The Flood / Re: solve my riddle
« on: October 20, 2015, 12:11:36 AM »
This is actually a maths question in disguise, let's name the two sentences

The sentence below is false = b

The sentence above is true = a

a implies b
b implies not a
therefore
a implies not a
a clear contradiction, since you never rigorously defined what a sentence is.

I think that only makes the inevitable human conquest of space all the more impressive. To think that we'll have to be able to be able to engineer a ship and society that could collectively survive a mission spanning centuries, it's somthing to strive for.
Inevitable. . .

Hardly, we're struggling fam. If some people were to have their way we'd stay here and stagnate or even just kill ourselves.
Scientific knowledge and engineering capabilities are like entropy, their increase is inevitable and unavoidable. Even if we don't personally live to see significant space advancements, people aren't going to give up on it without being completely lobotomized. Have some faith.
After seeing some people's attitudes about such an endeavour it's hard not to totally give in.
Fuck pessimism, that attitude has never achieved anything. I'm alive and you're alive and other people who have hope are alive, we'll make it eventually we just need time.

Well, actually, the farther we get along, the bigger the hurdles are going to get. There's only so far you can go before your scientific progress begins to stagnate because the hurdles get so much more massive in scale.

I'd actually say, that due to entropy, we'll reach a point were our technology can go no further due to the constricting limits of our universal laws. The successful climb up a never ending hill won't last forever.
I believe we'll just have to face those hurdles as they come, if we find something that absolutely cannot be done then we'll simply redefine the question we were asking and build an alternative.

Right now the growth of technology isn't slowing down, and the more it disseminates amongst people the more we'll be able to make use of what we already have; I figure that's the most important part of it all, hundreds of millions of tiny little improvements that add up to conquering space.

Nah, trump all the way.

Ho-...Wh-...

Why?
I'll remind you in advance that I'm not American or in America:

The man's got a spine and the balls to go with it; every other candidate comes across as either fake or weak or Carson, I don't believe that they themselves believe in what they're pushing for, and their dependence on campaign donors and lack of strong character makes me doubtful they could even achieve what they want. But Trump strikes me as a man that's above that, he made his fortune with his own skills and hard work, and is too rich to bribe or be corrupted. I watched some of his campaign speeches and they sound really genuine, he's telling the truth when he says he wants to fix your country, and he has more credentials to prove his ability to do so than any other candidate.

I cannot stress enough how much I value competence and determination, In my experience I think that the biggest problem with most people is that they lack direction and purpose and ambition, but Trump has all of those, he's the kind of man I can look to and say "dammit I'm going to try and be more like him, that's a man worth my respect", I can't say that about any other politician on earth.

Quote
Talk to Meta. He'll explain why outsourcing is good and how immigrants are necessary.
Now I haven't had a chance to do this but in all honesty, I HATE having my country being sold out and made dependent on china or any other foreign country. I want my country and my people to be capable of looking after themselves, and I see the same sentiments in trump.

I found a 5gb torrent a while back and probably wont finish this until after university. I have a bunch of other books lying around in folders as well. My real life collection is literally ASOIAF + a book on marine ecology.
holy shit nerd
Tell me this doesn't sound like the coolest shit that you can't comprehend
Where'd you get it?
And can I have it?
I'm not sure what the sep7agon policy is on piracy but
Spoiler
if you search math book into thepiratebay there should be a 9 or so gb torrent IN ALL CAPS; half of the files are repeats of the other half so it's only 5gb

I'd like to add that it's not the protest that has any power, but the threat of violence if the the government refuses to co-operate in any way. Of course nobody's going to take protestors seriously if they happily comply with the people they're portesting against, and actively try to disarm themselves.

as if respecting other people and their boundaries and generally not being a total cunt to everyone you meet just because you can is some sort of new revolution that them gol-dern lefties have brought upon the world to wreak havoc. I'm not really gonna touch on that too much because the stupidity in that sentence should be pretty damn obvious (hint hint: it's always been a thing to generally not be a cunt and the fact that we've started extending that thing to more and more people by making words like "nigger", "faggot", "trannie", and so on unacceptable only shows a wider range of acceptance, not fucking censorship and the elimination of free speech),
You know the entire tone of your post makes it seem like you're quite fine with being a total cunt to people you disagree with, what with the constant insults and holier than thou attitude you've got going on; so already I don't see much point in having a serious discussion.

But I will say this; I can tolerate a very specific kind of censorship, consider a classroom that teaches say, mathematics; of all the possible things that could be discussed, everything but maths is censored, and then of every possible math topic that could be discussed, everything but the specific skills being taught is censored, and even then the wider implications of those ideas are censored to focus on simply learning what's in the curriculum. THAT is the only acceptable form of censorship because that is the only kind that has clear and tangible benefits to everyone involved, and I would argue that it is impossible to teach someone something without censoring information to some degree. If you want to get technical then this really is just creating context, but I digress.

Now without even discussing how censoring words only gives them more power and draws people to them, I want to make it very clear that you fundamentally misunderstand the concept of free speech. It is entirely about being able to say things that are offensive, things that some people would rather be hidden away and never mentioned, about being able to say something that everyone around you, maybe even the entire world, disagrees with. It is almost heartbreakingly said that you think free speech means "you are allowed to say the words that we have approved of and nothing else".
You've misunderstood my point if that's what you think I think free speech means.

Of course you're allowed to say anything you'd like, so long as there is no actual physical consequence associated with it. However, others are perfectly allowed to call you out on what you're saying, and should rightfully do so if it's against what is considered socially acceptable.

The KKK and Westboro Baptist church both exist in today's society and I fully support their right to without supporting the groups themselves - but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't take a metaphorical shit all over one if they tried picketing outside my house.
Ah, I it seems I did misunderstand your point, glad we're in agreement then.

Serious / Re: SQS: Once lost, can trust ever be fully regained?
« on: October 18, 2015, 02:43:32 AM »
The only way I would be able to trust someone again after loosing that trust is if they had become such a significantly different person over the course of a few years that they are effectively a different person, and even then I'd still feel apprehensive about it. So I'd say no, if you're going to interact with people you should know what's at risk, if you fail to live up to that trust either through incompetence or deliberate actions, that's on you and you just have to live with it.

Well when you describe someone as white it's not just their colour that matters it's also their racial heritage.
what does this even mean
only Europeans and Americans are white
Any other folk may be white in regards to their skin tone but they are not white by race
bruh aint that what race is-a classification of people based on physical phenotypes?

for heritage you use ethnicity
By that logic I'm Asian thanks to my black hair and brown eyes, despite being fully British/Irish. It's not the phenotypes that matter, but where they come from.
all im saying bro is why even use the term "white" when you're not gonna use it to refer to all people with light skin and an angular facial structure
I'm not fond of almost everyone in the western world being lumped under a label that fails to convey any useful information anyway, all the different cultures and ethnicities that are considered white are fairly distinct so it makes more sense to just name them directly; but as of right now white means western/northern European ancestry and nothing else.
