I just might tune in if im bored, its always fun to watch high speed arena combat.

On a side note, been playing the original unreal tournament, my first 5 minutes or so of it were more fun than any other recent FPS.
Well, Quake Live is free on Steam. It'll run on pretty much any PC and still has an active community with regular tournaments. It'll match your skill level with others and pair you up with beginners so you don't get put up against people with hundreds of hours into the game straight away. And if that is still daunting, you can also host your own games and play against bots of any skill level.

Gaming / Quakecon 2015
« on: July 11, 2015, 08:56:58 AM »
It's that time of the year again, folks. Everybody's favorite and most hyped esport event is coming up shortly, and I felt that it deserved a thread of its own.

Quakecon 2015 will take place July 23 - 26 in Texas and will be livestreamed for all to see and enjoy.

YouTube

As opposed to the previous years, Quakecon will now be employing a tri-masters tournament set-up. No longer will this be a duel only event (1v1 mode), but Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch will be getting some love too. Players cannot sign up individually but instead have to participate as part of a team.

This year's line-up is brilliant too, as just about every top player will be present. Cypher, Rapha, Evil, Cooller, Dahang, Tox, Strenx and many others will be competing for the $50,000 price pool.

For anyone even remotely interested in FPS games or esports, this is an amazing event with some of the best players in the world competing in what is praised as one of the best games ever made. I'll update this thread with livestreams and such when we get closer to the start.

- General information.
- Quakecon Subreddit.
- Bethesda Blog.

- FPS Pulse for general Quakecon information.
- Plusforward.net for general Quakecon information.
Additionally, and the main reason that I made this thread now, there is a "road to Quakecon" tournament taking place this very weekend. This tournament is online (not through LAN) and has a smaller price pool, but counts as a final meeting / preparation of the players before the actual main event takes place. Today, we're having the main event (being the 1v1 Duel mode), while tomorrow there's going to be team deathmatch and capture the flag between some of the strongest teams. You can watch it all live here. Brackets and general information can be found here.

"But Flee, I am just a casual noob with no interest in games for real men. Why should I watch?"
Well, as you might know, Quake is game made by iD software and Bethesda. While the tournament focuses on Quake, there is a lot more going on that just that. As recently anounced, there will be new footage and demos of Fallout 4, the new DOOM game and the upcoming ESO expansion, along with a massive LAN-party, an amateur league and a build your own computer / case contest at this year's Quakecon. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for, if you're into these things. Besides, this game deserves all the loving it can get.

So for now, come watch the Road to Quakecon tournament where Cypher is just about to play Fazz.

> hire temp CEO right when they push new policies and make her responsible for them

> replace her with old public favorite as the ultimate solution to make everything better
> vague statements about "clear content policy" to come
> present the news on friday afternoon (the time people care the least)

Nothing will change. This is literally PR 101, straight out the book. I don't give two shits about Reddit, but this is the perfect way to make the people feel good and happy about the way things are going while nothing gets fixed and the same problems persist.

If you quote-reply to me ITT in about 30 mins or so, I'll see the notification when I get back from work and I can perhaps try to explain some of the psychology behind it <.<
Maybe not the best explanations, but I can give it a shot.

A quick google search seems to indicate that it does, though.
Oh I've no doubt that standards are higher.

It's just, as far as I know, it's incredibly hard to actually monitor and enforce agricultural regulation. Myriad countries are under the same rules as Belgium within the EU (Britain being one) and yet their standards, IIRC, fall markedly below what has been accomplished elsewhere.
That is true. Most of this seems to be regulated by a directive, not a regulation after all.

Does anyone know if the animals in the EU are off any better than those in the US?
To be honest, I highly doubt it.

Agriculture seems like one of the hardest economic sectors to regulate properly.
A quick google search seems to indicate that it does, though. Several articles praise the EU's protective laws of farm animals (going as far as naming them the best in the world and decades ahead on the US), battery cages are effectively banned, minimum standards exist for their transport, storage and slaughter, the use of hormones and other such tools is much more restricted, standards for the meat / dairy / eggs / animal products are much higher than the ones in the US and so forth. Apparently, the EU employs five freedoms. The animals must be: free to express normal behavior (roam, proper facilities, contact with other creatures), free from malnutrition, thirst and unreasonable suffering, free from discomfort (resting areas, food / water), free from pain / injury / disease to a reasonable extent, free from unreasonable fear and distress.

I'm sure it's still far from perfect, but my family buys primarily local goods. Going by what I've gathered from a recent documentary on Belgian agriculture and the fact that part of my family are farmers, I really doubt that the things you see in Earthlings exist here to the same extent. It's not much of a justification, but I do know that many animals here are treated in a very humane way.

Meta you fuck, I spent like 10 minutes on that just for you. The least you can do is a like or response.
Ha, I was on a driving lesson.

It's certainly interesting though; would it be possible to get rid of juries in common law countries? Or are the two simply too intertwined?
Theoretically possible? Sure. But practically feasible? Eh, probably not any time soon. Trial by jury ties in nicely with the adversarial system that common law countries generally employ. While inquisitorial systems rely on the judge and court to actively investigate the case and seek out the truth themselves, the adversarial ones rely on the parties and their attorneys to do that research and then present their findings. Obviously, it's a lot more evident that a jury plays a larger role in the system where the court's role is simply to rule on the findings of others. I do think that common law countries will gradually move away from the juries (similar to what's happened in the EU), but it will take time and might never disappear completely.

That being said though, there are some benefits to trials by jury. I just don't think they're significant enough to outweigh the cons. But it has its uses. Especially when it comes to cases involving the worst of crimes. The way it (used to) work in Belgium is that a great deal of cases would normally end up for the Court of Assise (the highest criminal court which still has a jury). However, there was an extensive list of exceptions that "correctionalised" all but the worst crimes to lower courts. Only those punishable by 25+ years or especially heinous ended up for the Court of Assise.

That's personally where I see this going for common law countries. Abandoning trial by jury for the civil (and lower criminal, perhaps) cases and reserving it only for certain crimes.

Don't even care that Murray lost tbh, he has the personality of cardboard, and this is coming from a Brit.

Federer is literally the embodiment of Wimbledon.
Murray is a good player, but he's such a scrub when it comes to his personality. Plus, he always looks bored and just drags himself along when he's not playing.

Following along on Twitter. Vintage Federer I'm hearing eh?
Yeah, Federer is playing incredible. Murray's throwing everything he has at him and Federer isn't budging at all. 7-5 and 7-5 so far.

Shame Raonic lost so early, by the way.
