not that I'm aware of. Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner, and Return to Ostagar make sense to install right away so you can access the content when it's progressed to naturally.

Yes and if you don't go into a specific building you completely miss her and then she's gone for good.
Just search around Lothering when you get there, don't think about leaving until you have picked up one of the two party members you can get there.
The game pretty much tells you to go there though... and towards Sten.
Are there actually people who missed her on accident?
"Hey, let me check down this road before I explore the village..."

Yeah, because I was used to playing games where exploring and finding things was a good practice.
Wouldn't it make more sense to check the village first then, since hubs like that are always where quests are handed out for you to do when you explore the surrounding area?

What do you mean lockpick spell mod? Like a PC mod?
Yeah. I mean, I did it sometimes for a few dungeons before the mod, but it was kind of annoying missing some chests.

Well enough. You're going to have to start investing in str or dex when you get to that point because while your damage calculation is based off your magic skill, your hit chance isn't. I don't know if they did that to try and nerf the insane dps tank you can become or if it was sloppy coding that nobody realized, but it's not that bad once you can actually start hitting things.

Being a rogue in DA:O is the best idea for a new player, unless you're given tips and guided along at the beginning of the game, you'll miss a few things that will leave you unable to complete the game unless you're a rogue.

Doesn't take long, just do the elf people forrest quests first to find the specialization. Mage is fun as hell. Polly not, but I'm biased. All my warrior builds were just tanks with large health pools to feed my blood mages.
