It's pretty basic, honestly. You just manage your country, deal with other countries, and annex neutral territories. You can also start research projects, but they have to advance at a reasonable rate.
Are there any concrete rules or mechanics I should be aware of?
No attacking AFK people, no unreasonable expansion (if you're going to annex Alaska, it will take way longer than annexing Belgium; the more powerful the research, the longer it will take, etc.), you have to research in steps (researching muskets before you can research rifles), no godmodding.
And I take it the GM's moderate all that? Set me up as Germany.

I'd rather my guns be made by a woman, and no I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean that they should be the ones building our weapons and running the stores back home, than the teenagers and old people.
How catastrophic to a family would it be for both parents to be killed and all that's left is the children who can't fend for themselves? You'll probably say "well send them to their uncle's place!" Well guess what? they're still out there fighting while their kids are also stuck on their own waiting for him to come home.
That's what we have orphanages for!
