I've never played a Zelda game before, but I'm considering getting a WiiU for this.
I would stave off if you don't like other Nintendo games. I expect the game to be good because it is Nintendo but if you would only get this one game I don't think the system is for you.

They are most likely developing an entirely new engine, and are also developing it for the current generation of consoles. That is going to take some time. Everyone knows the engine used in the other Fallout games was becoming dated, so they are no doubt spending a couple years developing a brand new one, then after it is finished, they can begin work on the actual game.
I highly doubt they're creating a brand new engine. Heavily modifying it is more likely.
