Now I know how the Greeks felt during the financial crisis.

No matter which side of the political aisle you stand on, how could anyone in the UK not see this as a national embarrassment.
For what it's worth, most of Europe still wants you to remain and understands that this mess / no-deal Brexit is not something most people want.

In seeing a lot of people who - not here specifically - will discuss what political statement was made when something like this happens, I'll just say that I find it preferable to not give mass shooters the dignity of politicizing them beyond their philosophical violation of human rights. I think that if your idea of accomplishing political or religious goals is by means of massacring innocent people, you simply aren't worth listening to beyond how long it takes before we can figure out what exactly is going wrong in your sick mind. Because I don't believe that people who think it accomplishes anything are in touch with reality.
There's definitely an argument to be made that giving mass shooters that kind of attention can create copycats and give them what they want, but we shouldn't just ignore their motivations. Studying, discussing and analyzing their beliefs and the political statement they want to make can help us understand these people, recognize warning signs, cut off avenues to radicalization, raise awareness and hopefully prevent some of these attacks from happening in the future. If a shooter is clearly motivated by far right ideals and racism, we should absolutely discuss how he got to that point and address the spread of these kinds of toxic beliefs.

No need to get all salty because I don't enjoy your favorite anime. We don't all have as much free time (or care) to spend writing down detailed reviews of cartoons or games. Seems pretty obvious that much of these snide remarks still stem from me calling you out over your stupid comments in that Serious thread. Get over yourself my man.

There's no serious remain camp left at this point. Despite massive public opposition, there's no real remain platform anymore. May's propositions failed because both sides absolutely shafted them. Her main plan was rejected by the largest majority in the history of the UK Parliament. There was a big crowd of both remainers and leavers outside of the House and all of them cheered when the proposition failed because no one wanted it. The last time anything even remotely as bad (but still not nearly as devastating) happened was in 1924.

In the beginning of April, Parliament then voted on 8 different options for Brexit. One of the possibilities with the least support? No deal Brexit. The two propositions with the most support (and closest vote, only being defeated by a handful of votes)? A Customs Union with the EU (a very soft form of Brexit) with 49% of the votes and a second referendum with 47%. Even if you'd take all of the remainers out of Parliament, there doesn't seem to be any option that would be supported by a majority of the remaining leavers.

It's very clear that no deal, which is what we're heading for right now and what Johnson is hoping to achieve by shutting down the only directly elected body of the UK government, is an unpopular option both among the elected politicians and the general public. Around 50% of the people want to stay while the other 50% wants to leave. Out of the 50% that wants to leave, only a minority wants to leave without any deal or arrangement whatsoever. It's crazy that this worst case option that doesn't even have support of a third of all voters is now what the UK is being forced to go through with as if it's "the will of the people". The fact that the prime minister (a huge Brexiteer) is now able to shut down the actually elected body one month before the expiration of the deadline so that it has next to no time left to properly debate or pass anything is just a disgrace no matter where you stand on this.

EVA EPISODE 3:

So many pan shots over still images. Gets beat up by bully whose seemingly nice friend just stands by and smiles as if it's common. No one questions why a child is the pilot of humanity's only real defense. Literal 0/10 monster design. Kid finally showing some emotion is good. The tiny little knife as the ultimate attack was honestly just laughable. Start of bully redemption arc was okay. Monster fight was uninspired.

3.5/10, was waiting for it to end and am losing interest.

You'd think people would have voted Remain if they had wanted to remain as opposed to leaving the EU.
I personally know a leave voter who said he'd rather stay than have a no deal exit at this point. Don't act like it's not possible.

