Gaming / Re: Dark Souls remastered« on: June 04, 2018, 01:44:43 PM »You're right. I was more referring to some of the arguments you made. It's perfectly reasonable to think things should be different about a video game but parts of what you said to substantiate that were pretty iffy. To keep up with the pokemon analogy, it'd be fine for someone to think you should be able to catch other trainers' pokemon. It's an opinion and a value statement that isn't inherently wrong. But if the arguments they'd use to get that point across simply aren't correct in light of what we know to be "the truth" in or about the game ("actually all pokemon hate their trainers and are constantly yearning to escape and be caught by another trainer no matter who it is or how good they have it" - which is something that flatout contradicts and is incompatible with the pokemon lore / universe), then I think it's fine to correct that. You're free to think it should be changed, I just wanted to shed some light on some of the stuff you argued that I thought were based on some misunderstandings of the game. That's all.Nothing. It just means that you were wrong about that specific part of the game, now realize it and (hopefully) will no longer try to argue that same point.what point, though 603

It just means that you were wrong about that specific part of the game, now realize it and (hopefully) will no longer try to argue that same point. That's it. You're still free to dislike the invasion mechanic, opt out of it entirely, endlessly criticize it and think less of the game because of it. I don't care. We discussed invasions months ago when you just started your playthrough and I have no intention of doing that again. All I did was set the record straight because you had some misunderstandings and Dietrich didn't really clear them up because he was uncertain about them himself. 606
Gaming / Re: Dark Souls remastered« on: June 04, 2018, 12:05:59 PM »
tl;dr it's fine to dislike invasions and think it's a dumb mechanic, but the claiming of humanity as a reward makes perfect sense within the lore and is consistent with the way humanities and invasions of work. You haven't refuted that and I think the reason you disagree lies in a misunderstanding of the lore and the mechanics.

Gaming / Re: Dark Souls remastered« on: June 04, 2018, 11:50:34 AM »
You could've saved yourself some time if you had just clarified that by "refuting" (properly disproving a statement) you actually meant "disliking". Refuting would be to fully prove to someone that you do or don't randomly gain humanity when you die, when all you did was again talk about why you don't like the mechanic and why you think it's dumb game design - something that is pretty irrelevant to what I said. I didn't even try to argue that it's a good mechanic at as we've already been through that months ago. All I did was just explain why your reasoning of "if you have no soft humanity, invaders shouldn't get anything" doesn't make sense within the lore and the workings of the humanity/invasion/covenant mechanics (which, let's be honest, you're not really an expert on as this is your first blind playthrough and you actively avoid the entire multiplayer portion of the game). Everything I said is true and addresses your assumptions of how it "should work" because your understanding of it is just incorrect. Your "refutation" is just an explanation of why you think is dumb and should work differently because of incorrect reasons. That's all.
And yeah, you are kinda wrong about the "spending". You burn the humanity at a bonfire to absorb it and reverse your hollowing. Just as you have to burn tobacco to inhale the released smoke, you have to use the special fires of the bonfire to consume humanities. Once you do, the humanity infuses you and you once again become a full human until the next time you die. When this happens, your humanity (which you can think of as a human soul) evaporates and disappears unless this happens in the presence of a Darkwraith invader who then absorbs it instead. It becomes more obvious when you actually join the covenant, get the explanation, read the descriptions of the gear and receive the special humanity draining "dark hand" item, so I can't really fault you too much for not knowing this. Also, I was serious about the random humanity upon death thing. I've never heard about it before and there's nothing about it on the wiki. It's a big discovery if true but I suspect you might be confusing it with gaining seemingly random humanity from killing enemies before a boss. 608
Gaming / Re: Dark Souls remastered« on: June 04, 2018, 10:36:39 AM »You didn't though. "Invaders can only invade you when you're human" is a completely neutral and factual statement akin to "trainers can't catch pokemon owned by another trainer". There's no refuting that. "They steal your humanity when they kill you" is exactly the same. While your soft humanity is retrievable from your bloodstain, you lose your "active" humanity that's making you non-hollow. This is what the invaders claim from your corpse. They're not thieves that can rummage through your backpack and take your belongings. They can only absord the humanity that leaves your body as you die. You didn't refute that either but instead argued a misconception of how losing and reclaiming humanity works. Same goes for the final two sentences. The lore explains how this works. Your "refutation" of it just seems to be based on a misunderstanding of how the mechanic really works as there is no way for you to reclaim the "active" humanity when you're killed by an invader. You can say you think the lore's dumb and not a sufficient justification for the invasion mechanic, but it's consistent and your personal dislike of it doesn't refute any part of what I said.i addressed and soundly refuted every sentence of this post alreadyInvaders can only invade you when you are human. They steal your humanity when they kill you. This makes perfect sense and is why you can't be invaded when hollow. It's all part of the lore. You lose any soft humanity when you die, Invaders gain humanity even if you have none. It's really just a fantastic systemit's a joke 609

