Pretty sceptical of the outcomes of these surveys as those responses can mean quite a few things.
Such as?
Pretty big difference between opposing someone's ability to criticise minorities and the harm some of their beliefs and practices might cause for our society on the one hand, and thinking that it should not be legal for people to publicly proclaim that all immigrants are filthy subhuman mudslime niggers who should be round up and eradicated.
You don't get to arbitrarily pick and choose what can and cannot be said in the dialogue of society. Either everything should be allowed to be said, or none of it should be. The only exception should be direct incitement to violence.
We've been doing exactly that, though. Picking and choosing what can or can't be said.
And that makes it right?
For good enough reasons? Sure.
I really don't know how you could extrapolate a good enough reason to clamp down on speech.
The most common reasons are the protection of people and the values in our society, really.
Funny, Hitler felt the same way when he shut down subversive elements like Bolshevism within Germany.

Depends on the crime. It should be obvious that legality=/=morality

And here is a good example of exactly why the Electoral College is needed, and why direct popular vote is a bad thing.
The popular vote normally wins anyway, only 4 times has the President won without the popular vote. Alongside this, the US is a democratic nation where people's views and thoughts should be equally represented, even if you disagree with said views.
It's not that simple considering how massive the US is and the main stay areas. The people in the smaller states wouldn't have nearly as much a say as those in big ones.
Good. Urbanites are fucking dumb.

The real problem here is that urbanites have as little business voting on policy that affects rural folk as those rural folk have imposing their will on city-dwellers. That is- none at all.

If you honestly believe that the state has the right to suppress EITHER of those things, you have no business calling yourself a liberal.

>implying this is new

That's my point. The Nazi allegories have honestly been done to death in Hollywood. Pick another boogeyman to saturate the industry with, like honestly.
Like half the point of Star Wars was Lucas' futuristic World War II fantasy (the other half being a retelling/thingy of 'The Hidden Fortress')

it's kind of hard to just ditch that fact and still have it be 'Star Wars'
I thought Star Wars was just Space Opera rendition of the Medieval Knights tale no? Laser swords, adventure, war etc.
WW2 was always meant to be a huge part of star wars, along with the other cheesy adventure serial stuff from Lucas' youth.

I read in a book somewhere that when Lucas showed test footage to producers, instead of mock fighter battles he spliced WW2 dog fight footage in.

militant ideologies in the wake of Ayatollah Khomeini's Iranian Revolution in 1979.
nigga did you just blame Shia Iranians for Sunni Arab radicals?

You realize Shia make up a small minority of Muslims, right? Their ideological and theological movements don't make waves in the Sunni world.

Wahhabism is a Saudi creation.

The "middle east" doesn't really exist on any level other than geographical. The region is very politically diverse and to suggest that the region, as a whole, hates or loves the US is ridiculous.

I think it was pretty clear what I meant.
It really wasn't. Did you mean Arabs? Muslims? People in Southwest Asia? Do you include North African Arab countries in your definition?

My university has so far been the antithesis of what I was made out to believe people would be acting like. Even the gender studies majors are pretty chill and rational about things. My critical thinking teacher also gave me an A on our final when I just ranted about PC for a couple questions.
where do you go to school?
University of Detroit Mercy. It's a private Jesuit university, so that helps I imagine.
Oh for sure lol

I'm at an east coast public liberal arts university, so the crazies are out in full force here.
I've yet to encounter the dreaded "liberal academia" at my university either, well at least not with the professors. I can't say the same concerning the student body. Most of my history professors have been Republican or center-right. One of the political science professors is actually a libertarian.
>Oklahoma or whatever flyover state
You're in real America

Urban North Carolina is to the South as California is to America.
I've had two professors plug Sanders' website repeatedly during class.

Why bring China into the conflict? This more or less might confirm that ISIS is just a tool for western powers political intrigues rather than just a loose pack of rabid dogs.

Just a reminder that Putin annexed a sovereign nation and nobody did jack shit about it. The guy's a warmongering piece of shit leading a cult of personality based on propaganda.
I don't think anyone's forgotten that. Least of all myself.

But it is fun to find a common ground in enemies like Daesh. And let's not forget that it isn't Putin writing on these bombs- it's Russian soldiers. They're as human as any American soldier.

LOL do you actually think China will do anything?

The PRC responds to Islamic terrorism by slaughtering truckloads of Uyghurs, not military action.

« on: November 20, 2015, 12:38:34 PM »
Full-on ground campaign clearing ISIS-held cities. Funding and arms going to the groups most likely to establish a stable government ie not Assad. Two to three local puppet states should be established as safe-havens for the larger minority groups. An Arab-run central government for most of Syria should be established. It should have a constitution guaranteeing protection to both Sunni and Shia groups within the country. A standing army should be established and trained for COIN warfare. Slowly wean this new Syrian army off of western support while keeping funding heavy- I'm talking US-Israel levels of support.

Whatever happens, do not allow the Russians, Iranians, or Chinese to develop better relations than you. Even if this means crab mentality.

Serious / Re: Islam vs. ISIS
« on: November 20, 2015, 12:05:09 PM »
I feel like it should be noted that it is difficult to differentiate ethnic conflict from religious conflict. Religious identity is a huge part of ethnicity. You can't really look at the latter without seeing the former. Religious justification often plays a part in ethnic conflict, and can be a catalyst between cultures with differing religions. Fuck, every single Serb shithead I've seen try and defend the genocides of the 90s cites the fact that NATO betrayed a "Christian nation" by backing the Muslim Bosniaks. When you look closely there aren't even many significant differences between Bosniaks and Serbs short of religion.

We're really not opening any new doors for the few who want to cause harm to us.

Bring em in and westernize them. America seems to be the one country in the world where Muslims can mix in to the national culture and westernize for whatever fucking reason. The less muzzies out there, the better.

Well, he has mastered viral marketing.

IMO someone like Trump or al-Baghdadi would be more relevant.

A "moderate" muslim declaring Jihadists to be nonmuslim is as absurd as a Catholic telling a Lutheran he's not a Christian.
