May's chief of staff supposedly sat on reports that such high-rise buildings were vulnerable to fire.

Just saw that a treasury minister for the Conservatives lost her reelection.

May really fucked up here
The housing minister lost his seat, and Home Secretary Amber Rudd kept her's by just a few hundred votes.

65
Hung parliament confirmed.

May fucked it.

is corbyn the guy who means well and has half-rational ideals but is wholly unlikable
He is very unfavourably rated by the general public.

YouGov's final calling is an increased Tory majority, so I'll be voting Liberal.

Do you feel something different about this girl? Or do you just want to fuck her?
I don't know her well enough at all to have any kind of feeling; I just think she's attractive and am interested in her.

Sex isn't really an issue, I have a fuck-buddy anyway.

When asking a girl out, always do it face to face.
I would, but I really don't know her that well at all. I have her on Facebook, but don't have her number/don't know when she'll next be at the bar on campus.
Hm... That's a toughie. Maybe asking over Facebook might be the best way to go. A way to get to know each other better/hang out.
But should I strike up a conversation and slip it in or just straight-up ask?

So basically there's this attractive girl who I met like a week ago, but can't remember, and then last night she came up to a mutual friend and said hello, then she hugged me and said hello to me. She spoke to me a little outside the bar, and I'm pretty sure at one point she was talking to her mate about me. Which could either be positive or negative.

I want to message her like 'wanna go for drinks' or something, but considering I don't really know her I don't know if that would be weird.

centrism is the state of having no side
That's dumb.

That's like saying the American stood between the Nazi and the Soviet hasn't picked a side.

Serious / Re: Is there Political Compass quiz that isn't shit?
« on: June 04, 2017, 01:53:40 PM »
Well, no, it's just your job to interpret the questions properly. If you get hung up on how a question is worded rather than reading between the lines and understanding what is being asked, then of course you're not going to be satisfied with your result.
Point being that the questions can be so vague or biased that it's impossible to capture the necessary detail with "agree" or "disagree".

but i would argue that compasses aren't designed to determine your actual political positioning, it's more of a general guideline
Well, sure, but why the fuck do you need a quiz and a compass to tell you the general outlook of your politics? You need to know that anyway before you take the test.

They're useful in the sense of showing evolution of views, since you can compare relative results. But even then--and as a descriptor of views--they aren't great.

you people take them too seriously when they're obviously not meant to be
I don't take them seriously at all. Have you read PolCom's FAQs? The creators are the ones who take it too seriously.

Compasses are a bad way of determining actual political positioning, anyway. They can't sufficiently account for nuance or syncretism.

Given that this is the Independent, that they haven't linked the ComRes study and that we recently voted Brexit I am skeptical.

Guardian live-feed:

Quote
“The work undertaken throughout the day has revealed that it is a possibility we cannot ignore that there is a wider group of individuals linked to this attack. This morning I said that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, the independent organisation responsible for setting the threat level on the basis of the intelligence available, was keeping the threat level under constant review. It has now concluded, on the basis of today’s investigations, that the threat level should be increased for the time being from severe to critical. This means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly likely, but that a further attack may be imminent.”

The prime minister said Operation Temperer - allowing military personnel to take to the streets - was now in force: “This means that armed police officers responsible for duties such as guarding key sites will be replaced by members of the armed forces, which will allow the police to significantly increase the number of armed officers on patrol in key locations. You might also see military personnel deployed at certain events such as concerts and sports matches, helping the police to keep the public safe.”

Serious / How have your views changed over the last few years?
« on: May 21, 2017, 11:14:43 PM »
I'm definitely more left-wing on economic issues:
Quote
No longer oppose the minimum wage

No longer oppose the existence of the BBC

Not as sceptical of fiscal stimulus or government intervention

More in favour of a 'generous' safety net

More concerned with income/wealth inequality

More concerned with policies to ease labour market dislocation caused by international trade and automation

More amenable to agricultural/rurality subsidies.

Increased desire for intensive infrastructure/human capital spending by the government.

Less concerned with the deficit/less convinced by austerity.

Want to see a shift towards the Commonwealth post-Brexit; trade, particularly with the poorer African, Carribbean and Oceanic countries. Could prove to be mutually beneficial while being more effective than aid ever could

Greater desire for active industrial policy

Less in favour of the government's free schools plans

Socially, I've probably moved in a more conservative/non-liberal direction. Although in some aspects I am more liberal:

Quote
Less convinced by arguments for drug legalisation.

More concerned with the breakdown of communities/the social fabric in certain parts of developed countries.

Greater appreciation for punishment as a criminal justice tool (alongside rehabilitation).

More concerned with the integreation of immigrants and natives.

Much more appreciation for marriage as a fundamental institution of a functioning society.

Generally more tolerant of Islam as a religion, and more understanding of the sociological, legal, cultural and political aspects to Islam that has made it the way it is.

Foreign affairs, pretty much the same. Maybe slightly less interventionist:

Quote
Don't agree with intervention on spreading democracy grounds. Do agree for significant humanitarian or security concerns.

Want improved diplomantic links with the Commonwealth.

More appreciation for good done by international aid, but I'd prefer it to be limited to almost purely medical endeavours.

Less tolerant of the Saudi regime or the British government's relationship with it.

Supportive of Trump's airstrike.

Glad Rutte won. Glad Macron won.

Constitutionally, probably more conservative:

Quote
Absolutely no desire to see a reformed House of Lords. Maybe, at the most, sectoral and regional representation I could be persuaded on.

I like the regional decentralisation/introduction of mayors on basically Burkean grounds.

Devolution was a mistake.

Referenda are mistakes.

I appreciate FPTP more.

Do not want the Church of England to be disestablished.

Voted Brexit on the basis of sovereignty.

I'm too tired to think of any more.
