The Flood / Interested in getting a new pocket knife.
« on: August 10, 2016, 02:05:13 AM »
Used to have one that I picked up from an auto shop for $15 but it was stolen while I was doing laundry about a year ago when I was still in a not so great living situation. I really miss just how useful it was to always have it on me even though I initially purchased it for self defense (more like self reassurance). My multitool has a knife but it's frankly quite shitty and I don't always keep it on me anyway since it's kinda bulky.

So yeah. I'm on a budget, so cheap but good quality folding knives are what I'm after, preferably with a side clip.
There's a number of you who like knives so I figured I'd ask for suggestions.

Gaming / PSA: 12 months of XBL for $37.99
« on: August 02, 2016, 09:45:12 PM »
12 month codes are on sale for $39.99 and you can get an additional 2 bucks off with a 5% discount by registering an account on their website and liking their facebook page. The prices like to jump up and down a lot but the current price is the lowest I've seen them go on it. Links are below.

If you run into any issues they're super responsive and will get back to you in less than an hour. Only took them about 10 minutes to respond to me when I had a question. Overall I'm actually pretty impressed at how well this turned out.

The Flood / Obnoxious people that always try to talk to you
« on: August 01, 2016, 07:02:02 PM »
Got any?

There's this one slightly autistic kid that's always trying to talk to me and I hate it because he never gets my (sometimes strong) hints that I don't want to talk and I don't want to be a dick. I feel bad because he's a nice guy but he never understands anything I say and it's so fucking awkward.

Also, people who are incapable of anything beyond small talk.
Fuck those people.

The Flood / Been going to the gym a bunch, got some questions
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:28:32 AM »
I signed up for a self guided fitness class, so I've been pounding it out at the campus fitness center for maybe a month and a half now. Now that I have the ability to actually do something, I decided to stop being a slouchy stick figure and work on actually having some form of mass. It's going well but I've faced a few issues.

1. I have small wrists and I sprained one of them about 2 and a half weeks ago. It's mostly healed and I've continued working out with a splint, but it's made things difficult. The rest of my arms can handle a lot more weight and it's slowing me down. I can't really do anything that requires bending my wrists which is incredibly frustrating. I often worry that the same will happen to the other wrist if I'm not careful.

Someone suggested I use sports wraps on my wrists and someone else said to avoid them and that I instead need to work on strengthening the tendons. idk

2. I have a tight budget when it comes to food. I'm still really poor. It's also kind of hard when I'm on campus all day. I've tried just stuffing more PB&J sandwiches in my diet and sometimes protein bars but considering I'm a really lean person that's used to not eating a bunch, it's hard. I'm not sure how to increase my calorie intake in a cheap but healthy way that I won't just completely fall flat on.

3. A lot of the stuff I've been doing has actually been helping my back a ton (I have a scoliosis condition, so my spine is slightly fucked up and it causes chronic pain) in that I've got less pain and I've been standing taller/straighter, but I'm also noticing that despite my best efforts, I'm still unbalanced. The sprained wrist didn't help. One side of my body performs better than the other side, and while the difference is minor, it still gets to me. I don't know how to work on balancing that.

So yeah people who go to the gym, help me out pls

The Flood / If your brain gets put into another body
« on: March 08, 2016, 02:58:52 AM »
You get a completely new body, maybe a different name too. Everything about you is completely different except for your consciousness. Vision, taste buds, skin/hair type, everything.

Are you still the same person?

Alternate question:
Is the family you were related to before still your family if you have entirely new DNA? Are you now family to the people your new body is related to?

Alternate question 2:
Is your body without its consciousness a enough to be considered a person?

Got a school email?

Get Microsoft Office for free on up to 5 devices.

Most colleges should have this. Also, you get 1TB of storage along with it.
Not a bad deal if you ask me.

You guys love the topic, so I figured I'd drop it off here.

Quote
Imagine being a forty-six-year-old woman pregnant with her third child, whose amniocentesis follow-up shows that half her cells carry male chromosomes. Or a seventy-year-old father of three who learns during a hernia repair that he has a uterus. A recent news feature in Nature mentioned these cases as it elaborated on the spectrum of sex biology. People can be sexed in a non-straightforward way and not even be aware of it; in fact, most probably aren’t. As many as 1 person in 100 has some form of “DSD,” a difference/disorder of sex development.

