The Flood / Re: cultural appropriation
« on: November 24, 2016, 11:27:07 AM »
I would think most people would be delighted to see others emulate their culture.
Then you're adorably naive.

Some people may be delighted, but most would (and should) view it as an outright mockery. It's no different than Steve Buscemi walking up to a group of teenagers with a do-rag and a skateboard saying, "How do you do, fellow kids?"

When someone who is not part of your culture tries to emulate said culture, they're just embarrassing themselves. You have to be at least partially ingrained within the culture to not come off as either a clown or someone who is trying to be offensive.

bruh, singular they has been a thing since the 14th century
Only because of lazy, ungrammatical idiots. It's still considered informal and improper, and for good reason.
I use it all the time as a singular pronoun and I understand it's not "correct." I just don't care. It should be able to be used this way.
It creates lexical ambiguities that would look puerile and unprofessional under a formal setting. If you were reading an article about someone in the newspaper who insisted on being referred to as a "they," the average reader is going to assume that the story is referring to more than one person. It just creates unnecessary confusion.

why? it's polite at best, a minor inconvenience at worst. words are just sounds anyways.
grammar > your feelings, sorry not sorry

if words are just sounds, then it really shouldn't make a difference how i choose to refer to you anyway

and yeah, whether you're talking about ONE person or MULTIPLE people is actually a pretty fucking important distinction
ok verb, social justice and english-language aficionado, how should one refer to a non-binary person?
If the English language had a singular gender-neutral pronoun, I would use that. But we don't, and you can't just make one up--it doesn't work like that. So, we have to settle with either "he" or "she." That's it. So pick one and be comfortable with it, because expecting people to bend over backwards for all your little idiosyncrasies is not only entitled as fuck, but also insufferable and childish. I'm not your caretaker--I don't have to give a shit about your personal comfort, and you don't have to give a shit about mine. The bottom line is that no one should care, and anyone who does is rather feeble-minded in my opinion.

Alternatively, you could just not associate yourself with such entitled little snowflakes.

You won't find a bigger supporter of the trans community on this forum than me, but I draw the line at non-binary nonsense.

idk his pronouns
evidently, he goes by "they," "their," etc.

not that you should have to break the rules of grammar just to make someone feel comfortable

Just made it to the fourth island. This game is so dope.

Team: Decidueye, Toucannon, Butterfree, Magneton, Lycanroc, Salazzle.
Currently training a Fomantis, Charjabug, Cubone, and Wimpod--they're not ready for the team yet.
I used a Slowpoke briefly, and I just retired my Ledian.

I caught a shiny Raticate today.

it's shit because it allows evil to be committed for "the greater good"

if you have to commit evil to reach an end, then the end isn't worth reaching.
thank you for demonstrating your complete lack of understanding of utilitarianism

It was only for the first three, but thank you for your interest.

utilitarianism is when the net happiness outweighs the net suffering
The ideal being that suffering should be quashed entirely--and if this ideal is not met, it's not utilitarian. You just have a compromise--the "most" utilitarian option, but not the utilitarian option.
And in the scenario I described, the most utilitarian option is to allow that society to continue.
But it's not the utilitarian option. It doesn't describe a utilitarian society, because it doesn't represent the true cause behind utilitarianism. It's a society where people say, "Well, this is good enough." That's not utilitarian--that's Bentham's shitty outdated brand of utilitarianism that's been ousted for centuries.

God, English philosophers are such shit.
"My magical utopian brand of Utilitarianism has never been tried"
Well, my "magical utopian brand of utilitarianism" is everyone fucking dies. So yeah, of course it hasn't been tried.

It's not that extinction is in itself utilitarian--it's simply the only way to fully realize the utilitarian model, because existence in itself begets disutility in some form. There's nothing else.

if you let one person be eternally tortured to allow 5,000,000,000 people to live forever in constant bliss and ecstasy, utilitarianism would encourage that.

Shit moral system
itt: no one understands what utilitarianism is
expect that would totally be in line with utilitarian ideals
utilitarianism is the pursuit of utopia (a perfect society where no one suffers in any way) in the most cost-efficient manner possible

if one person is suffering, you don't have a utopia, and you don't have utlitarianism

How goes your musical endevours?
Hit a wall after I finished the last lp. I've got one unfinished song under my belt and that's it. Disappointed every time I think about the situation.