>Trump calls a national vote that is completely non-binding, non-committal and 100% advisory to gage public opinion
>"should the USA split into separate states"
>51% of people who voted say yes
>turmoil ensues because A) the votes are extremely divided across the country (some neighboring states vote 95% no but are still forced to break up) and B) no one knows agrees on what "split into separate states" means
>some people think this means keeping everything the same but just without a federal government, others believe this means that all trade and free travel between them has to stop immediately, some think the military should remain shared, others believe it means that people living in a different state than the one they were born in have to relocate back, some think there should be full-on fences marking the borders and traffic stops between each state, others think the dollar should become defunct and every state now needs its own currency...
>Trump doesn't care and signs an executive order saying that the US will simply fall apart in different countries in just 2 years (pretend this is legal) and that Congress just has to sort it out by then
>suddenly, it becomes clear that many of the arguments of the "split" campaign were downright lies (literally the next morning, the primary splitter goes on TV to announce that his main promise of "if we split, every state will receive 100 billion $ as a send-off gift" was entirely bogus)
>it also becomes known that the split campaign violated several voting / funding laws, that foreign interference took place and that extensive voter manipulation happened after a huge misinformation campaign
>as time goes on, it turns out that the process of splitting isn't the promised quick walk in the park as it effects literally EVERYTHING about society (healthcare, military, defense, education, research, finance, borders, security, monetary policy, housing, trade, imports, exports, employment....) and that no one that voted the same way (split) can even agree
>millions of people that voted to split because they merely wanted the federal government gone now find out that they might be sent back to the state they were born in, that a border wall will be pulled up around their entire state, that they need a visa to visit family in the next state over, that they'll be moving to the TexaDollar (which is a lot less valuable than the CaliDollar), that their pensions are cut drastically because their state alone cannot cover it all, that they might be conscripted in the military because there's no longer a large overarching army...
>meanwhile, more and more analyses and studies show that the economy is taking a hit, that the general population is getting screwed, that the rich who were behind the split campaign are moving assets around to play the markets and make millions, and that the split will have serious impacts on the separate states
>plenty of people who voted split now find out that the outcome they envisioned will never happen but that their vote has been hijacked to push through a much more radical and extreme plan they would've never preferred over a United States
>none of the proposed plans are accepted by more then a small group of society so they're all rejected in Congress
>people like you claim that legislators doing their job and trying to find a deal that more than 5% of the population supports are undemocratic, stalling and subverting the will of the people
>several years later, now that all of that has become clear, millions want another vote since the situation has changed drastically (but this request is denied because, apparently, it would be "undemocratic" to vote on something again years later under completely different circumstances with a lot more information being available on the outcome and, as we all know, it's absolutely undemocratic for anyone to change their mind)
>the time limit expires
>no option is supported by more than a small group of people because the "split" campaign is a basket case of people who want different things (anarchists who want to get rid of all governments, radicalists who want complete autonomy and no trade with anyone else, moderates who only wanted the federal government to have less of a say...)
>so the most extreme option of all, the one that is supported by probably not even 10% of people (as opposed to the 49% that wanted things to stay the same), of "no deal" is accepted by default, meaning that all borders are immediately closed, that there's zero trade happening between states, that no one can move outside of their state, that the dollar becomes defunct, the military is dissolved, all healthcare services and government programs instantly expire and so on...

GOTTA LOVE DEMOCRACY MAN!

Spoiler
jokes and exaggerations aside, your understanding of what happened is pretty inaccurate. In the end, this was a non-binding and advisory vote that boiled an incredibly complex issue down to a very vague yes/no question that an absolutely marginal majority decided would affect important aspects of your life. Since everyone who voted "no" had a different idea of what this meant, you don't have a single unified "no" camp but a dozen factions that all want their own thing (many of which would rather keep things the same than have another version of "no"). Imagine if you were asked to vote on whether taxes should be raised. You vote no. The next day, the government announces that because 51% said that taxes shouldn't be raised, they now have a mandate to cut all public funding for education, healthcare, NASA, environmental protection and research to fund military expansion instead. Oh, you disagree? Well too bad, you said you didn't think taxes could be raised so this is the alternative. Oh, you think it should actually be voted on how we manage the budget without raising taxes and what should be prioritized? Well, fuck you, you're just trying to stall the process and subvert the will of the people that want lower taxes. Oh, you want to vote again now that you know what will happen if we can't raise taxes? You fucking make me sick, THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE HAS SPOKEN THIS IS DEMOCRACY.

The Flood / Re: The Definitive Guide to Making Anime Tolerable

I'll be brief because I don't have much time. The "toxic/abusive" part of her attitude came primarily from the dinner scene where he briefly hesitates before eating and as a reaction she lashes out, throws her beer to the side, (literally) gets in his face and starts yelling at him when he tries to explain. Then, a quick smile and all is forgotten because, as the next shot abudantly shows, she has her chest right in his face and acts all cutesy. In my opinion, that's pretty damn abusive and I feel the show just glosses over it and to an extent normalizes it as a completely unremarkable event where her lashing out is just swept under the rug with a shot of her ass. That's pretty toxic stuff if this were to happen in real life, and I fail to see how it's anything other than that. Think of this happening IRL with an adult caretaker that just took in a schoolkid after being hospitalized. Even better, swap the genders and put an adult man across from a young teenage girl. Shitty and abusive, imo. This ties into the "predatory" part where there's clearly some sexual vibes coming from her (see episode 1 where her invitation to him is a suggestive picture of herself in a bikini with an arrow between her tits), telling him how cute he is, just looking at him being naked for an extended period of time and such.

And I get that the guy's meek and afraid and all that, but I'm completely uninvested in him as of this point. I'm sure that'll change but he's been a wet blanket with no remarkable personality so far, imo.

Maybe I should come up with an actual scale or something. Like:

4/10 = "the show is bad, but it was somewhat tolerable and while I didn't have a good time, I can stand watching it"

7/10 = "I actually enjoyed watching this, this anime is actually what I would consider good"

9/10 = "would recommend to others and actually admit I watched it"

Something like that, you know?

EVA EPISODE 2:

Not gonna do a full review for everything because I don't want to keep taking notes. Most of this episode was tedious to watch. The woman is toxic as hell and this show just normalizes her being abusive and predatory towards some kid. The socializing (which was most of this episode) was just unenjoyable and meaningless. Main character is completely uninteresting and is about as non-engaging of a persona I can think of: he's just there and apathic. The penguin was dumb - I already pointed out how adding these kinds of things counts as a negative.