The Flood / Re: Some shit going down in Arizona. Child trafficking death camp discovered.« on: June 04, 2018, 07:18:45 AM »People that think they're the ones in the know when they're the most easily manipulated are extremely depressing but fascinating at the same time. I can't figure out if it's just stupidity or what.Plain stupidity is a part of it but it's got a lot to do with feeling disenfranchised. Many of these people are or were outcasts that are often uneducated, anxious and uncertain. Conspiracy theories are a way for them to get back at an unjust world and make it understandable. All of the successful, accomplished and intelligent people that outdo them in every way aren't actually doing any better at all because they're just puppets being controlled. "Normal" people are blind rats in a maze whose fancy degrees, good social relations and many accomplishments are meaningless bits of cheese while they're the ones who made it out of the maze, are "in the know" and see things how they really are. Most of these conspiracies are a convenient way to make complex things easier to understand and manage. Complicated scientific issuess (vaccines, global warming, space travel...) and political happenings are a lot more manageable when you don't need to understand any of it and can instead reduce it to "it's all fake, the evil government & big companies are behind it all". Your own failures and shortcomings are a lot more bearable when they're not really your own but (in part) due to the shadow government spraying chemtrails and manipulating everything. You might be an underachiever but surely that doesn't matter when everything is controlled by people keeping you down and you've got more important (conspiracy) things to focus on. After all, you're the good guy who sees through the lie and faces down the pure evil elite that apparently occupies itself with digging holes in the dirt next to an Arizona highway to rape and kill children, or something. The world's a shitty place and people look for security, order and validation. Some can't find these things normally and fail due to their own stupidity or other cirumstances. When that happens, everything becomes a lot more manageable when there's some kind of conspiracy that played a part in it all and that allows you to blame and fight against an easily classifiable scapegoat instead of trying to understand highly complex issues. It starts as a little seed ("I can't believe 9/11 happened because it's so horrible and now I'm reading (fake) news posts on Facebook it looks like some things don't add up") that just grows. And when one of those theories has taken a hold due to stupidity, ignorance and lack of information ("the government is covering up the 9/11 truth and the powerful media people are in on it"), it's a quick descent down a very deep rabbit hole ("since I can't trust any of the traditional media I follow TruthSeekerFreedomWarrior1776.blogspot.com which taught me all big companies are manipulating me and vaccines cause autism and global warming is a Chinese hoax and Democrats cover up for child raping devil worshippers"). It's utterly insane but to some it unfortunately makes sense. Last year I had a PM conversation with some guy on B.net who thought 9/11 was done Obama (not Bush, not the government, but specifically Obama - somehow). To him, demonstrable facts were lies and untold amounts of scientific hard evidence was fake and fraudulent. As soon as anything threatened the validity of any part of his story, he'd conveniently ignore it and go "what about X" before spamming another 10 links to conspiracy sites. Like you said, it's sad and depressing to see. 614

Just busy. Lots of stressful things going on. I'm hoping to submit a PhD proposal by September while simultaneously being part of a big project that's ending and another that's just starting. They're both about surveillance and law enforcement AI. The one that's ending has a final review meeting coming up at the European Commission headquarters and it's a lot of pressure. I'm trying to juggle all these things and a lot of people have very high expectations of me for all of them. It's not easy.
Other than that, my stream has really taken off and I've been pulling in a pretty consistent 100+ viewers these last few weeks. I now meet the Twitch partnership requirements so I put in an application and have them review my channel. Fingers crossed. 616
