Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of Pokémon and other older, long-standing franchises like that. Anything that began in the 8bit era, or maybe during that awkward transitional period between 2D and 3D. Because the industry works a little different now--if your first installment sucks, literally nobody ever gives you a pass. We're pretty unforgiving these days. I gave Pokémon R/B a 6/10 in my last review, but some would argue that I should be more generous and give it something crazy like a 9/10. Because without Red and Blue, there would be no other Pokémon games, period--and according to them, I should respect that. I can kinda see where they're coming from, but I do tend to disagree with that logic, because I believe the sole purpose of a review is to discuss the merits of the game itself--not the game's overall importance to the industry, the franchise, or whatever else. If I had to rate Pokémon R/B's importance to the industry, I would be remiss to give it anything other than a 10/10, right? I gave it the score I did because I (and many many others) simply don't think it holds up very well by today's standards, and I believe "today's standards" are the only relevant metric to go by. No one cares how good a game used to be--is it good now? That's what people care about when they're reading a review.

My whole point from the beginning was that it's possible for the engine to misjudge your interests, hence Charlie's thread. And yes, if you look up "Pikachu", that does mean you do have some sort of interest with Pokemon. Well, you know that's not true, so I don't even know why you'd say that. You really can't think of a situation where you'd look something up--like the brand name for some product you've never heard of--learn that it's not for you, and then move on and forget about it? Ads are super specific. They just aren't complicated. The provider looks at your history, compares it with other people's online purchases who share the same or similar search history, and then provides you with ads for products people with similar history have a trend of buying.
that's fantastic just one problem: not once have i seen an advertisement on this website for a product that i would personally buy so you can say that they're "super" specific, but that's a bit of a joke, because in my case, they couldn't be less specific this is what i mean by specific, cheat: specifically catered to a person's interests, which cannot happen, because we're not always searching for things with the intent to buy some product, ie. just because you looked up what a "pikachu" was, doesn't mean you have any interest in Pokémon, but you might see Pokémon ads anyway
