I consider myself to be a relatively virtuous person. Among other things, I am courteous, I am loyal, I am responsible, and I am accountable. I also never lie.

But what do I mean by that last bit? To me, a lie is when you steal money, and then later claim that you did not. In worse cases, you'll end up blaming someone else for your misdeed. Another lie is exaggerating your capabilities to achieve something, like a job. Lying about your qualifications on your resume. And for a third example, a lie is when you fail to take accounting for something that has happened due to your incompetence, or otherwise. Spilling milk all over the kitchen floor and blaming it on the cat--that's a lie.

What all these three things have in common is that some prior truth-laden event must have taken place first in order to make the truth statement. The truth statement being made is contingent upon the truth event. You can't claim that the cat spilled the milk before the milk was even spilled.

So, here's the question--do broken promises count as lies?

Though I've already made the claim that I never lie, I have broken a fair amount of promises in my life. All of them due to incompetence on my part. I wasn't mindful enough, I wasn't strong enough, I wasn't smart enough, I wasn't prepared enough, I didn't care enough, I didn't know enough--either which way, the promise that I had given was not fulfilled, often leaving the individual highly disappointed with me.

Does this make me a liar? If I say, "I'll do better next time," and I fail, is that a lie?

To me, it seems like the word "lie" implies that some prior event must have taken place first. A broken promise is an event taking place after the promise was made--it took place in the deterministic future, something that I can't feasibly change. I can make the strongest effort I could possibly make at some task, and still fail--we often call this an "honest effort". "Honest". Does that honesty nullify the deceptive nature of the broken promise? Or is it all ultimately still a lie?

Anyway, I think you get the gist of my query. For the sake of brevity, I'll stop here.

"Literally". I literally never use this word incorrectly, but I do use it too often, I think.

"Like". I'm, like, practically a valley girl when it comes to this word. Like, especially in chat rooms. Sometimes I think it, like, gets on people's nerves.

"At all". I don't understand why I use this term so much. At all. It makes me sound douche-y, which is useful, but sometimes I use it even when I'm not trying to sound douche-y.

"Or some shit". Sometimes extended to "or some shit like that," or some shit like that. I love taking advantage of the word "shit" with all its versatility.

So, for those of you interested, here are the rules for the mono-type tourney we'll be having...

We will be using the Showdown battle simulator found here: http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/
If you don't have an account, go ahead and make yourself one and get yourself familiarized with the team builder.

I assume most of you know how the competitive metagame works, so I'll skip over most of that shit.
Just keep in mind that Showdown uses Smogon rules, so any Pokémon considered "Uber" will be ineligible.

Rather than a standard elimination bracket, we'll be using a round robin tourney. That is, you have a match with every other person in the tournament to gain points (and whoever has the most points at the end of the tourney wins). A "match" will be considered whoever wins the first two out of three battles.

This means the winner of the match will always get two points--but the loser can still gain at least one point. This adds a further dynamic to the scoring, and it helps prevent ties. In the event of a tie, everyone who tied up will engage in another round robin style tourney, gaining points once again until there is a definitive winner.

Now for the fun stuff!

Given that this is a Mono-type tourney, you are limited only to your selected type. If your type is Water, you may use any 'mon who is solely water, primarily water, or secondarily water. To make things more fun and dynamic, however, you will not be allowed to choose your OWN type--I will use a random number generator to give you one. If you are unhappy with your type, I can reroll for you once--but if you do that, you can't go back on your decision. Failure to comply with that will result in your forfeiting of the tournament.

TEAMS WILL BE FLUID. That is to say, you can edit your teams in between matches at your leisure as long as you only use 'mons that are in your designated type, but you don't have to use the same Pokémon with the same moves. This allows you to optimize your strategy against an opponent who may have a type advantage over you--but be wary, for your opponent will likely have an optimized strategy against you, as well.

(also important: if you choose to reroll, you may get your type twice in a row, so be wary of that. ALSO, no two participants will have the same type, for maximum diversity)

The nice thing about round robin is that it allows for relatively free reign--you can fight whoever you need to, whenever you are able to. So for the sake of getting more people involved, signup for the tourney will end on January 31st. That's next Saturday at midnight, EST. You can take your time building yourself a team and battling everyone, but keep in mind that this tournament will END at the end of February. That's plenty of time for you to get all your battles done with everyone. Be wary if new people signup before the 31st of January, however!
