Serious / Re: Boy Scouts of America fucking ban water gun fights« on: May 26, 2015, 11:09:01 AM »It's a really big plus on college and job applications, so that alone is worth it for some people. Why was it worth it?Eagle scout here. Yes, it was worth it. I'll encourage my kids to participate in scouting as well, if I have any.People still sign their kids up for that bullshit Boyscouts shit? Can anyone that was ever in Boyscouts, till the very end, say it was worth it? Like.. did they really become a better person and learn many useful things? I got a lot out of it on a personal level. Exposure to a lot of first aid training and outdoor skills. BSA instilled a deep love of the outdoors in me. Personal management. It was a big part in my development of a work ethic and sense of personal responsibility (this is heavily affected by troop culture, however. Some troops do not place enough respondibility and accountability on the scouts themselves). I also made some very good friends through scouting. 4979

Serious / Re: Boy Scouts of America fucking ban water gun fights« on: May 26, 2015, 09:11:43 AM »That's ridiculous. Although, I must say that I'd kind of understand it in a country with such a gun culture as the US. When you live in a country with 9 privately owned guns for every 10 people and over 1 in 3 households have guns in them, I can imagine that having kids simulate fire fights and pretend to shoot at each other might not send the right signals.I agree with Flee here. The BSA is overall pro-gun, and if I remember correctly have ties to the NRA. There are merit badges for rifle shooting and shotgun shooting (I earned both), and these courses have tight safety requirements. It would be silly for the BSA to offer these courses at summer camps while allowing play fights with feaux-guns or replicas, while conversely drilling the idea into scouts that a gun is dangerous at all times. These courses are offered to scouts from age 12 up, and the maturity level at the early ages is generally fairly low. I would expect the BSA to encourage scouts to treat firearms as tools for sport and competition at all times, instead of glorifying them as weapons in fantasy games. The BSA is actually what got me interested in guns in the first place, and also where the standards of firearm safety were drilled into me. I feel lucky to have developed this in a safety-oriented environment, instead of a house where guns are given to kids at christmas for hunting and left unsecured. My troop carried this safety-first attitude and, frankly, I'm very glad it did. |
