The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:43:59 PM »
At least 13 of the threads currently on the front page of Serious would be moved under our model.
Could you name a few? I'm honestly seeing nothing but political discussion. I guess my definition is just inherently broader.
"Russian fishermen catch squeaking alien and eat it"
What qualities constitute "good" music?
Any writing you're working on?
Every fast food restaurant should be following this model
Sony to possibly release The Interview on Crackle, for free
North Korea's internet is down entirely

What's the difference between belief and a lack of belief?
All right, all right. Those ones don't fit under what I'd consider politics/religion. Everything else you mentioned, I think could be chalked up pretty easily. And as for that last one, I mean, you made it, so I'm inclined not to count it.

I'd honestly rather Serious have a broader range of potential topics of discussion. Rename The Flood to Shitpost Central, because that's what it is, and that's what it's always going to be. The community has made that clear.

"Moving" everything but the religious/political discussions to Shitpost Central will not change anything. Serious is already very slow on activity as it is, and everything that's not a religious/political discussion tends to get moved already. I'm not sure what you guys are talking about.

Septagon / Give users the ability to lock their own threads.
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:26:03 PM »
Simple request. It seems arbitrary that a lot of OPs will end up asking mods to lock threads for them after heavy derailment, and mods aren't always online. Giving users the ability to lock their own threads would solve this problem--and I've seen this done on a number of forums I've been to.

However, make it so if a user locks his or her own thread, he or she cannot then unlock it. They'd have to request a higher-up to do it for them (namely a monitor).

Ultimately, if a user creates a thread, I think it should be up to him and the mods as to how long the discussion can go.

That, really, should be the remit of Serious: politics and religion. The fact that we don't have a clearly defined boundary between the two fora leads to the Flood being sapped of things which could promote decent discussion, because somebody thought it fight the ambiguous criteria for Serious.
Right. Because a thread like that, and threads like many others that I've thought of, wouldn't belong in Serious under the current remit, but you'd have to be snorting coke from your own asshole to think the Flood is any safe place for it to be. So the only other option is to not post the thread at all.

Which really kinda sucks, and it's not... "fair", at the risk of sounding a little jejune.

Meta, how open are you to the idea of allowing more threads in Serious? Sometimes I find your judgment questionable (like... not allowing Mad Max's thread about his significant other's passing in there).

Shit posting ain't gonna die, my nigga.
It doesn't have to die, it just has to be shot in the foot.

The Flood has ALWAYS been about shitposting.
Then vive la fucking révolution.
Cheat put a stop to it when Noelle started making it a big deal though.
Yeah, we talked about it.

Nah, it was actually me who started the warning thing.
Oh. Well, good going.

soz noelle even though you're done with this site
Maybe so, but we both know he was referring to me.
I really wasn't. You're one of, like, ten big shitposters.

Yeah, it doesn't work that way. If a member doesn't give a shit about being banned - which most of this forum's shitposters don't - they aren't going to care about "three tiers of punishments"
Then who needs them?

Pay attention to the underlined passage, and tell me how that doesn't continue arguments?
All you had to underline was the word "fat." Which I used on purpose to see if it caught your eye.

Good job. You know how to spot shit. Now what are you going to do about it in the future?

He said the exact same thing to me:
Then he can sure teach me a fucking lesson, too. If it doesn't work, increase the length. This is basic moderation.

There would be no one left to post on the site then.
That is just so not true. Did Sandtrap say that he'd permaban? No. Just ban. Three days, maximum. If he wants to continue posting on the forum, he wouldn't continue aggravating arguments like he tries to do every time he opens his fat mouth.

All wound up. On the edge. Terrified.
Sleep disturbed. Restless mind. Petrified.

Bouts of fear permeate all I see.
Heightening nervousness threatens me.

I am paralyzed, so afraid to die.

Caught off guard--warning signs never show.
Tension strikes, choking me. Worries grow.

Why do I feel so numb?
Is it something to do with where I come from?
Should this be fight or flight?
I don't know why I'm constantly so uptight.

Rapid heartbeat pounding through my chest.
Agitated body in distress.

I feel like I'm in danger.
Daily life is strangled by my stress.

A stifling surge shooting through all my veins.
Extreme apprehension--suddenly, I'm insane.

Lost all hope for redemption.
A grave situation, desperate at best.

Why do I feel so numb?
Is it something to do with where I come from?
Should this be fight or flight?
I don't know why I'm constantly reeling.