Wish I had something useful to say for that. Never quite learned how to get over certain walls myself. How about another question if you're up for it?
Go ahead. It's what the thread's for, after all.

It's always been a notion of mine to try and usually ask one question so as not to end up hogging conversation room. That being said, most of my questions suddenly vanish for amas.

I don't remember you putting yourself up on the spotlight here so much. What's prompted the ama tonight?
Liquid courage. I don't start typing poorly, nor do I make phonecalls to people to let them know just how much I love them. I just watch TV, then post an AMA.

Tipsy and flat out pissed do different things to people. Depends on tolerance too I guess. My hands rattle and shake currently and I can still type coherently to a degree.

You in the habit of drinking often or is it just an occassional thing?
Typically I'll have an ounce and a half mixed into a drink, but I'm feeling less of myself tonight. What better to fill the void with than Tennessee's best?

Guess you're feeling like you're on your own tonight. You've got liquid courage going for you suppossedly. Tell me then. What's eating you at the moment? What's wrong with things?
An issue that, while given spotlight via AMA, I don't feel all too comfortable divulging; I get pangs every once and a while related to it before I bury it again. It's hard to hide yourself, you know?

Guess I got what I was expecting. Can't blame you for not wanting to say something openly out here. I won't ask what the buried treasure is. But, I can ask, why hide?
The two S's: shame and stigma. I hate myself, and so does everyone else. They just don't know it yet, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Ya know, unless you did something horrible like remotely detonate an rc car into a hospital full of kids or elbow slam a grandma crossing the street, I don't see what there would be to hate. Believe me when I say that I've bumped into people that would be deserving of hate, and I couldn't do it.

I'll shoot for another one then. Why hate yourself?
What else besides nearly everything? I can't exactly be more specific without droning on about my inadequacies.
I don't think that's what he meant. Maybe this only applies to the Internet, but you've said before that you've essentially rid yourself of all hate towards other people, right? Because life is short and it takes too much energy--energy that could be spent doing more positive things.

So, he's not really asking for a list of reasons why you hate yourself--He's asking you why you spend the energy. I think.

Though you may not feel comfortable discussing it publicly, I think I may have an idea of what's troubling you lately, so if you wanna talk about it with someone you can trust, I'll be up all night.

So you're equally good at all heroes and use them all equally? Of course not. I specialize in a few in each category, and symmetra is one of my best supports.
That's not maining fam.
It is in the context of a game with 22 characters.
This has been an incredibly stupid and trivial discussion. I hope you recognize that.

but it's made by the same guy who made "fallout 3 is garbage" and he's very articulate and thorough in his analysis
I actually saw this video a couple days ago and stopped when he bases his entire argument on asserting that his favorite playable is objectively more fun than any other and that people who don't agree are somehow stupid. I know here on Sep7 we say shit in games is objectively better all the time as a joke or as hyperbole and shoot shit at each other, but holy shit this guy ACTUALLY REALLY means it.
Like Holy Hell, how can you be a more self absorbed, pretentious fuck?
I doubt he means it. He says shit like that all the time, and if you let it affect you, you're weak in the head.

The Flood / Re: choose my avatar
« on: November 22, 2016, 08:46:22 PM »
But I do style my hair, when I wake up it's legit standing straight up. Same with taking a "nice" picture, I take like ten to try to get the right angle before I'm content with the photo I post. I guess I just suck at taking them.

I do try to make my eyes look as big as possible, but yeah, I have a bad smile so I usually do either a smirk or an angry look. In general, posing for photos is always a forced thing for me. I thought you were supposed to look at the camera, though?

But thanks for the advice!
Looking into the camera isn't always a bad idea, but when you're making an avatar, you have to take into account the fact that people are constantly going to be seeing this picture when they interact with you--and what they're gonna see is you, staring intently into their soul. It kinda creeps people out. So unless that's what you're going for, I'd avoid that.

Part of the reason I had my eyes obscured in that one picture is because I didn't want to create that effect. I didn't want to create the impression that I was looking at anything or anybody in particular, so I blocked that element out of the photo entirely. Looking away from the camera tends to draw attention away from your eyes, which is (generally) what you want.

Self-photography IS hard because, like you said, it's difficult not to "force" an expression. The best thing to do, I suppose, would have other people take pictures of you during your most natural/human moments. You can have a professional take photos of you, but that's expensive and impractical. Or you could meticulously study models' expressions on professionally-taken photos and try to emulate them (not recommended).