The episode definitely would've dropped down to a 2 or 3 out of 10 had it not been for the final part. The fight was pretty good and there were some neat shots in there (skull of the robot at the end, for example). The robot roaring and acting like an actual creature is surprising and strange, but I assume will be explained later (just like why the boy has to pilot it).

4/10

Blank / white glasses trope.
Gendo is the one who popularized it
yeah, a fair few of eva's tropes are 100% fine, because it was the first to do/was the codifier of a lot of those things

cliches are cliches, but i can't really begrudge the originator of them

most of your nitpicks so far haven't been completely invalid though

as someone who generally dislikes mecha designs wholesale, i actually really like the design of the evas
That's fair then. Still going to point it out as something I personally think is dumb but if this anime is what started it then I can only fault it for my own dislike and not for just sticking to a trope.

And maybe the designs will still change (my mind). I've only seen one monster and one mech so far so maybe we'll get some more variety down the line.

EVANGELION EPISODE 1:

BAD:

Intro is really bad. Bad song and really cliche shots. This one goes the extra mile by adding in the really fast transitions and flashing shots of text. I also saw it in that preview someone linked in the other thread, so I guess it's just a thing this show does. Really not good at all.
Robot design. Like I said earlier, too skinny and too long arms.
Blank / white glasses trope.
"Hey you almost got stepped on by this huge monster, let me crack a joke when I show up to collect you with my car".
The dumb shot of them just hanging out of the car with their mouths open as the shockwave blows past.
Is his teacher hitting on him? (Oh wait it's apparently not his teacher but still)
The background going black, jazzy song coming on for sad internal monologue.
Ugh, it's the exaggerated face with the sweat drop and annoyed look.
Repeated use of the same shots.
(Schoolkid has to get in the one of a kind combat robot that's humanity's last hope to defeat the monster. I suppose there'll be some kind of an explanation but it's pretty dumb so far, yet I won't hold it against it).
Every woman is super sexual, super attractive and in some high government position.
Voice acting and general reactions during the show are typical anime and pretty annoying.
Outro is also pretty bad, but could be worse.

GOOD:

Some pretty cool shots. All the tanks lined up at the start, car getting knocked over by the blast, monster grabbing the rocket...
Not too many annoying things, really. A few here and there but it's so far tolerable.
Story and setting seem good.
Art style's decent (but robots look pretty bad, unfortunately).

RATING: 4.5/10. It's like a mirror of Gundam. Very similar so far, but it deserves that extra half point for not using the same combat shot twice in literally 10 seconds (granted, there hasn't really been any combat yet but still) and for having slightly better character design.

i feel like before you watch eva though, you have to understand that it's not really just a mecha show

without spoiling anything, the show actually has a lot to say about anime itself and the people who watch it

it's a show that requires you to be a little bit charitable, otherwise it's going to be VERY easy for you to pick it apart

i'm only saying this because i wish someone had said it to me before the first time i watched it

GUNDAM WING SEED EPISODE 1

The bad:

Intro song is really, really bad. Fuck me.
Flashbacks of him with his buddy through a rose colored lens in a garden with petals falling. Jeez.
Over the top anime voice reactions almost from the start and my god, super high pitched anime girl voice acting, wtf.
Art style is unremarkable.
Oh no, it's one of these shows where the leads (in a full blown war) are just high school kids. Great.
Bad guy is wearing some outfit completely different from the rest and some phantom of the opera style mask.
Fashion choices are predictably bad. Some random person shows up with some massive jacket and an orange beret. What.
Random segment in the middle where girl spins around blowing bubbles at brightly colored ball creatures in the air. Why?
Many shots that are just the camera panning over still images. Cutting costs, I get it, but ugh.
THE FIRST TWO SHOTS OF ACTUAL COMBAT ARE THE EXACT SAME FOOTAGE. Not even exaggerating, it's literally the same.
Bright red power ranger armor as spy stealth gear in the woods, wonderful choice.
Jeez, the lieutenant combat pilot is also a super attractive woman in unique clothing. Who would've thought.
"We're being attacked and bombed but I still have time to be all surprised and woed when the stranger I've been around all this time turns out to be a girl".
Drawn out inverted color scheme. Doesn't look good, has no impact.
Oh it's the boy from the rose pettal scene. Wouldn't have thought that in a million years.

The good:

Some shots were pretty cool, like when the three robots lined up.
The setting with the ongoing war and neutral faction is pretty good.
Art style could be worse (but stop reusing shots and just panning over stills, please).
No crazy chibi stuff so far and no really big/small characters.

I give it a 4/10 which probably places it in the top percentile by anime standards, I don't know.

STEP 4:

The opening and closing intro / outro song. Intolerable for literally every single anime I have ever seen (except for Pokemon, that shit rocked). It's always the same, it's always horrible. Same shots, same themes, same BS. Songs with random cringey lyrics. Anime either needs to make a good (short) opening or just ditch them altogether. The latter is probably best.

Get rid of it all, anime.
