The Flood / Sports: Roland Garros / French Open
« on: May 29, 2015, 08:22:04 AM »
So, it's that time of year again. The apex of tennis on gravel.

So far, not many surprises among the men. All of the top players are still in the tournament and they're all playing well. Same thing can't be said for the women, unfortunately, where many of the top players are already out of the grand slam. Here's to hoping that Serena Williams gets owned soon as well, because no one likes her.

Anyone else watching? For those interested, pretty good livestreams can be found here and here.

Only other tennis fan that I know of will already be disappointed as Raonic isn't participating this time. Poor Tblocks.

Games to watch right now are Federer (of course), Wawrinka and Simon. Up next are Sharapova (for those who like the better looking female players) and Berdych in a few hours.

Serious / Plane Crash in France - 150 feared dead
« on: March 24, 2015, 08:08:42 AM »
Basically, a plane crashed for (as of now) unknown reasons in the French Alps. Because of the remote and dangerous area, rescue operations are slow, but it is feared that all 150 people on board died.

An Airbus plane operated by Germanwings with at least 144 passengers, two pilots and four flight attendants on board has crashed in the French Alps region.
In a live briefing on Tuesday, French President Francois Hollande said it was unlikely that there were survivors, adding that the area of the crash was remote.
Hollande said it was probable that a number of the victims were German. It was not clear whether anyone on the ground had been hurt, he said.
"It's a tragedy on our soil," Hollande said about the crash that ocurred near Digne-Les-Bains in Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence.
Hollande "extended all his support" to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a phone call, the French presidency said in a statement, while the German ambassador to France said she would visit the crash site in the southern Alps within hours.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said in a statement that at least 45 Spanish passengers were believed to be onboard the plane.
Spain's King Felipe VI, in France on a state visit, also said there were no signs of survivors. Felipe said he would be suspending the visit in the wake of the crash.
"We know it was in an area where access is extremely difficult and that the search will be complicated," he added.
'A loud noise, then nothing'
The owner of a camping site in Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence said he heard the plane come down.
"There was a loud noise and then suddenly nothing. At first I thought it came from fighter jets that often hold drills in the area," Pierre Polizzi told Al Jazeera.
"The plane crashed just 2km from here, high on a mountain," Polizzi, owner of Camping Rioclar, said.
Eric Ciotti, the head of the regional council, said search-and-rescue teams were headed to the crash site at Meolans-Revels.
French TV reported that 240 local firefighters and three police squadrons were mobilised for the rescue effort.

The Flood / What to buy? (normal edition)
« on: March 05, 2015, 08:54:33 AM »
Long story short: I got a 100$ Amazon gift card and as it turns out, Amazon credit doesn't transfer between stores. In other words, I can buy 100$ of stuff in the US Amazon store.

The reason I'm not just saving it for when I need to buy something is that my girlfriend will be moving from the US to the EU to come live with me. Seeing how very few sellers ship across the Atlantic and it usually costs a ton in shipping, I'm thinking of spending the 100$ now and have my girlfriend bring over the goods when she comes over.

I already have a similar thread up in Gaming for video game specifics, so this one is for all things that aren't video games. Recommend me stuff to buy.

As I like playing video games, this thread is about games and accessories in particular. Recommend me good games (all platforms except for next-gen) that I should buy. Any genre is welcome.

(Reuters) - Black-hooded gunmen shot dead at least 11 people at the Paris offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, a publication firebombed in the past after publishing cartoons lampooning Muslim leaders and the Prophet Mohammad, police said.

President Francois Hollande headed to the scene of the attack and the government said it was raising France's security level to the highest notch.

"This is a terrorist attack, there is no doubt about it," Hollande told reporters.

Another 10 people were injured in the incident and police union official Rocco Contento described the scene inside the offices as "carnage".

"About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs (rifles)," witness Benoit Bringer told the TV station. "A few minutes later we heard lots of shots," he said, adding that the men were then seen fleeing the building.

France is already on high alert after calls last year from Islamist militants to attack its citizens and interests in reprisal for French military strikes on Islamist strongholds in the Middle East and Africa.

British Prime Minister David Cameron described the attack as sickening.

Late last year, a man shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") injured 13 by ramming a vehicle into a crowd in the eastern city of Dijon. Prime Minister Manuel Valls said at the time France had "never before faced such a high threat linked to terrorism".

A firebomb attack gutted the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, a publication that has always courted controversy with satirical attacks on political and religious leaders, in November 2011 after it put an image of the Prophet Mohammad on its cover.

The last tweet on Charlie Hebdo's account mocked Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State, which has taken control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria.

It seemed strangely familiar at first, yet I couldn't put my finger on it for quite some time. Then, suddenly, it hit me. It's Byrne's weeb eating girl that he has for a profile picture.

Thanks a lot Byrne. I just recognized my first chinese anime person because of you and your unrelenting corruption of fair and rightous forum members.

The Flood / Flood plays: Game Developer Tycoon
« on: December 22, 2014, 12:57:22 PM »
The concept is pretty straightforward. I play the game based on your input. For those unfamiliar with what Game Dev Tycoon is, it's a game where you start as an independent game developer in your parents' basement back in the early days of gaming. You develop games, make money and build an empire. Easy, no?

But before we get to all that, we need to start by giving our company a name. What shall it be?