The simple scenario many of us learned in school is that two X chromosomes make someone female, and an X and a Y chromosome make someone male. These are simplistic ways of thinking about what is scientifically very complex. Anatomy, hormones, cells, and chromosomes (not to mention personal identity convictions) are actually not usually aligned with one binary classification.

The Nature feature collects research that has changed the way biologists understand sex. New technologies in DNA sequencing and cell biology are revealing that chromosomal sex is a process, not an assignation.

As quoted in the article, Eric Vilain, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Gender-Based Biology at UCLA, explains that sex determination is a contest between two opposing networks of gene activity. Changes in the activity or amounts of molecules in the networks can sway the embryo towards or away from the sex seemingly spelled out by the chromosomes. “It has been, in a sense, a philosophical change in our way of looking at sex; that it’s a balance.”

What’s more, studies in mice are showing that the balance of sex manifestation can be shifted even after birth; in fact, it is something actively maintained during the mouse’s whole life.

According to the Nature feature, true intersex disorders, such as those from divergent genes or the inability of cellular receptors to respond to hormones, yield conflicting chromosomal and anatomical sex. But these are rare, about 1 in 4,500. For the 1/100 figure, they used a more inclusive definition of DSDs. More than 25 genes that affect sex development have now been identified, and they have a wide range of variations that affect people in subtle ways. Many differences aren’t even noticed until incidental medical encounters, such as in the opening scenarios (the first was probably caused by twin embryos fusing in the woman’s mother’s womb; the second by a hormonal disorder).

Furthermore, scientists now understand that everyone’s body is made up of a patchwork of genetically distinct cells, some of which may have a different sex than the rest. This “mosaicism” can have effects ranging from undetectable to extraordinary, such as “identical” twins of different sexes. An extremely common instance of mosaicism comes from cells passing over the placental barrier during pregnancy. Men often carry female cells from their mothers, and women carry male cells from their sons. Research has shown that these cells remain present for decades, but what effects they have on disease and behavior is an essentially unstudied question.

This is an uneasy way to think about bodies in a social world where sex is still defined in binary terms. Legal frameworks rely on being able to classify someone as male or female, and social status is often determined by the sex on a birth certificate. Parents and doctors of intersex infants face thorny ethical questions about potential surgeries, therapies, and how to raise the child. The implications of better understanding and socially recognizing DSDs are huge.

As our understanding of biology continues to advance, our social, legal, and medical systems will have to evolve as well. Check out the Nature feature for a discussion of these problems, as well as more interesting research into the biology of sex.

Serious / When someone close to you destroys their life/reputation...
« on: February 26, 2016, 05:24:33 AM »
...how do you even handle that kind of situation?

I'm talking about a situation where someone who I considered an older brother has done so many fucked up things (both legal and illegal), yet I never experienced any of the situation firsthand. I don't know what to say or think and it all seemed to happen right after I left. The person in question is a ex marine with PTSD and a known temper problem, but was also someone who made sure I would have a roof over my head (couches, usually) back when I was dealing with homelessness. I genuinely looked up to the guy. This was someone who was barely scraping by, but was still doing so much to help people in the community despite that.

But now that I've left to go back up north to return to college, things went downhill...fast. More and more people keep coming forward about things he's done to them. Everything from screaming at disabled people, assault, fraud, illegal withholding of payments, money theft, and a whole lot of lawsuits. One of the organizations he worked for has released a public statement condemning him and social media posts about the things he's done has gone viral within the community.

I'm at a loss.
I don't know how to react.

The Flood / AMA I had a seizure today
« on: February 18, 2016, 12:06:51 AM »
I was at the doctor's getting some tests done and the woman who was taking my blood was this incompetent little bitch (obviously someone who was in training) who couldn't even find my vein even though it was visible and her supervisor had to show her where.

Then next thing I know I start blacking out when she's drawing the blood, and when I regain consciousness there's like 5 nurses surrounding me, someone putting an oxygen mask on my face, and they informed me that I had a seizure while I was unconscious.

So yeah, that happened.
My arm still hurts around the injection site.
