A Death Star was a moon-sized Imperial military battlestation armed with a planet-destroying superlaser.

The Death Stars, whose concept had been explored even before the Clone Wars, were the first in a long series of superweapons developed to execute the Tarkin Doctrine. The Death Star was designed to allow Emperor Palpatine to more directly control the Galactic Empire through fear. In most instances, a Death Star was to be commanded by a Moff.

One Death Star was completely built by the Empire, with a second and third one never reaching full completion, as well as a prototype being in existence. In addition, a scaled-down version, the Tarkin, and a Hutt knockoff, the Darksaber, would be created by the Empire and Durga the Hutt, respectively.

Both Death Stars were destroyed by the Rebel Alliance shortly after they became operational. The first Death Star was destroyed by Luke Skywalker, with the help of Han Solo, and the second Death Star was destroyed by Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrissian. Prior to the second Death Star being built, the Galactic Empire tested out a planetary superlaser for protecting its installations on the planet of Dubrillion. At some point after the second's destruction, the Rebel Alliance also attacked and destroyed a third Death Star. Following their destruction, other planet-devastating superweapons followed, including the Galaxy Gun, the Darksaber, the Sun Crusher, and the World Devastators.

The first Death Star fires its superlaser.

The Death Stars, the Galactic Empire's ultimate terror weapons, were battle stations several hundred kilometers in diameter and mounting a directed energy superlaser capable of completely destroying a planet with a single shot along with 15000 lasers, ion, turbolasers batteries, and heavy turbolasers in all plus an additional 768 tractor beam emplacements. However, the first Death Star's defenses were not tight enough to stop starfighters from penetrating them.

The first Death Star was 120 kilometers in diameter,[1][2] while the second Death Star was 160 kilometers in diameter.[3] Much of its interior space was devoted to systems required to maintain its massive superlaser and power plant. At the heart of each Death Star was a gigantic hypermatter reactor, which possessed an output equal to that of several main-sequence stars. Within this chamber burned a reaction of prodigious proportions, fed by stellar fuel bottles lining its periphery.

Splitting the station into two equal hemispheres was a huge equatorial trench approximately 503 kilometers in length for the first Death Star and 2,827 kilometers for the second Death Star. This area of the station housed most of the major landing bays, drive thrusters, sensor arrays and tractor beam systems. Halfway between the equator and each pole were two supplementary trenches. The Death Star was divided into 24 zones, 12 per hemisphere, each controlled by a "bridge". To further organize the immense amount of activity aboard, there were specific "sectors" denoting function. These included the General, Command, Military, Security, Service, and Technical sectors.
Death Star Drydock

Since service onboard the Death Star was a long-term affair, the station maintained a number of civilian amenities to make the time aboard a deep space station more comfortable. Parks, shopping centers, recreation areas, and taverns such as the Hard Heart Cantina could be found in the general sectors of the station.[4]

Facilitating the Death Star's realspace propulsion were a network of powerful ion engines that transformed reactor power into needed thrust. In order for the Death Star to be a deadly threat, it needed to be mobile. Using linked banks of 123 hyperdrive field generators tied into a single navigational matrix, the Death Star could travel across the Galaxy at superluminal velocities. The incredible energies harnessed by the station combined with its great mass gave the Death Star magnetic and artificial gravitational fields equal to those found on orbital bodies many times greater in size.

The Death Star's superlaser derived power directly from the hypermatter reactor. Its faceted amplification crystal combined the destructive power of eight separate tributary beams into one single blast with the intensity of a stellar core. After firing a blast, though, the Imperial engineers had to recharge the reactor, which took at least 24 standard hours. Though the energy output of this blast could be scaled to fire at smaller targets such as capital ships, as was the case during the Rebel assault on the second Death Star, the two major instances in which the superlaser was fired were at full power at planetary bodies.

The Death Star's interior followed two orientations. Those areas closest to the surface were built with concentric decks with gravity oriented towards the Death Star's core. Past this shell of surface "sprawls", the Death Star's interior had stacked decks with gravity pointing toward the station's southern pole.

The Ultimate Weapon

The plans for the Ultimate Weapon, which would become the Death Star, given to Count Dooku.

The Death Star was born in the mind of Raith Sienar, who had conceived of it as an Expeditionary Battle Planetoid, although he believed the design was impractical. He shared his idea with his friend Wilhuff Tarkin, who presented it to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, having been impressed enough about the design to champion it in spite of Sienar's doubts about its practicality. Palpatine then turned Sienar's idea to Bevel Lemelisk and ordered him to pursue the needed advances in hypermatter science with the Geonosian hives led by Poggle the Lesser, to which he succeeded in doing so with the Twi'lek scientist Tol Sivron, although the plans ended up falling into enemy hands when the Geonosians joined the Separatists.[5] In actuality, Palpatine, as Sith Lord Darth Sidious, arranged for the designs to be supplied to the Separatists, led by his apprentice, Separatist leader Count Dooku, with Lemelisk being unaware of this. Dooku then had Geonosian Industries accomplish further technical modifications to the original plans.

During the Battle of Geonosis, Archduke Poggle the Lesser, leader of the Geonosians, returned the top-secret designs to Count Dooku to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Jedi. Dooku took the designs back to Coruscant and gave them to Darth Sidious, his dark master.[6] The Separatists then continued to build their superweapon in the Geonosis system.[7]

The 501st Legion was sent to Mygeeto during the Clone Wars to collect an ancient Mygeetan crystal which was an experimental power source that the Chancellor required for a top-secret tributary laser-stream project codenamed "Hammertong," which would be used on the first Death Star.

Darth Sidious later ordered the Death Star's construction after the Galactic Empire was formed, in order to secure his new-formed absolute power. Wilhuff Tarkin was appointed to mastermind the secret development project, though other stories have it that Raith Sienar was the superweapon's creator. Tarkin's creative work and thought resulted in the realization of the Death Star as the Empire's ultimate weapon.

