Whatever came of Ross Perot's 19%, though? The reform party didn't seem to gain much traction from that whatsoever.
When Ross ran his 19% year he did it as an independent, not as a Reform Party candidate. He founded the party later, and because the commision for debates riggs everything against newcommers, rule changes excluded the Reform party from the debates for the '96 election.He also received a lot less media attention, but still managed a little less than a tenth of the vote though. Everything became a shit-show in 2000. Interesting note, Trump, David Duke, and Jessie Ventura were all Reform Party members. Trump was pretty pro gay rights in his campaigning for them at the time, which is why I really doubt he's going to be anything bad for the LGBT community should he somehow get elected. then there was... "So the Reform Party now includes a Klansman, Mr. Duke, a neo-Nazi, Mr. Buchanan, and a communist, Ms. Fulani. This is not company I wish to keep." - Donald DRUMPF, 2000 Ron Paul was right to avoid this party, however hard Perot tried to draft him in to it.

I would say the normal soldiers were patriots. Keep in mind a lot of the message from the politicians in the south was twisted and warped. The normal soldiers more or less thought the North was trying to take them over, change their every day lives, etc. Why WOULDN'T you fight to preserve your generation upon generations of history? Remember that the common soldier was not a slave owner.
So yeah, I think the soldiers were patriots. However do I think the politicians who led the succession were? Absolutely not. They were traitors, and immoral people if you ask me, who made hundreds of thousands of Americans die to try and preserve something that was obvious to the rest of the world, was going away.
That's not to say everyone in the North was a saint though, because racism even till this day, can sometimes be more brutal in the north than the south.
It's funny, this is almost the spiel I give about the Wehrmacht Heer and late war, Ostfront based SS soldiers.
