Just enforcing the school policy.
I still don't understand why atheists can't just stand for 50 seconds and not say it. Just stand, thats it. But then again 90% of atheists are miserable assholes so....
1st Amendment>>>>>>school policy
Why can't atheists just express their 1st amendment right and not stand?
Why can't they just stand and not say anything?
Kids in other countries would literally kill to be in the same seat as them, in America.
and the kids who don't want to stand would literally kill to be in the same seat as me, in Europe where bullshit rules aren't applied.
Religion in science class, or school!? Holy shit, you guys sure do live in the dark ages.
I never had religion. Dark ages? Weren't they just in Europe?

Standing is a form of respect.
It's impossible to force a person to have respect for something. All you're doing is forcing people into feigning respect while simultaneously turning them away from whatever it is you're trying to get them to praise. Respect is earned, not demanded or imposed. If you want people to respect your military or country or whatever it is you feel is so important, the only way to do it is by actually making it worthwhile of respect. Something that right now, it very much arguably is not.
I disagree.
And the impeccable logic behind how forcing kids to stand up and mindlessly repeat a bunch words at the risk of otherwise being punished suddenly makes them full of respect of something is...? All you're doing is antagonizing people.
"How dare you not think living in America is the greatest thing ever? Let's punish you repeatedly so that all your doubts and bad feelings will magically transform into respect!" A student like that is like a dog. If a dog is afraid of people, you don't change that by beating him until he suddenly changes his mind and goes "actually, people are pretty great. I mean, being punished and treated like shit by them has definitely made me see them in a different light and respect what they stand for."
How is this not obvious?
Where did I say you have to say it? Just stand and stop acting like an edgy teenager.

Don't like it? GTFO
Thankfully, I am already out. Spent enough time there to know it's no place I'd want to live my life.
That sucks. Best country in the world by far.
Being patriotic is knowing America sucks, but also knowing its 100x better than any other country.
How can you know America sucks if aren't being taught it?
Living here?
I've always thought the best way to learn is to experience something firsthand.
But you can't go back in time and learn about the shitty things that have already happened.
Those things have no effect on me at all.
I don't think there's any more to say here.
Agreed

Standing is a form of respect.
What's there to respect if they aren't saying the Pledge?
Their teachers, their school, their state, their country, their military?
The military?
I have great respect for our troops. Yes.

You have no free speech when you are in school.
"You suck Mr. Smith" "1 weeks detention." "You can't do that its my first amendment right!" "Too bad, see you after school"

I don't see any problem here.
Well, the only problem was the guy calling and saying the other guy was waving around the gun when he actually wasn't. Police did nothing wrong as they got a call about a man pointing a gun at people, arrived, saw the supposed weapon, ordered him to drop it, he never dropped it, and was shot
Police are not some super-natural beings that know everything about a situation. They know as much as everybody else and what they are told about the situation at hand. Maybe if the caller didn't say the gun was being waved and pointed then this wouldn't have happened
There's this new thing called tazers and shooting people in the leg or arm. Lethal force is only appropriate if a civilian's (NOT a cop's) life is in immediate danger.
Nice opinion there.

What does the position of the student's body matter?
As a teacher, you know a student should be obeying you and the school policy. If you are told to stand, you stand. Its not a horrible request. If you're sick, disabled, ect. You can sit. Otherwise, why deliberately disobey authority?

I've never been religious, and I'd always say everything.
However, I'd rather it's changed because America is a secular state which focuses on freedom. I should have the freedom to not have to swear loyalty to something I don't believe in. I'm sure you'd feel the same way if you had to swear loyalty to Allah or Mahmad.
I 100% agree. But why can't someone stand for our troops/country and not say the pledge. Half my class wouldn't say the pledge and they would just stand and be quiet.