After the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge, an assault was led on the planet Kashyyyk to enslave the native Wookiees for the Death Star's construction. Various prison planets were also known to have their captives unwittingly construct various sections of the station. The Empire also had Mrlssi scientists working on some of the technology that would go into the station.[8]
Moff Tarkin

Nevertheless, the project nearly ended before it began. Because much of the technology of the Death Star was impressive, actually building it proved to be more difficult than anyone imagined. Efforts were not helped by repeated (and often unsuccessful) attempts to sabotage construction. In addition, spies belonging to Gentis were also planted on the development team in charge of the Death Star since a few weeks after the creation of a New Order, which factored into his military coup against Palpatine a few months afterwards.
Implementation

"The cost of maintaining order is high - some would say too high - but to preserve peace and stability, difficult choices must be made. Yes, the destruction of Alderaan was regrettable, but so was the destruction of the Death Stars. Are the death of millions of Alderaanians - who conspired to overthrow the government - more tragic than the deaths of the millions of Imperial soldiers who laid down their lives to defend our way of life? I think not."
    ―Imperial High Inquisitor Antinnis Tremayne[src]

Of particular concern was the technology required to create the massive superlaser, the heart of the weapon, which was derived from the long-running Hammertong Project. The Superlaser cannon was initially going to be placed in the equator, but for reasons unspecified was later moved to the dorsal hemisphere. In addition, the tributary lasers required fine-tuning and perfect alignment during development, otherwise it would result in the central beam misfocusing and dissipate in a flurry of backscatter that ended up being far more dangerous to the superlaser housing than to any target. As the superlaser at that time required a significant amount of power generation to maintain, and it was powered primarily by the station's hypermatter reactor, it also had to disable all other functions of the ship, including shields and life support, were knocked offline when it was in use. Lastly, the firing process also generated magnetic flux and gravitational flux, which also needed to be dissipated in fear of either misaligning the crystals or, in the worst case scenario, tear the station apart.[5] To this end, Tarkin brought together some of the most brilliant minds of the Galaxy, including Tol Sivron, Qwi Xux, and Bevel Lemelisk, and built a proof-of-concept model at the Maw Installation. This model would eventually become known as the Death Star prototype. These scientists also found and corrected several flaws in the Geonosian blueprints, which had been used in that phase of construction. Renowned physicist Rorax Falken worked with the Empire at some point during the construction of the Death Star, though he was not aware that his ideas and knowledge were being used for a battlestation.[8] During this time, the Death Star construction also frequently relocated, from Geonosis to Seswenna to Patriim to Horuz, the latter location being the location when the battle station was starting to become a reality.[5]

With the concept completed and the plans finalized, Lemelisk took the plans to Despayre, where construction would finally be completed after twenty years of hard work and the death of many individuals. In celebration, the Death Star turned its massive weapon on Despayre itself, completely destroying it.[9] After the completion of the first Death Star, codenamed the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, Lemelisk and the IDMR have explored two potential concepts for the Death Star's future: Either having various factory worlds switch their output to the production of assembly-line duplicates of the current DS-1 model, or have the Empire build an even larger and more dangerous Death Star reaching 160 km in diameter.[10] The Empire would ultimately opt with the latter concept.

During its construction, the Death Star was home to countless prisoners of the Empire, from political opponents to pirate gangs to Rebel saboteurs. These prisoners managed to break out and riot in the Death Star, but were put down by the 501st Legion. However, some managed to escape with a partial set of the plans and some Imperial data.[11]
DestructionOfAlderaan-ANH

The first Death Star's superlaser hits Alderaan.

Galen Marek traveled to the Death Star to free Bail Prestor Organa, Rahm Kota, and rest of the founders of the Rebel Alliance including Mon Mothma. He fought Darth Vader in the corridor leading to Sidious' Observation Chamber. He severely injured the Sith Lord and Palpatine urged Galen to kill Vader. Galen instead attacked Sidious himself. The pair dueled viciously with the force and lightsaber combat. Galen sacrificed his life in an explosion which allowed the Rebels to escape. He was honored by the Alliance when his family crest was used as their symbol.

Just after construction was completed, the other set of Death Star plans was discovered by Rebel spies on a secret signal interceptions asteroid outpost, AX-235; the Rebellion moved on and in the borders of Operation Skyhook, a copy of the plans was stolen by Kyle Katarn from Danuta and finally reached Leia Organa. Later, while attempting to recruit Obi-Wan Kenobi to the rebel cause, Leia's vessel,Tantive IV was attacked by the Star Destroyer Devastator above Tatooine. Leia, before being captured, transmitted the plans in R2-D2 and sent them to Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. Upon arriving at Alderaan, which had been destroyed by the Death Star, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Kenobi, and Chewbacca mistook the station for a small moon while following a lone TIE/LN starfighter.

The quartet was soon captured, but after escaping from the Death Star with Leia, the plans to the station were transported by Princess Leia with their help to Rebel leaders on Yavin IV. Soon after, the Death Star arrived to destroy the rebel base, having located it via a transmitter placed on the Millennium Falcon. After softening the defenses by destroying some of the Deflection Towers,[12] Luke Skywalker piloted a T-65 X-wing starfighter through a minor trench on the surface of the Death Star, then Vader followed him in, and during his evasion of Darth Vader, he heard Obi-Wan call to him, telling him to use the Force, not his targeting computer. Luke switched off his computer, to the concern of the Rebels in the base, then fired two proton torpedoes into the "reactor core". This caused a chain reaction that destroyed the battle station just before it could fire on the Rebel base.[13] Ironically, shortly before Luke's destruction of the Death Star, Palpatine had ordered for the creation of a second Death Star.[5]
DeathStarII-BotF

The incomplete Death Star II.

Nearly four years later, Bothan spies stole the plans of the second Death Star, unaware that their theft was orchestrated by Emperor Palpatine, having agreed to a suggestion personally made to him by Black Sun leader Prince Xizor. General Crix Madine and Admiral Gial Ackbar devised a plan for the destruction of the new Death Star. Han Solo led a team to the forest moon of Endor to destroy the shield generator there. The plan called for a group of fighters and the Millennium Falcon piloted by Lando Calrissian to attack the Death Star upon destruction of the shield generator. The fighters flew into the center of the station through a narrow maze of pipes to destroy the reactor directly and rushed out in just enough time to escape the ensuing explosion before the station could carry out its final order: destroying the Sanctuary Moon of Endor. A few moments prior to its destruction, an evacuation order for all non-essential personnel was also called.[14]

At some point after the Battle of Endor, a third Death Star was being constructed in orbit around the forest moon of Endor which was escorted by a fleet of Imperial-class Star Destroyers but was destroyed by the New Republic while still undergoing construction. Its weakness was a hole similar to the thermal exhaust port of the first Death Star.

Years later, when Han Solo first encountered the Yuuzhan Vong and their colossal worldships, he would comment: "Why isn't there a Death Star lying around when you need one?"
Additional information

Around the same time the Geonosians were designing their Ultimate Weapon, Raith Sienar was designing a battlestation (apparently without a superlaser) of similar size and prestige. The best elements of both were apparently merged together with final detail work taking place in the secret Maw Cluster near Kessel. This laboratory completed a scaled-down prototype that was later destroyed by the New Republic.
Additional Defenses
DSTurbolasers

Two of thousands of turbolasers on the first Death Star

Both Death Stars were defended by hundreds of shield projectors (including Deflection towers), and thousands of turbolasers, ion cannons and laser cannons. The first one contained a complement of seven to nine thousand TIE fighters, along with tens of thousands of support craft, bombers, and gunships. Massive docking bays provided several Star Destroyers with dry docks, and more than a million Imperial personnel were on board both battle stations.
Design flaws

One drawback of the original design was the power systems. Twenty-four hours were required to fully charge the laser. However, even low power shots were capable of massive destruction on a planetary scale. The second Death Star had redesigned systems and was capable of firing the superlaser once every three minutes. It also had improved targeting computers, allowing it to fire the weapon accurately at capital ships.

