It was a few times. You're exaggerating quite a bit. Nearly every Halo games have had you press a button to advance, yet in Halo 4 it's treated as though it's a brand new concept. Literally the only difference is that in H4 you actually see Chief physically interact with whatever it is. The pacing of the game is fairly consistent too. Every thread in Gaming is secretly a Halo thread.

Who's saying they had amazing storytelling?
Halo 2 was good, minus he shit pacing and ending. ODST is the best one Bungie did, and that was by a small team.
Halo 4's ending was fine. It's only shit if you ignore one of the main story elements in Halo 4.
And the gameplay isn't even bad, like, at all. It's very well polished, and the most solid gameplay in the series so far at its core.
There's obviously issues with it like flinch, as there is issues with every game ever, but that's it.
You must have never played a truly bad game with gameplay that's actually bad.
