Serious / Re: U.S. Justice Department to end use of private prisons.« on: August 19, 2016, 05:07:59 AM »Studies and practicalities aside, I've always thought it has a lot to do with them having completely different goals at the fundamental level. It's why you can privatise things like railroads and postal services, as both the public and private sector have the same objective (run a good, efficient program trying to expand and get more people to use the service). But private prisons are not like that, as they can only really expand and turn higher profits by being paid more by the government (which is already a no-go because of how costly that is) or by dealing with more prisoners. On the other hand, society as a whole and the public sector want fewer prisons, less convicts and less crime, which opens up a whole lot of possibilities of abuse by the private sector. Is there no contrarian position on this? Very rarely does the general stance on an issue seem so unanimous. Surely there must be some defense. There is usually a common theme when it comes to arguing for the privatisation/non-nationalisation of many services. These themes don't really hold up with prisons, and the evidence suggests that prisons really are an exception. 3880

Serious / Re: Moody's: UK to avoid recession, world economic to stabilise« on: August 18, 2016, 03:10:46 PM »I think you (indirectly) have most of them covered in the OP. As far as I'm aware and off the top of my head: consumer spending was good thanks to the good weather and tourism, inflation is up to 0.6%, unemployment is still at a low, manufacturers prices are up quite a bit (which is bad but counteracted by good consumer spending), Sterling is still low, job openings fell by several thousands, more companies are saying they will be hiring less in the future, and housing prices are down.the ONS figures came out this weeksheeeeit General consensus appears to be that the British economy is doing alright after the referendum, but that the worst is yet to come. Probably the main reason we're not seeing the downturn many had predicted is that Cameron broke his promise and didn't leave the EU right away, which was a pretty key part of Brexit analyses. So far so good though. ![]() 3882

Gaming / Re: so I played Sins of a Solar Empire with a couple friends tonight« on: August 17, 2016, 07:46:15 AM »Well, I do think they kind of aren't. Not that they can't be played in a competitive way, but when I think of the competitive RTS games I think of Starcraft 2, Brood Wars, Company of Heroes 2, Dawn of War and maybe Warcraft 3. Total War is hardly RTS to begin with and I've never thought of AoE as having the depth to really be comparable to the likes of Starcraft. Could be wrong though, I've never gotten that into the genre. They're nothing too competitive usuallyHahaha 3890

I have to say that I'm not a big fan of the flow of most maps. Some games can be a lot of fun, but the fact that so many are just mindless rush against defence at a single chokepoint is really a bit disappointing. I'm only level 12 and already feel that I've played out the exact scenario on the exact same maps several times.

Gaming / Re: Overwatch« on: August 16, 2016, 12:32:01 PM »What about the points and unlocks? So how does competitive ranking work? Still like 15 levels away from being able to play it.10 placement matches, then you get a rank 0-100. 40-50s is average. Then you play like its a normal game but no hero stacking and a bit more focused. You move up and down every match based on your proformace and if you won or lost. But its not by numbers, its by fractions. So i can loose a match but still be rank 60 if i was close to 61. 3895

And 230 of those 269 hours are Quake. |
