.

Which makes me wonder two things:

1. Was the Domain meant to be a beacon to the Precursors when the Mantle has been reclaimed (although, Halo 5 states the Organon's been destroyed...)?

2. Will the Created claiming the Mantle alter the Precursor's plans? As I type this, I realize it likely won't as the Primordial stated humans were chosen to be tested next.

Spoiler
Though, its prophecy of 101,000 years is concerning; how would it know humanity will claim the Mantle then? At the same time, methinks the Flood will be end-game stuff. As in when the Franchise is going to end. 101,000 years would put the Flood's return at around ~3555 CE. Then of course, maybe the date really was meant to be 10,100,000 years from now. I've been looking for the reply from Greg Bear where he admits that that segment was in error...

Gaming / Re: So the latest Canon Fodder on Waypoint...
« on: January 09, 2016, 02:08:54 PM »
I'd say it more comes down to probability than anything regarding the logic plague and Precursor architecture.

Precursor architecture was reawakened and serving the Flood for only the final ~10 years of the war. Same goes for the logic plague, it only reached epidemic proportions at the end of the war. So why weren't Guardians useful for containing the Flood? Well, it largely has to do with the first planet the Flood infected when they re-entered the galaxy after they left ~9,000 years prior. The world they infected was indeed Forerunner, however, it was not a part of the Ecumene nor was it officially documented. This means that Warrior-Servant response was slow and this allowed the Flood to enter slipspace and move on to infect further worlds.

However, the best worlds to infect were Forerunner ones as well as the most numerous. Guardians were never stationed on Forerunner worlds as that was not their purpose. To play devil's advocate though, let's say that these civilizations that required policing from a Guardian were counted as being a part of the Ecumene. If we ignore physical distribution of these planets and just focus on the numbers we know there are 3,000,000 worlds a part of the Ecumene. Based on 031 Exuberant Witness' reference to a Guardian, we know they numbered up to 9,999, however the actual number was likely less. We'll just assume they had 9,999 Guardians for the sake of the argument.

Doing the math, there is a third of a percent's chance (0.33%) of a Flood ship encountering a system being policed by a Guardian ASSUMING that the Forerunners counted these worlds a part of their Ecumene.

So, for every Guardian the Flood encounter, they will have infected 299 other worlds. Of course, if the Flood just only focused on populated Ecumene planets (which they probably did initially), they'd have just ignored the Guardians entirely.

The real question is did 343 just forget about the Drones?
And didn't 343 say something about bringing the Sharquoi back from the land of unrealized concepts?
Nah, Drones were in the latest entry of Halo lore.

All they said about the Sharquoi is that they're still canon. With the introduction of the Covenant Fringe, I can only assume they're a part of that.

Has anyone ever wondered why they have been absent from the game for some time. I mean it just feels like they up and disappeared. Like gone from the previous trilogy mainly due to the death of the gravemind . But still a proto-gravemind should exist somewhere like the one on the Mona Lisa.
Obviously, we're not seeing any Flood right now due to their defeat at the end of Halo 3. None are likely to have survived on the Ark as the Master Chief overloaded High Charity's secondary reactors, incinerating what was left of the space station. Overall, survival of any Flood on the Ark seems slim. 04b never fired properly and while it's unknown if the neutrino pulse was successful, we do know that 04b's firing scorched the surface of the Ark and caused catastrophic failure. Any slim survival of the Flood after that point would have been dealt with by 0000 Tragic Solitude's sentinels or its complement of armigers.