There were small gaps in the shields of the first Death Star; the Empire believed that this was harmless since only small ships could wiggle through the gaps. The shields of the second Death Star would have had no such gaps.

The second Death Star also corrected several other flaws in the original design. The two-meter exhaust vent that doomed the first station was replaced with millions of millimeter wide tubes, each designed to seal if excess energy was detected. The second station also boasted far more turbolaser batteries with redesigned targeting systems, allowing them to target starfighters more easily. The greatest concentration of turbolasers was located near the Emperor's throne tower.
Darksaber

Durga the Hutt also built a small version with only the central laser core and a small living quarters, which was destroyed in the asteroid field around Hoth. This was known as the Darksaber, but shoddy construction techniques and substandard components meant that this attempt was an abject failure even before its destruction.
Behind the scenes

According to the Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections fact book, the first Death Star in A New Hope was 160 kilometers in diameter. The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film reproduces a sketch attributed to Ralph McQuarrie which shows 92 miles (148 kilometers). According to the Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy fact book and detailed scaling of the station in Return of the Jedi, the second Death Star was 900 kilometers in diameter. Some Expanded Universe sources state much smaller figures—120 kilometers for the first Death Star and 160 kilometers for the second—however, most of the evidence argues for the larger sizes.

The Dalek Crucible in Doctor Who from series 4 in 2008 is said to be inspired by the Death Star, apart from the 'wings' on the side, the Crucible is very similar, but the eye is covered by a shield whereas on the Death Star it is not.

Several of the Star Wars games are concerned with the Death Star's destruction, or the theft, protection, and transmission of its plans until reaching Tantive IV. Some games also focus on the immediate aftermath, such as Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike.

The Death Star is available as a cheat in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns. It acts like an air cruiser unit, but is much slower. It more than makes up for its speed with excessive hit points, shielding, armor, and the most powerful attack in the game—any object on the map, even trees and rocks disappear after the Death Star fires. It is virtually impossible to destroy it. There is a limit on the number of Death Stars the player can conjure up at any time.

A number of Death Star battle stations appear in sources of uncertain canonicity. The Star Tours theme-park ride includes another battlemoon at Endor, clearly different than the one seen in Return of the Jedi, while the French-language RPG Magazine Casus Belli 99 includes another prototype, named the Nocturnô. The former, however, was officially entered into continuity by Leland Chee, the gatekeeper of the LucasFilm Holocron Continuity Database, with it being named the Death Star III.

The Death Star has also influenced popular culture, a tribute to the Death Star, the "Death Egg" making an appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog series (1992).

Besides its role in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, both in the main campaign and its appearance in the co-op mode for the game (based on Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader), the Death Star also had an appearance in the game's opening and arcade mode, as a disco ball.

In the eleventh issue of Star Wars Adventure Journal, under the Fragments from the Mind's Eye section, the Death star was sold as a discount superweapon at B'hob's Discount Superweapons. Its tagline, "Only Exploded Twice", was a humorous reference to how both the original Death Star and the Death Star II were destroyed.
Mimas
Mimas

That's no space station; it's a moon.

Mimas, the smallest and innermost of seven major moons orbiting the planet Saturn, is notable for a single enormous impact crater called Herschel. The appearance of Mimas and Herschel in pictures taken during the space probe Voyager 1's 1980 flyby of the Saturn system showed a similarity to the first Death Star, with Herschel appearing as the superlaser disc, as remarked upon in the scientific press.[15] This resemblance became one of Mimas's most notable characteristics in astronomy and popular culture.[16]

During the Cassini orbiter's visit to the Saturn system in 2004, the resemblance was noted again in the official press releases[17] and by the scientific press.[18] However, Cassini's more recent images of Mimas do not all resemble a Death Star orbiting Saturn, as the moon is more egg-shaped than the battlestation.[19]
White House petition

In late 2012, a petition was submitted to the White House website urging that the United States government build a real Death Star as an economic stimulus and a means to ensure people got back to work again, and wanted its completion by 2016 at the earliest. The petition gained more than 25,000 signatures, ensuring that an official response be supplied. In early 2013, the proposal was rejected (in a tongue-and-cheek manner), citing that the overall cost of the Death Star's construction would amount to a cost exceeding $852 quadrillion, and would take 833,000 years before it could even be ready for construction due to the rate of steel production. Another reason for the rejection was also because the Government "did not support blowing up planets."[20] As such, the Star Wars Blog, in response to it, created a light-hearted, in-universe reply from the Galactic Empire's Public Relations department where the Empire, with official statements from Admiral Conan Antonio Motti and Governor Wilhuff Tarkin, shrugged off the criticisms by the planet Earth's leaders regarding the design of the battlestation. In addition, in the same source, it also denounced the planet for grossly overestimating the cost of designing the Death Star, as well as commenting the overall lack of production methods of the planet in comparison of the Galactic Empire, even implying that the planet's leaders were cowardly in their decision.[21]

OT Star Wars = Older Star Trek > Newer Star Trek > Prequel Star Wars > dog shit > ST Star Wars
why do you hate new star wars? it's definitely not quite up to par with the original saga, but i wouldn't call it worse than dog shit.

Cause Luke is an actual human being and not the same Shounen Anime protagonist he was in Legends.

You had me until you put Enterprise at the same level as the Voyager slog.

Explain yourself, heathen.

I enjoy both but they have their problems; Enterprise ass blasting all of continuity almost an entire tenth as hard as Discovery and generally doing everything the other series did over again but "first".

Voyager has more issues in the general writing department but it still end up good for the most part. It's certainly better than Spock having an entire species worth of previously unknown Mary Sue half siblings and half naked Uhura dancing.

The ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos is the main mobile suit of the Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS television series. The unit is primarily piloted by Mikazuki Augus.
Contents[show]
Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Gundam Barbatos is one of 72 "Gundam" frames that was produced and used in the Calamity War, roughly 300 years ago.[1][2] After it was recovered, Chryse Guard Security used it as a power reactor.[2] Aside from the fact that its Ahab Reactors were still functional, this was done mainly because Barbatos' cockpit was missing when it was found.[3] A new cockpit similar to the one used by the CGS mobile workers was installed prior to its redeployment by the 3rd Group.[4] Poor maintenance over the centuries since the Calamity War has degraded the Barbatos' armor and full combat potential[2]. This is later rectified by Teiwaz technicians, who not only restored the Barbatos to its original look but also returned it back to a performance close to its original. [5]

Gundam units like the Barbatos are able to achieve a high energy output because they possess two Ahab Reactors.[6][1] However because it is difficult to run them in parallel operation,[6][1] only a total of 72 Gundam frames were ever produced.[6][1] The burden experienced by the pilot is high as a result of the high output and maneuverability; however it's mitigated by the implementation of Inertial Control due to the use of Ahab Particles generated from the reactor when a phase transition occurs inside its vacuum device.[1] The cockpit structure is positioned in front of the reactor to take advantage of this.[1] Among the same frame machines, Barbatos has been adjusted for an emphasis on versatility, it has the potential to adapt to every circumstances by exchanging its equipment.[1] It can also use weapons and armor from defeated enemies to improve its fighting capabilities.
Armaments

    Mace

Maruba Arkay (CGS president) had considered using the Barbatos in battle and so had kept some equipment for it.[7] The Mace is one of them, it is a large physical weapon made from a high hardness, rare alloy that is also used in mobile suit frames.[7][1] As mobile suits use Nanolaminate Armor for protection, such striking weapons are considered to be effective.[1] The centre of the Mace features a pile driver mechanism that fires a 'Needle' (a large spike rod) from the tip when activated, and this is often used for piercing the enemy MS.[7] The Mace's handle is telescopic, and it can be stored on the backpack arm when not in use.[8] Used by the 1st Form up to the 5th Form, it was lost during the atmospheric entry battle with Gundam Kimaris and was left floating in earth's orbit.

    Long Sword

A mobile suit-use sword shaped like a katana, it was created in the factory within Teiwaz's base, Saisei.[1] It is easy to handle due to its light weight, and shows its superiority during localized attacks.[1] The sword's grip is later improved to fit Barbatos' hands better and to help minimize kinetic energy loss when using the weapon.[5] Due to the high strength of the Nanolaminate Armor, the sword's slashes are ineffective, thus, Mikazuki is forced to aim for gaps within the enemy mobile suit's armor with the help of the Alaya-Vijnana System.[9] The long sword primarily functions as a backup melee weapon when the mace or the large special mace is available as Mikazuki finds it hard to use. However, in the battle with Graze Ein, Mikazuki finally mastered the weapon and it is shown to be able to slice through both mobile suit armor and frame in a single attack. The long sword can be stored on the backpack arm when not in use. Used by the 4th Form onwards.

    Gauntlet

Already equipped when Barbatos was discovered on Mars.[1] It is thought to be one of Barbatos' original equipment but it is not a complete certainty.[1] Used only by the 1st Form and 2nd Form, the Gauntlet was lost when it was ejected alongside the rest of the left forearm armor during the battle with Gjallarhorn forces near the Mars' low orbital station.

    Smoothbore Gun

A 300mm caliber gun produced for use mainly in zero gravity environment and space, emphasis was placed on power rather than accuracy.[10][5] The high-speed maneuvers of enemy mobile suit in space further made it difficult for the smoothbore gun to hit them with high accuracy, but this was overcome thanks to the Alaya-Vijnana System.[9] The high-speed bullet fired from the Smoothbore Gun have occasionally shot off the armor pieces of enemy mobile suits or even penetrate their Nanolaminate Armor. The weapon also has a 60mm machine-gun at the bottom.[5] It can be folded up and mounted to the suit's backpack arm when not in use. [10] The unfolded gun can be used while still mounted thanks to the design of the backpack arms. Its magazine holds 12 rounds.[11] Used by the 2nd Form to the 5th Form.

    GR-Es02 Wire Claw

Used only by the 3rd Form, it is a shooting claw weapon mounted on the left forearm that is used for restraining enemy mobile suits as well as for clinging to enemy vessels.[12] It was taken from Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze and replaces the lost Gauntlet.

    GR-H01 9.8m Battle Axe

A close combat weapon used by Graze that the Barbatos obtained temporarily during the battle with Gjallarhorn forces near the Mars' low orbital station.

    Long Range Rifle

A weapon borrowed from the Gundam Gusion Rebake. A modified, long range version of Graze's 120mm rifle, it is created by Teiwaz engineers that are with the Turbines. Thanks to the longer barrel and the added scope, its long-range accuracy has been greatly improved.

    Arm Mortar

A weapon originally designed for the Kutan Type-III, it can also be used by mobile suits.[13] Two mortars can be stored on each of the Barbatos' forearms. When in use, the mortar will flip forward for firing. Once the first mortar is launched, the second mortar slides up. The mortar launcher then flips back and the second mortar is loaded.[8] Although seen in use only by the 5th Form, the arm mortars can also be used by the 5th Form Ground Type or the 6th Form if required.

    170mm Autocannon

Depending on the situation, the four arm mortars can be replaced by a pair of autocannons that uses helical magazines.[13][8] The autocannons' barrels extend when in use.[8] Due to their limited ammunition, they are unsuitable for long range shooting battle, but are highly effective when used in close combat.[7] Used by the 5th Form Ground Type onwards.

    Large Special Mace

A replacement for the original mace after it was lost during the atmospheric entry battle, it has the nickname 'Wrench Mace'.[13] Besides functioning as an excellent striking weapon, the front portion of the wrench mace can open up and clamp onto an enemy unit tightly.[13] A special chainsaw hidden in the bulbous front portion of the mace can then slice apart the enemy unit.[13] Used by the 5th Form Ground Type onwards, and can be stored on the backpack arm when not in use. The mace was destroyed in combat by the Graze Ein during the battle in Edmonton.

Forms

    1st Form

Barbatos was in this form when Maruba Arkay (CGS president) discovered it in Mars' desert 300 years after the Calamity War.[1][3] Since its Ahab Reactors were still in an operational state it was used as the CGS HQ's power source until Mikazuki boarded it.[1] At the time it did not have any shoulder armor.

