Don't bother with going back to WO. Just make sure you do all the low level quests, follow the Keira Metz subplot, find the Griffin school gear and don't go to Oxenfurt or Novigrad until you've levelled up to at least lv 10 in the rural areas.
His problem is that he has the starting gear still, which he should've ditched a while ago. He needs to go back to WO to get better gear so he doesn't get arse raped in Velen.
Tbh I managed fine with the default torso amour up until I got the griffin armour, the more he explores the more he'll find. And as long as he never tries buying his armour and weapons he'll be fine, the trick is to get everything crafted-the dwarf at crow's perch is great for armour.
For weapons, there's one in a village somewhere that's not half bad too. I only ever bought ingredients for my armours and weapons, better that way.
I know how to play the game. He should explore WO to get better weapon and armour diagrams. It'll help him not suck complete dick in Velen.

I was told this game was going to be leagues above DA: Inquisition, and so far it's about as enjoyable as Fable III is.

I did everything in White Orchard, and crafted better weapons and armour. I think I was level 5 by the time I even got to Velen.
Yeah I kinda suspected so. Back to White Orchard then.
Yeah. Make sure you do the Witcher contracts and the other random side quests on the notice boards. Explore the undiscovered locations on the map.
The better gear is almost always a craftable item, so make sure to go to peddlers and the blacksmiths to see if they have blueprints for gear.
The Viper School Witcher sword is the best silver sword you can get from White Orchard, but it's only craftable from a blueprint you get from a side quest.
I've completed basically every quest though, and I've only just scraped into lvl 3. I'm guessing the undiscovered locations are quests too?
Some are caches that can have armour or weapons or blueprints, bandit camps and places of power. Some are corpser nests that need blowing up. I just checked an old save. I just eeked into level 4 by the time I was at Velen.

It might be a bit odd but at least on my computer shadows are one of the biggest FPS killers in games, so if I turn them off I can play it with better graphics (In general) and framerates. I can kind of understand why they decided to tone them down/remove a lot of them even if it does look a bit weird. It's one of many odd decisions in the console port. The shadow draw distance is set to low. I know the consoles are underpowered, but fucking hell. They could push medium draw distance at the very least, with low shadow quality. There are normal shadows in the up close areas though aren't there? Yes