Quote
Or at least one of the earlier installations should be housing them. Remember there were many research facilities made by the forerunners to study the Flood. Some of them must have had a breakout and there are still five more halos to deal with. Well four, what with a new Halo already being discovered by ONI.
Assuming they had a breakout, they're not exactly in an ideal position. they have no way of getting off world, and likely won't have the necessary biomass or sentient life to create a Gravemind. Eventually, they'll exhaust their source of food and starve to death. Assuming they're not at that point, they won't exactly be in a position of dominance as the largest civilizations in the Orion Arm (and presumably the galaxy) take extreme precautions when dealing with possible Flood contamination (IE: 500 light-second exclusion zone is maintained around Threshold by joint Sangheili-UNSC patrols, the Sangheili and Jiralhanae momentarily stopped the Great Schism to quarantine Delta Halo, the Spartan Branch runs Flood simulations in War Games as well as develops tech designed to deal with the Flood, Fleet of Retribution's quarantine and attempted cleansing of High Charity).

Quote
So any though of the return of the Flood or are the gone for good?
They'll return. We already know there are Flood forms present on the Spirit of Fire, as well that they originated from outside our galaxy from a mostly unknown origin.

Quote
And bonus, any chance of the prophets returning?
Definitely. The fate of Janjur Qom has been incredibly ambiguous, and the elaboration of the Stoics and their biotech military after the War of Beginnings leaves me intrigued. In addition to that, the short novel Shadow of Intent has revealed that the San'Shyuum who escaped from High Charity designated a secret regrouping point that Rtas is now pursuing with the Shadow of Intent with the interesting intentions of making peace.

forge maps suck and so do the controls

it's basically a worthless game mode right now for 90% of the playerbase

only those who are willing to put in the time and effort to deal with this shitstain are going to be able to do anything with it, which is a shame because this forge has a lot of potential
If it makes you feel any better, we can use every object and item on every map in the game. Makes it really easy to break out of the Arena maps and Forge outside the boundries.

Daily reminder that it is nearly two months from launch and we still have yet to get any more custom games options.

GG 343
Certainly not what you're looking for, but they did update Custom Games with the Cartographer's Gift update.

Hey everyone! We've just added some brand new Machinima controls into Halo 5. To find these settings, go to Custom Games -> Select a game type -> Settings -> Machinima Control [ON]

Here are how the custom controls work (default control setting):
  • Lower Weapon: Hold X and D-pad down for two seconds
  • Detach camera in gameplay: Hold X and D-pad up for two seconds
  • Toggle camera control mode when detached (Normal and Pan): Hold X and press d-pad left
  • Toggle between Spartan and camera control when detached: Press View button
  • Display Spartan/camera position coordinates: Hold X and press d-pad right
We hope you enjoy, and look forward to your feedback! This update has also been added to the patch notes.

Great, for the small amount of the population that creates machinimas and videos that require this tool. But for most of us, it's pointless.

I don't expect options until February, which is just pretty damn sad from them.
Is there any rationale behind February or are you just being salty?

Because I have little to no faith in 343 to capitalize on potential holiday players and get more options out next month?

Again, it's amazing that we are in 2015 and are shipping with less options for playing the game than we did in 2007, 2010, and 2012.

It's pretty much industry wide, and a damn shame. But as long as we get that good frame rate.
Okay, but how does that feed into you deciding on February? Because I don't really see how that answers my question.

Well, if I don't foresee them adding it next month...February would be the next potential month to add them?
Excuse me, I missed the part of your post I've highlighted in this one.

Anyway, I'm positive it'll be coming January. It's been one of the most requested things and they've already teased the Gravity Hammer.

The controls are superior. They modeled them so you don't need to move your fingers as much, and so they resemble professional modeling and level editor controls.

So how bad is this game? It's probably fucking awful.
It's really not that bad. Warzone is a pretty interesting addition, the Req system with the card packs is pretty enticing and the campaign is pretty good from the few missions I've played so far. Arena can be fun but the lack of competitive modes where you don't start with an assault rifle and a very small amount of playlists are a pretty big buzzkill. Just don't listen to the "10/10 genuine core Halo gameplay but more modern" comments and try thinking of it as something different altogether. I'm having more fun that way.
Besides:

Pistol ≥ Battle Rifle

No, it doesn't mention custom gametypes
No, it doesn't mention the release date ("This week")
No, it doesn't mention the file size

Now you don't need to bother opening the link
I don't need your handouts!
