They're obsolete in the sense as the 980s will no longer be the best GPUs offered by Nvidia because they aren't fully compatible with Dx12.
except the 980 will still be one of nvidia's top cards, alongside the titan x, until they release their new fully compatible with dx12 line, which won't be far away.
again, dx12 won't suddenly be the only api. dx11 will still be what a lot of games are using for a while
