I don't typically ever use it, unless I'm obviously being ironic. I have an aversion to it, like any person probably should.

Anyone gonna see this thing tomorrow?...
Well, I suppose the premiere would be tonight, but premieres suck.

I'm afraid to, but I mean, action films have been killing it this year.

i mean yeah, i would obviously say that it is justified (as cindy said, it really is just "fuck niggers: the flag", in my opinion)
(or as you would put it, "fuck niggers: the flag - now with nuance!")

but i'm not terribly concerned about it either
hence why i dropped in so late on this thread

The Flood / Re: Do Americans unironically clap in movie theaters?
« on: June 30, 2015, 05:41:43 PM »
it was harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2
that's the only premiere i've been to where everyone clapped--and it was during four parts of the film

Spoiler
- when McGonagall made the statues come alive and had her little one-liner
- when molly killed bellatrix
- when neville killed nagini
- the credits

and it was probably the best experience i've ever had at the cinema, because the audience was so into it
sooooo

If this rumour is true, can you please tell me why you would do such a strange and bizzare thing? The images on the screen cannot hear your applause? They are not actors on a stage, so who are you showing your appreciation towards?

Why, why, why?
it's really not a big deal, guy

the only showing i've been to where everyone clapped was during Harry Potter

really, it's about the audience having fun watching the film all together

why don't you ask why people clap or hit stuff when they laugh
it would be about as useful and as interesting of a question

I mean, we're all adults--we've all took this course. Hopefully, everyone understands that there are reasons for these things. But how important are those reasons in this particular discussion, anyway? That's why we just use blanket speech. The details aren't incredibly important.

i mean, this thread was once about cake

Serious / Re: Walmart refuses to make a Confederate flag cake. . .

People don't just do bad things because they want to do bad things; they justify it however they can. Sometimes there are good-ish justifications (see: post-Iraq justification) and there are bad ones (see: megalomania, racism). Slavery was the behavior, socioeconomic and political issues are the justifications. If you want to prevent things from re-occurring, you have to understand the why. Saying "it was a bad thing, who cares?" is a problem.
Sure, but I don't think that's what I was doing, or at least, I wasn't trying to. There's obviously many different flavors of racism--and I'd imagine that the individual who says, "I can't be for the abolition, because muh livelihood" doesn't quite realize how very racist that is. But it's still, you know, racist. It's not that I'm saying, "they were evil, therefore who cares"--I'm just calling it what it is.

What you're doing is delineating the types of racism, but then saying... "See, it wasn't just racism". Which only works if someone honestly believes that racism is a one-way street, which, I don't think any of us do. It's like saying, "It's not red, it's scarlet." You're not wrong, but it's like... I dunno. Not pedantic. But I just don't think any of us deny that it was more than just "simple" racism.

Very few subjects can be accurately summarized in two words. Likewise with the Southern secession, "muh slaves" is a very poor way to explain the thought process behind it. Like I've said throughout this discussion, slavery was a big reason why it happened, but that doesn't mean that it is as simple as saying "they wanted to [a]". It is "they wanted to [a] because [x, y, z]."

I'm not justifying the secession, I'm trying to explain the justification for the secession.
Yeah, I got that. Explaining the thought process behind it all is important, but I really think some things are just tautological. Racism is still racism, no matter how nuanced it is.

But yeah, now we're speaking the same language.

As it relates to their abilities to make a living. I'm certain that there was a good amount of cases where it did just boil down to not wanting equality; you can see that in the persistence of institutionalized racism in the following decades. But that doesn't mean that it was the only reason why they were against abolition.
Is not wanting to lose your job as a result of abolition not the very definition of institutional racism? I guess my point is that, even if it's not about people-owning-people, it's still all racist, either institutionally or otherwise. And maybe that's NOT the argument being had, and I'm just not looking close enough.

I never said that it wasn't a good thing to happen. Yes, human rights are the priority. That is incredibly obvious. What I'm saying is that it wasn't just a bunch of old men getting their panties in a twist because they couldn't own people anymore, and I think that's what Sol was trying (and failing) to explain earlier.
i wasn't referring to you when i said "you"--i was referring to them

the old men who i'm, personally, still convinced were just getting their panties in a twist because they couldn't own people anymore--because like i said, if they were decent, it wouldn't make a difference

that's all i was saying

Not wanting the economy to drop like a rock isn't that silly.
not if you believe that basic human rights out-prioritize the economy

in which case, yeah, i think a solid case could be made to say it really does stop at slavery

because if someone had decency, and cared about the welfare of all human beings, and recognized slaves as such, would it really make a difference to them if the economy fell as a result of the abolition?... i don't think so
