Serious / Re: What should be the responsibilities of the government?
« on: December 20, 2014, 03:29:51 PM »
Can you elaborate more on what you said earlier about a sort-of safety net? Is that for business or for the poor (assuming you were referring to welfare)?
I'm talking more about social issues. Things like the preservation of order are obviously important, and maintaining something of a safety-net in terms of welfare is equally important - as well as education, healthcare, immigration and the like.

When it comes to economics? There's a role for the government, but it's much less interventionist than what we have today.

Do you think education, military, infrastructure, and other large government services can be better suited in the private's hands?
Not the military. Infrastructure. . . Probably. Education? Partly.

It's difficult to be constitutional about this - I can't give you a set of rules for the governing of privatisation. If you want me to answer for my own country and the for the medium term, then for infrastructure: yes, for education: no.

The government should be there to provide a sort-of "net" against substantial risk.

If it begins to become a nanny-state, or overtly oppressive, it begins to threaten fundamentally important things and runs the risk of becoming bloated.

Oh, and it should also be sovereign.

I was going to say Avatar is also over-rated, but that was only over-hyped.

It's practically cool to hate it now.

He isn't correct though. You can't live a "fabulous life" on minimum wage in America at all. You can't even live a good life. And to top it off, he says all this while having a bunch of super cars.
I'm not saying he is correct. I'm saying his wealth shouldn't be an issue. If you think he's wrong - fine, then say so. But I don't think the fact that he drives expensive cars needs to be an issue of the debate.
It's relevant to the point he's trying to make. I'm bringing it up because it's insulting to those of us who have been and/or are poor. Not only is he wrong, he's saying shit he's never experienced.
And that's fine, but it isn't necessarily his fault he's naive and wealthy. If you want to bring it up, then fine. But it just comes across like you're bashing him for being wealthy as opposed to being ignorant. That's my only problem here.

His wealth, while perhaps contributory, shouldn't be a point of criticism itself.

Perhaps it has a bearing on him being wrong, but it needn't be brought up.

Considering that he seems to be clueless on the subject that is likely the case. I think some people were just insulted that someone could be so ignorant about life and just immediately assumed his wealth was the reason for it, not the other way around like you suggested.
No, that's exactly what I'm criticising. . .

Apart from that, it's insulting to those of us who were and/or are poor for him to say that while he has a garage full of super cars. What the fuck does he know about "living a fabulous life on minimum wage" if he's never experienced living a life off minimum wage?
I'm not concerned with whether or not he's experienced it; that doesn't disqualify him from being right. If he were to say something like "It's possible for British working-class single mothers to put kids into private school" without experiencing that, I know he'd still be correct.

I don't agree with his point, I just think his wealth has nothing to do with him being correct. Perhaps it has a bearing on him being wrong, but it needn't be brought up.

It's stupid to make such a grand generalization.
I'm not disputing that. He was, for the most part, wrong. The point I'm making is that it isn't necessarily because he's wealthy, and we shouldn't be making it about that. The fact that he drives expensive cars should have no bearing on the assertion he makes - that's irrelevant, to be honest.

That's the thing I'm concerned about.

Why the fuck are we all jumping on BC's dick because he's rich. I don't know how he made his money, but being rich doesn't disqualify him from understanding fundamental aspects of human psychology and motivation.

Is he better off than most people and, probably, everybody on this forum? Yes. If he removed from the daily struggles of most people? Sure. But that doesn't make him wrong, in any sense. If you disagree with him, just because he's rich, then you're just as guilty as what you criticise him of.
His wealth and status has nothing to do with the fact that living a "fabulous life" on minimum wage is impossible in the US.
That's just as arrogant a thing to say as "everybody on minimum wage should be happy".

While the minimum wage might be unsatisfactory to you - and a lot of others - that doesn't mean you can dictate whether or not people are capable of living fulfilling lives in that situation, especially when you're thinking in purely financial terms.