    2nd Form

CGS was later reformed into Tekkadan, and prior to Tekkadan's departure to Earth, the Barbatos' 1st Form is fitted with the shoulder armor from the captured EB-06 Graze.[14] These shoulder armors have the same white and blue color scheme as the main body as they are painted with the same Nanolaminate Armor.[14]

    3rd Form

After the battle with Gjallarhorn near the low orbital station, the Barbatos 2nd Form is equipped with the Wire Claw captured from Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze to fix the damaged left forearm armor.[14]

    4th Form

Barbatos' original form, it is reproduced by technicians at Teiwaz's base, Saisei, based on ancient materials from the time of the Calamity War that had been recorded in their database.[1] The machine's weight balance is stabilized, and the two reactors' output and operation rate are also improved after extensive maintenance and overhaul.[1][5] While Barbatos's performance is now closer to the original state, it is still not yet at 100%.[5][15]

    5th Form

A new form with added waist boosters, redesigned forearm armor with mortars and chest-mounted reactive armor. Some of the new parts were provided by the Montag Company.[14] The waist boosters serve to increase the suit's mobility and were originally the hip-mounted flight units of Ein's Schwalbe Graze, Tekkadan recovered the parts when they were dislodged from the Schwalbe Graze during an earlier battle. The reactive armor serves as a countermeasure against the Kimaris' hit-and-run attacks with its Gungnir lance.[13]

    5th Form Ground Type

A modified version of the 5th Form for ground combat[13], it was created with the help of Eco Turbine and again used parts provided by the Montag Company. The leg suspension was adjusted to adapt to the earth's gravity and new feet were used. As a result of this, the suit now has a higher center of gravity, leading to faster reaction and thus better mobility under gravity.[13] The added waist thrusters were removed as they were deemed useless for ground combat, and the forearm mortars can be exchanged with autocannons.

    6th Form

A reinforced version of the 5th Form Ground-Type for the final battle.[14] The side skirt armor was replaced with a pair "Tail Boosters", the shoulder armor was replaced with those from the EB-06r Graze Ritter, and additional armor is added to the chest.[7][8] The tail boosters improve the suit's ground mobility, and have reduced fuel consumption.[8] [7] The added chest armor provides the cockpit with better protection from concentrated attacks and can withstand prolonged battle.[15] Although the new armor reduces the suit's mobility, they allow the Barbatos to battle for prolonged periods without any resupply.[13] When required, the shoulder armors can be ejected and used as a decoy.

Equipment

    Alaya-Vijnana System

An organic device system, this old man-machine interface was developed during the Calamity War to maximize the abilities of the mobile suit. Hence, most mobile suits from that era, like the Gundams, are compatible with it. The system has two parts, one part is installed in the mobile suit, and the other part is implanted into the pilot’s spine. With this system, the pilot can connect to the mobile suit's computer and directly process mobile suit data. It also allows the pilot (even uneducated ones) to operate mobile suit for combat without reading the instruction manual, and can make difficult weapons like the Barbatos' Long Sword and the Smoothbore Gun much easier to use.[9] The implant in the pilot also enhances spatial awareness. The drop in technical capabilities after the Calamity War, coupled with the use of an incomplete version of the system in the Outer Sphere areas (such as Mars and Jupiter), lead to the implant surgery having a low success rate and can only be done at a young age to let the implant fuse as the pilot grow. As the Barbatos' original cockpit was missing, it was fitted with the Alaya-Vijnana System interface from a Mobile Worker to allow the system to function. The Barbatos' Alaya-Vijnana System can transmit higher than the usual amount of data to the pilot as its limiter was switched off for Mikazuki's use, thus only he can pilot the Gundam without any problems.

    Backpack Arm

There are two backpack arms on the Barbatos' backpack, one on each side of the back thruster. The backpack arms can mount weapons, and when their hidden jointed arms are deployed, some weapons, such as the Smoothbore Gun, can be used while still mounted. [5]

    JEE-M103 Kutan Type-III

A long distance transport craft/booster used for transporting containers and mobile suit. It can travel at extremely high speeds and thus traverse great distances in just a short amount of time. It was used by Mikazuki and Nadi to catch up to the Isaribi because they stayed behind at Saisei to help with the Barbatos' overhaul.[16]

    Chest Reactive Armour

Additional armor mounted on the chest, it is used by Barbatos 5th form. The chest reactive armor was created by Tekkadan Mechanic, Nadi, as a countermeasure against the Kimaris' hit and run attacks with its Gungnir lance. It can endure a hit from the Gungnir and will be purged immediately after, thus repelling the attack.[13] Barbatos can then use the chance to hold onto the lance and prevent further attacks.

Operational History

The Gundam Barbatos is the 8th of the 72 Gundam Frames created by Gjallarhorn near the end of the Calamity War to counter the threat of the powerful mobile armors such as Hashmal. It was later discovered by Maruba Arkay in the Mars desert and was recovered to serve as a power reactor for Chryse Guard Security's base. The machine was taken out of the base by Mikazuki Augus during Gjallarhorn's assault. CGS, now Tekkadan, continued to improve the suit with parts and armor taken from defeated Gjallarhorn mobile suits. Teiwaz technicians later restored the Barbatos to its original appearance and close to its original performance.

Following the defeat of the Brewers, Barbatos' spare parts were used to transform the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion that Tekkadan had obtained from the space pirates into the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion Rebake. After the Montag Company offered their alliance to Tekkadan, the group gives them spare parts for Gundam Barbatos as a gift. These parts were used in Barbatos' subsequent forms, proving to be handy during the atmospheric entry battle and subsequent battles on Earth.

On Earth, the battle at Millennium Island with Carta Issue's forces resulted in Barbatos losing its shoulder armor, and they were replaced by those from a defeated Graze Ritter. It was also upgraded with new waist boosters. En route to Edmonton, Tekkadan met with Carta's forces again, but they were quickly dispatched by the Barbatos. At the outskirt of Edmonton, the Barbatos and Tekkadan's other mobile suits spent three days fighting with Corlis Stenja's forces. The enemy was eventually reinforced by Gaelio Bauduin's ASW-G-66 Gundam Kimaris Trooper and Ein Dalton's EB-AX2 Graze Ein, and the Barbatos was subsequently locked in a fight with the former. With help from McGillis Fareed and his V08-1228 Grimgerde, Mikazuki and Barbatos escaped from the Kimaris Trooper and heads to the city where it stopped the Graze Ein from killing Kudelia Aina Bernstein. During the fight with Graze Ein, Mikazuki was pushed hard and in order to win, he sought more power from the Barbatos via his Alaya Vijnana system. The system responded and improved his reaction speed, leading to Barbatos having better movements. The Barbatos' shoulder armor and backpack were later ejected as decoys, and the suit managed to slice off Graze Ein's forearms after Mikazuki mastered the Long Sword - the Barbatos' only handheld weapon left at that time. The Barbatos then won the battle after piercing Graze Ein's cockpit, killing Ein.

After the battle of Edmonton, the Gundam Barbatos participated in numerous battles for Tekkadan. However, its accumulated damage soon proved too much for Tekkadan's mechanics to repair. Thus, it was sent alongside the Gundam Gusion Rebake to the MS Workshop in Saisei to receive an overhaul, becoming the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus.

