Serious / No threads about the new planets?
« on: February 24, 2017, 02:54:11 AM »
Surprised to see this not being discussed especially by the astronomy people. For those who don't know, there was a huge announcement at NASA a few days ago that we found the largest batch ever (7) of earth-size planets around a single star in a habitable zone. Three of them have a (relatively) decent chance of there being liquid water on them. Here's what they might look like.

https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-telescope-reveals-largest-batch-of-earth-size-habitable-zone-planets-around

And, unsurprisingly enough, the lead scientist and researchers are Belgian because that's just how we do things.

Let's also not forget that Project Veritas just dropped a tactical nuke on CNN with over 119 hours of leaked footage.
You're gonna have to elaborate on that. I just googled it and am not really seeing many implicating things.

The fact that their homepage literally says that "That issue, climate change, I mean science is pretty much on board and there are a few dissenters. There's no debate. It's like you know, born-agains saying there's a debate over, you know creationism, and all that stuff. There is no debate" is a profoundly liberal statement and that stuff like that is "anti-republican" doesn't boost my faith in them either. Reducing issues of science to party lines is beyond stupid.

So I'm in Berlin for a conference until Saturday and will actually have some time off to explore the city.

Anyone been here before or got some suggestions of things to do and visit?

Good points. Illustrates the problem we're looking at with echo chambers and confirmation bias very well. People tend to trust only what they want to hear and it's really fucking depressing. Wherever we're heading with all this, it really isn't anywhere good. The current state of news and social media is giving way too many idiots way too much leeway and power.

I am talking to a person on Bungie who is trying to convince there is nothing wrong or misleading about statements and headlines such as

Trump calls for "Muslim ban"

without Trump ever having used those words because, and I more or less quote him here, "it's perfectly acceptable because the quotation marks quote the journalist reporting on this and not Trump himself".

Are these people legitimately retarded? Post truth is real and it makes me reeeeee in the most autistic matter possible.

Discuss the lengths people will go to to defend their bias.

Liverpudlian will beat any and all contenders for the 'worst auditory assault' prize.

The guttural french is pretty bad too, I can't remember where it's from but I have a suspicion it was belgium. It's like a sort of snorty cough laid over normal honhonhon.
Not sure what you're talking about tbh.

And my people are the Flemish. We have the cleanest, most omnivalent accent imaginable. It's incredible, I tell you. The best accent. Just trust me.

What is the context of paying two guys to dance while holding a sign with "kill all jews" written on it? He complains that the media is after him just to get a a headline, but isn't that prank the same exact thing?
I think he says it is to illustrate how easy it is to get poor people in third world countries to do pretty ridiculous stuff for almost no money.

He was making a point about the stupid things you can do on Fiverr, but it really was just an indefensibly stupid joke. Yeah, he got beat up by the media, but maybe none of that would have happened if he'd simply apologized instead of making a 12 minute rant and flipping off the journalists that just did their job covering his fuck-up?
I agree it was stupid. I'm not trying to defend him. Just giving you his explanation on the context of the sign because you asked.

Bloodborne and Nioh are the only games I'd be interested in on PS4, so I'd recommend those I guess.

You're gonna have to forgive me for not accepting that as a valid source. To my knowledge, the court hasn't ruled on the actual constitutionality of his orders yet. They've just reaffirmed that there's enough evidence to suggest that they might, which justifies the temporary restriction (not invalidation) of the order. So far, literally everything I've read confirms that there are no issues with the court ruling on this.

These articles discuss the case in detail and cite numerous legal experts and law professors on the topic. None of them seem to argue against this court being able to do so. I'd find extremely unlikely to assume something as fundamental as court jurisdiction would be overlooked by so many experts, lawyers and courts themselves.
NPR is credible..
Yeah, what LC said. I know NPR is a credible source and I do believe Turkey when he says he heard something on there along those lines. But I'd like something I can read and look at myself. I want to understand the reasoning behind the claim, hear it from legal experts or see if there's legal precedents or something in the court's statutes precluding it from taking these cases. As much as I trust Turkey, "I heard it on the radio" wouldn't be enough to convince me no matter who said it.

But in general, executive orders are reviewed by the supreme court, and ever further, courts very rarely interfere with the legislative and executive powers to manage immigration because of the separation of those branches' power.