Helpless hysteria.
A false sense of urgency.
Trapped in my phobia.
Possessed by anxiety.

Run.
Try to hide.
Overwhelmed by this complex delirium.

Helpless hysteria.
A false sense of urgency.
Trapped in my phobia.
Possessed by anxiety.

Run.
Try to hide.
Overwhelmed by this complex delirium.

Putting this thread in Septagon kinda killed it.

your incessant aggression and belligerence overshadow any positive contributions you've made
No, I don't think they do. When I fight with someone, that's not me running down the community, is it? Is it really? What's more destructive? Me fighting with someone I hate, and maybe having three or four users gang up on me in the process, even in threads where I'm not even ASKING FOR TROUBLE...

or... someone who posts fifty threads a day that are about nothing--threads that add nothing to the discussion and only inflate the forum's popularity.

That's up in the air, but I think the answer is quite obviously the latter... To put a better perspective, challengerX started saying shit to me, like, "YEAH! HARASS HIM! SEE HOW HE LIKES IT!" I... don't care. If the entire forum was hellbent on harassing me, I wouldn't care. It wouldn't change my will to ameliorate the forum in whatever ways that I can.

No, because this community doesn't leave much room for imagination.

>doesn't sensor language
>generally tells people not to fight before issuing warning
>really only bans people for being twats

Yeah, mods are dicks.
We give you guys a chance to correct your behavior. When that doesn't happen, we step in.
I'm surprised people aren't happy with this way of doing things >_>
Yes, having no censor is nice, but it's not really much of a selling point. There should just be no censorship in general. It's kinda like saying, "Join our forum! We let you post!" It's not a seller, it's a... no brainer. I'm glad you have it, but... it also just has very little to do with moderation (that's more a policy).

Telling people not to fight is... again, just one of those things that mods... you know... SHOULD do.

Banning people only for being twats... Um... Okay. Not sure how to feel about that one, considering that a lot of people find ME insufferable and annoying, but I haven't even received so much as a warning since I came back.

But yeah, in general, I don't have a problem with any of the mods--they are too lenient, however, and that's what this is about.

Loosely speaking, maybe, but then so has everyone. Get off your high horse.
In my opinion, any shitpost you make deducts from any positive contributions you might have made in the past. But whatever.

I personally find sites like these more entertaining when there are less rules, but then people always demand that mods get fired for not banning half the community when it gangs up on someone who's being a retard.
You are the opposite of what this forum needs.

You can argue that I'm on the same boat, but hey, look, I'm actually trying to contribute here.
I've made contributions to this forum.

I like what I'm hearing from Sandtrap, as always, except for the bit about punishment for "harassing PMs." If you're receiving harassing PMs, block whoever's harassing you. In my opinion, PMs should ALWAYS be between the recipient and the sender and no one else. Mods should have no jurisdiction under a private setting. Unless in extreme circumstances where... I don't know, they're sending you child porn or something.

This issue was more or less resolved with the removal of custom options upon a formal warning. Having those go away for a while isn't exactly an accessory like that "watched" state was, but at the same time it didn't impact a user's posting ability unless they were lite-banned.
Right, I forgot about that. That's good. Sort of. I mean, I'm having trouble putting myself in the position--like, not everyone has a titlebar, and not everyone really cares enough about their titlebar. Let alone the words on it.

But it's something...

The Flood / Re: Are the mods here too strict?

We can only communicate as much as possible. An example was allowing everyone to see the "Warned" title  to show that we actually gave out warnings frequently. Of course, then people used it as an accessory and just shitposted to get it.

It became less of a punishment.
To me, that was a big mistake to remove that. Because if you're willing to shitpost just to get it, that just goes to show how much contributional value THAT user has, if that's how they're gonna treat their forum. That's why if they continue, BAN the fucker. Permanently. They're obviously not fit for intelligent discussion/posting.

I mean, I hate to blame Noelle, but that whole trend sort of was her fault, but she was just being vindictive. And just like the sheep that a lot of this community consists of, they followed it.

I don't fucking know. I just don't think it has to be this difficult.

Moderating is subjective soo....
It probably shouldn't be. You should all have this objective standard for rule-breaking that you all agree on. Leave no room for that subjective bullshit that just gets in the way.

Fuck no.

The mods need to be fucking draconian when it comes to shitposting, but they ENCOURAGE IT INSTEAD.