Notes & Trivia

Barbatos is the 8th demon of the Ars Goetia. He is an earl and duke of Hell, ruling thirty legions of demons and has four kings as his companions to command his legions. He can speak to animals, can tell the future, conciliates friends and rulers, and can lead men to treasure hidden by the enchantment of magicians.
Barbatos' demon motif could be a nod to the infamous "White Devil" nickname, which is given to various Gundam-type mobile suits in other Gundam series.
Of all the Gundam Frames shown in the anime, Barbatos is the only one with the traditional two-vented mouthpiece.
In the Post Disaster timeline, Barbatos and Astaroth both possesses the two-vented mouthpiece.

Design & Development

As the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos fought many battles with its pilot Mikazuki Augus, it became too damaged to be repaired.[1] It was then sent to the MS Workshop in Saisei, the home base of Teiwaz, for an overhaul.[1] The new name "Lupus" was given by the Saisei's Chief Mechanic, who was also responsible for the mobile suit's maintenance.[2]

Based on Mikazuki's combat data, the mobile suit was reconfigured as a close combat unit, and its reaction speed and mobility were also increased, with adjustments made through the Alaya-Vijnana System to deepen the link between the machine's movement and the pilot's own senses.[1][2][3] As a result, the Gundam Frame's response rate was adjusted to match with the speed that Mikazuki senses.[1][2] Other changes to the suit's frame include the arms' frame being lengthened to match Mikazuki's senses, while the legs' frame were modified and has ground-use suspensions to help adapt seamlessly to combat in all environment.[3][4] Lastly, frame parts in the arm and leg joints were replaced by those reproduced by Teiwaz, this helps to resolve the accumulated damages and also improved their movability.[2] The boosters on the waist were based on those previously used by Barbatos 5th form Ground Type and 6th form.[4]

The suit's close combat armaments were rebuilt to better fit Mikazuki's fighting style, and handheld firearms were kept to a minimum, instead the suit uses exchangeable firearms attached to the forearms.[4] Defense wise, as damage sustained until the suit gets close to the opponent is a major issue, it is fitted with light body armor that is designed to most effectively fend off the impacts of being shot by a greater use of curved surface.[1][2]
Armaments

    Sword-Mace

A heavy, close combat weapon developed by Teiwaz's technicians for Barbatos Lupus, its shape and weight is designed to avoid hampering the MS' mobility.[1][3] Although shaped like a sword, it is a chopping weapon rather than a slicing one.[3]

    200mm Gun

Mounted on forearms, the gun barrel faces backward when not in use and rotates forward when in use.[2] The recoil when fired is absorbed by the weapon's rail slide, minimizing the effect on the control of the MS.[2] Close combat weapons can be held in hand while the 200mm Gun is equipped.

    Twin Mace

Smaller than the usual mace, the twin maces are easier to wield.[3] Main weapon used by Barbatos Lupus in a melee.[5]

    Arm Rocket Launcher

Close to mid-range shooting weapons that fires 2.8m long rockets.[6][4] Like the 200mm gun, they are mounted on the forearms via rail slides that absorb recoil.[3] The launchers normally face backwards and will rotate forward when used. If required, they can be fired while facing backwards.[7] Close combat weapon can be held in hand while the launchers are equipped.

    New Long Sword

A long sword forged by the MS workshop in Saisei for Barbatos Lupus' use.[8] Its blade is made of the same rare alloy as that used in mobile suit's frames, and in the hands of the right pilot, it can bisect a mobile suit.[8] Not used in the anime.

    Large Railgun

A large handheld electromagnetic launcher, its barrel slides forward when in use.[4][9]

    Valkyrja Buster Sword

Borrowed from the V08Re-0526 Helmwige Reincar, it is a large sword that exceeds the mobile suit’s height and was designed for use against mobile armors.[7]

    Variable Mace

A mace with a spike-like claw that can flip out from the tip to catch the target upon impact.[10] A pair of variable maces are used in the manga by Barbatos Lupus against Galan Mossa's mobile suit team.[11]

Equipment

    Sub Arm

Like the original Barbatos, Barbatos Lupus has a pair of Sub Arms on its back for mounting weapons. They also contain a hidden claw each that can be used for attacking enemy units at the rear.[3]

    Alaya-Vijnana System

The cable connecting the pilot to the machine's Alaya-Vijnana system is lengthen and can be extended out of the cockpit.[2] This is to assist Mikazuki who has lost sensation in his right arm.[2]

Operational History

Gundam Barbatos Lupus was first deployed during the defense of a half-metal mine run by Kudelia Aina Bernstein's Admoss Company. It aided the other Tekkadan's Mobile Suits, the Shiden and Shiden Custom, in repealing the attack of the Dawn Horizon Corps' Garm Rodi forces. After forcing the enemy to withdraw, the Barbatos Lupus stopped working due to an impact received from its hard landing earlier.

Later it was deployed to fight off the Dawn Horizon Corps in space, destroying multiple Garm Rodis and eventually defeating the Hugo used by the group's leader Sandoval Reuters, leading to his capture by Mikazuki.

During the Arbrau-SAU war, it was deployed alongside the Gundam Gusion Rebake Full City and some Shidens to aid Tekkadan's Earth Branch and protected McGillis during the conflict. During a later battle in the same war, it rescued a shocked and inexperienced Hush Middy from a Geirail Scharfrichter.

The Barbatos Lupus was severely damaged in the battle against the Hashmal, a mobile armor from the Calamity War. It was then sent back to Saisei for an overhaul, and was upgraded into the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex.

Before the damaged Barbatos Lupus was sent to Saisei, a group picture of Tekkadan was taken in front of it. A copy of this photo was seen years later in the house where Akatsuki and Atra live in.

Notes & Trivia

Barbatos is the 8th demon of the Ars Goetia.
The word 'Barbatos' is derived from the latin "barbatus" which means bearded. The Ars Goetia demon is often depicted with a beard, and this is reflected on the suit via the red chin piece.
    "Lupus" is Latin for "wolf".
With its Alaya-Vijnana System's safety limiter removed, Barbatos Lupus' eyes glows a blood red. This may pay homage to the EXAM System, where mobile suits utilizing this system will have red eyes if the system is activated.
Barbatos Lupus' battle with Hashmal maybe a reference to the biblical confrontation between demons and angels. From another point of view, it could look like a regal knight combating a dangerous monster.
An image similar to the sigil of the demon Barbatos can be seen on the console upon activation. In addition, the Teiwaz logo can also be seen.

The ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex (ガンダムバルバトスルプスレクス?) is the main mobile suit featured in the second half of Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS second season. It is piloted by Mikazuki Augus.
Contents[show]
Design & Development

The Gundam Barbatos Lupus fought a fierce battle against the Hashmal in the vicinity of Chryse, a city on Mars and was so severely damaged that it was sent to the Saisei's MS workshop for a major upgrade.[1] Data sampling of Barbatos Lupus’ fight with Hashmal was also conducted during the overhaul.[2] To match the combat data of Mikazuki Augus, who was increasing his compatibility with the mobile suit through the Alaya-Vijnana System, the machine's response speed was increased to the limit of its theoretical value.[1] Movement of the frame's joints were also delicately tuned to match the pilot's actual sensations.[1] The suit's cockpit hatch was changed from its predecessors' top opening method to a front opening style in consideration of Mikazuki's worsened disabilities.[3]

To more intuitively reflect Mikazuki's fighting style, the suit's arms were enlarged and elongated like a beast, and various weapons are fitted on the body.[1][4][5] The arms' frame structure was also upgraded and reinforced.[1] The tail parts of the Hashmal was transplanted to the suit's back, and through the Alaya-Vijnana System, Mikazuki controls this tail blade as if it was a limb.[1] Overall, the Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex is customized for close combat, and its silhouette gives it a more ferocious look than its predecessors.[1][4] The word 'Rex' means 'King' in latin, and this is fateful as Mikazuki is going along with Orga Itsuka, whose aspiration is to be King of Mars.[1]
Armaments

    Ultra Large Mace

Developed for Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex by Teiwaz's MS workshop, besides fitting Mikazuki's combat style, this heavy weapon also takes into view combat against battleships.[1][3] The telescopic handle helps to close the gap with enemy unit.[1] When not in use, it can be mounted on the rear waist horizontally.[1]

        Pile Bunker

The tip of the mace and the bottom of its handle are equipped with a pile bunker each.[1]

    Tail Blade

The Hashmal's tail parts were transplanted onto Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex's back, and combined with a blade made of rare metal for better close combat performance.[3][5] The resulting tail blade can retract or extend to strike opponents as directed by Mikazuki through the Alaya-Vijnana System, and is useful for one against many or other unfavorable combat situations.[2][5]

    Rex Nail

Due to the rex nails mounted on the fingers, the arms of the Barbatos Lupus Rex can function as powerful weapons that can pierce opponent machines.[1] Like the Tail Blade, the rex nails and the suit's toes are made of rare metal.[6][2]

    200mm Gun

Each forearm contains a built-in 200mm gun.[1] This weapon is a further development of the Barbatos Lupus’ firearms.[2]

    Heel Bunker

Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex is equipped with pile bunkers on both heels.[5]

    GR-H01 9.8m Battle Axe

A close combat weapon used by Graze that the Barbatos Lupus Rex obtained temporarily during its last battle.[7]

    Anti-Ship Lance Mace

    A lance-shaped mace designed for anti-ship combat, it has a telescopic handle.[8]

Equipment

    Sub-Arms

A sub-arm is stored within each forearm.[1] When deployed, the black part on the back of the forearm will flip open, and the sub-arm will unfold into its full length.[1]

Operational History

The Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex was first seen in combat during Tekkadan's attack on JPT Trust, a Teiwaz subsidiary headed by Jasley Donomikols. It easily dispatched the latter group's mobile suits, and ended the battle by killing Jasley through destroying the bridge of his ship with the Ultra Large Mace.

It was later sent to Earth to assist in McGillis Fareed's coup of Gjallarhorn, and played a role in disabling the mobile suits at the organization's headquarter. It then engaged the ASW-G-XX Gundam Vidar in the headquarter's basement. Initially, Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex had the edge over its enemy, but they fought on more equal terms when the Gundam Vidar's Alaya-Vijnana Type E was activated. The fight stopped after ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael's intervention, and Gundam Vidar retreated back to space.

During the battle between the Arianrhod fleet and McGillis's Coup d'etat group, which Tekkadan had allied with, the Barbatos Lupus Rex was kept occupied by the unrelenting EB-08jjc Reginlaze Julia as per Rustal Elion's plan. This neutralized the effects the Gundam could've had on the battle. Later, when Tekkadan came up with a daring plan to charge into the Arianrhod fleet, the Barbatos Lupus Rex was deployed as the vanguard. It then clashed with the Reginlaze Julia again and severed the latter's left arm. However, it failed to stop the Reginlaze Julia from interfering with the ASW-G-64 Gundam Flauros (Ryusei-Go)'s Dainsleif shot at the enemy flagship, and as a result, the attack missed its mark.

When Tekkadan's Mars HQ was surrounded by the Arianrhod fleet, the Barbatos Lupus Rex was deployed alongside the group's remaining mobile suits to buy time for the non-combatants to escape via the secret tunnel underneath the base. The suit was heavily damaged when the Arianrhod fleet launched an orbital bombardment using the Dainsleifs. Despite this, it continues fighting until its pilot, Mikazuki, passed away from his fatal injuries.

Notes & Trivia

The Barbatos Lupus Rex's appearance, with its claws and extendable tail blade, bears a resemblance to a demon, which is fitting as it is named after the demon 'Barbatos'.
Lupus means "wolf" while Rex means "king" in Latin. "Barbatos Lupus Rex" literally means "Barbatos-Wolf-King".
The unused concept design for the final battle, which features the left shoulder armor from a Reginlaze and Barbatos 1st Form's left arm, can be replicated in Gunpla form using parts from the HGIBA MS Option Set 9.
Barbatos Lupus Rex is the only Post Disaster Gundam with a double V-fin.

Grookey would be lower than Sobble, because we have WAY too many monkeys at this point, but I decided to look at it from a vacuum instead. I've also changed my mind on Eldegoss; it's not a downgrade, I was just expecting Gossifleur to evolve into something else, rather than a thing we've already been shown previously in the Direct.

I think the starters are perfectly fine but yeah, the legendaries are easily the worst ones we've ever gotten.

That other pre evolved grass one also looks way too farmiliars to some older ones TBH. Not as egregious as the Pickachu clones we've gotten granted.

