For real though, when I say something is retarded, I don't mean any offense towards the disabled. I can't blame someone for something out of their control.

Serious / Re: How much value do you put on human life?
« on: September 14, 2014, 12:59:06 PM »
Human life has no intrinsic value.
So you also put no value on your own life?

As in you're not afraid of dying?
I think everyone values their own life.

But that value isn't really built-in. It's only worth what we think it's worth.
So what kind of worth do you put on your own life?
A lot, obviously, but I understand that's only because I really like it.

I'm sure my life means much less to some random-ass stranger, and I can understand why.

At the same time, there are people whose lives I value more than my own, people I would be willing to die to protect. Some of these people value their lives much less than I do, though, and have attempted to end their lives at some point or other.

It's all really subjective. Lives are all inherently equally valuable or valueless, depending on how you want to look at it, but we apply our own value. It's just what we do. Thing is, that only matters to us.

The universe does not care how much we like ourselves or others.

I think destruction of human life is something that is to be avoided in almost every instance if we want to have a functioning society.

That said, anybody who considers human life sacred, while willingly consuming meat and benefiting from pest control, is a hypocrite of the highest order.

Our lives are not inherently more valuable than those of cows or ants.

6835
.You don't believe every sperm is a person, and neither do I.

However when conception has happened, and a human being is developing (meaning its going to be like you and me), that's totally different.

As I said: deeming that future person as "inhuman" because people believe somehow that "doesn't look like a baby yet = not human" is just a cop-out.
Okay.

You still have to justify how that's of any consequence.
Ending a life using a gun, or an abortion clinic, either way your murdering somebody. But only one is illegal.

But I suppose we'll agree to disagree, because morals also play a factor.
Ending a life stepping on a bug, or gassing jews, either way your murdering somebody. But only one is illegal.

« on: September 14, 2014, 12:24:54 PM »
if your parents were pro abortion, you wouldn't even be here to argue about this.
That really is a stupid thing to say. No one is "pro abortion". People are either pro choice, meaning that to some extent they support others' right to choose whether or not they have an abortion, or pro life, meaning that they oppose abortion in (almost) all cases.
I dunno, Verb seems pretty pro-abortion to me.

The Flood / Re: Why do people get massive hard-ons for George Carlin
« on: September 14, 2014, 12:21:59 PM »
Well, yeah. I don't think anyone here is arguing that we should treat Carlin like a philosopher.
I'm just talking about people in general. A lot of Carlin fans I come across see his overwhelming fatalism and confuse it for philosophical or intellectual profundity.
Are we using fatalism in the same context?

I never really interpreted Carlin as believing in predetermination. Maybe that all just went over my head, but he never came off that way to me.

I always just thought he was a funny guy who made a lot of very valid social criticisms. I think he was smart, sure.

The Flood / Re: Why do people get massive hard-ons for George Carlin

The thing is, the cynical, bitter cunts are usually right.
That's way too broad a range.

Yeah, it's understandable how people are cynical and bitter, but that's a result. It's a descriptive, not pre-scriptive term. People shouldn't strive to be bitter or cynical.
I don't disagree.

And there's a massive gulf between being a social critic, as most of us are in some capacity, and an actual political, philosophical authority on the matter.

Well, yeah. I don't think anyone here is arguing that we should treat Carlin like a philosopher.