The Venator-class Star Destroyer,[1] also known as the Venator-class Destroyer,[13] Republic attack cruiser,[3] and later Imperial attack cruiser,[14] was one of the capital ships used extensively by the Galactic Republic during the later parts of the Clone Wars, as well as by the Galactic Empire. It was designed and constructed by Kuat Drive Yards and Allanteen Six shipyards.[1]

Venator Class Star Destroyer CS

A stock ship was 1,137 meters long, making it one of the largest capital ships capable of atmospheric operations, landing on planets to load and unload troops and vehicles.[1]

The Venator-class was born from the success of the Acclamator-class assault ship and was designed by Lira Blissex for the purpose of serving as a medium-sized, versatile multi-role warship.[1]
Roles

While designed primarily for ship-to-ship combat,[3] the Venator had secondary roles ranging from starfighter carrier,[15] to military transport and battleship escort.[1] The expanded carrier role made the Venator-class popular amongst Jedi starfighter aces.[1]

As a popular multi-role warship of the Republic Navy, the Venator was considered heavily armed and armored enough to lead assaults on Rim worlds like Utapau as well as fast enough to chase down blockade runners.[1] Due to being relatively less self-sufficient than other ships in the fleet, the Venator-class often relied upon supply lines to aid long-range campaigns.[16]

These vessels also sported the red color of diplomatic immunity all Republic ships sported; by the beginning of the Galactic Empire, the hulls were deprived of this symbol of the Republic, giving them a dull Imperial-gray appearance.[7]
Offensive and defensive systems
VenatorTurbolasers-HH

A Venator-class Star Destroyer firing all batteries.

The armament of a single Venator-class Star Destroyer consisted of eight DBY-827 heavy dual turbolaser turrets, two medium dual turbolaser cannons, fifty-two point-defense dual laser cannons or turbolasers,[7] and four heavy proton torpedo tubes.[1]

The Venator-class's eight heavy dual turbolaser turrets were its main weapons and had two tracking modes. In its precise, long-range tracking mode, the DBY-827 could hit a target vessel at a range of ten light minutes. During close-range fights, the turrets could rotate in three seconds with their fast-tracking mode.[1] In terms of firepower, these weapons rivaled the main battery on the later Imperial I-class Star Destroyers.

The DBY-827 had seven different power settings. This allowed the Venator's pilots and gunners to select a range of destruction, from a small strike to a vaporizing blow. As a true warship, the Venator-class Star Destroyer could divert almost all of its reactor output to its heavy turbolasers when needed. As a result of this, a flotilla of Venators could break through the shields of a Trade Federation battleship with ease.[1]

At the suggestion of Anakin Skywalker, a heavy SPHA turbolaser cannon was installed within the ventral hangar bay of some Venator-class ships of the Open Circle Fleet. These weapons were meant to protect the Star Destroyers while they opened their long ventral doors to the army complement bays.[1] They would be used to considerable effect during the Battle of Coruscant.[7]
Propulsion systems
BlockadeofFelucia

The engine units of a Venator.

Venators were equipped with powerful engines, a Class 1 hyperdrive with an effective range of 60,000 light years. Its main reactor could annihilate up to 40,000 tons of hypermatter fuel per second, producing at maximum 3.6 × 1024 watts of power.[1] This power was routed to four primary thrusters, two secondary thrusters and two tertiary thrusters, with four on either side of the hyperdrive mounting.

The main engine room had several vertical power cylinders littering the room, with walkways on different levels providing access to onboard personnel.[17]
Complement

Despite possessing powerful weaponry and being on par with the Victory-class, the Venator-class was designed with an additional starfighter carrier role in mind. Its hangars were far larger than those on other Star Destroyers like the Victory-class and later models like the Imperator/Imperial-class.[1]

Prior to the formation of the Galactic Empire, a typical Republic Venator carried a complement of 420 fighters: 192 V-wing or V-19 Torrent starfighters, 192 Eta-2 Actis-class interceptors, and at least 36 ARC-170 starfighters. The ship also typically maintained a variety of shuttles in its hangars. Since it was capable of entering a planet's atmosphere and landing on its surface, the pre-Imperial Venator-class had a standard complement of 40 LAAT/i gunships and 24 military walkers for planetary operations. The cruiser was also capable of holding one prefabricated garrison base for long term battles on planets.[1]
Venator hangar

The main hangar of a Venator-class vessel.

In addition to a standard ventral hangar bay, the bow of a Venator could open up to reveal a half kilometer long dorsal flight deck. This flight deck enabled the Venator-class to rapidly launch hundreds of fighters. However, the slow opening and closing of the armored bow doors could leave the ship extremely vulnerable.

Although strong shielding was used to compensate for this weakness, this design aspect would be entirely omitted from later Star Destroyer designs, such as the Imperator/Imperial-class. On ships in the Open Circle Fleet, a SPHA turbolaser cannon was positioned near the ventral hangar opening for the purpose of protecting the ship along the ventral arc. The Venator-class also had hangar-openings on its port and starboard side. These were used to dock with space stations, mooring towers, and larger starships, for the purpose of transferring troops and materials.[1]
Command tower
Venator bridge

The bridge of an Imperial Venator-class Star Destroyer.

Because of its carrier role, the Venator-class featured a novel dual bridge tower design. The port tower was the starfighter command bridge, while the starboard tower served as a standard helm and command bridge. On future designs, this dual bridge design was also employed.[1] A similar dual-tower design was also seen on the Secutor-class Star Destroyer.[11]

The command bridge was designed with dual crew pits where operators would be stationed to control the ship's various functions. Officers would patrol walkways above and have a panoramic view to the outside.[7] This bridge design would become a standard feature on most Imperial warships.[18]

On top of each tower was a hyperwave communications and scanner module. Its function was similar to the scanner globes on the Imperial-class and other KDY vessels, but it had a flat shape.[1] Flagships in Venator flotillas had red-painted conning towers to separate them from others.[19]

Venator ventral view

The keel and ventral hangar bay of a Venator-class Star Destroyer during the Clone Wars

The Venator-class shared some design-characteristics with a warship class that served in the Mandalorian Neo-Crusader fleet thousands of years before the Clone Wars.[20]

Venator-class Star Destroyers were deployed in many battles during the Clone Wars, most notably during the Battle of Coruscant when upwards of a thousand such ships helped protect the capital,[15] and played pivotal roles in the repulsion of the CIS forces and the rescue of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.[7] Separatist forces categorized this kind of vessel as Cruiser-class, to contrast the Escort-class designation for smaller vessels, like the Arquitens-class and Consular-class.[21]

These warships were fast enough to pursue blockade runners, while also being large enough to lead independent operations, such as the Battle of Cato Neimoidia, Battle of Kashyyyk, and the Battle of Utapau. They could be used to land troops on planetary surfaces, and serve as escorts for larger battleships, but their primary role was as mainline cruisers and starfighter carriers.[1][22] As ships of the line, they were often grouped in lines of three to four ships.[23]
Imperial period and beyond

By the end of the Clone Wars, it had become the most popular capital ship of the Republic, although shortly after the formation of the New Order, it was eclipsed by designs inspired by the Victory-class.[1] Despite this, Venators were used to great effect in the early years of the Empire.[24] In the Empire, these ships were stripped of the colorful markings of the Republic models.[14] At least two Venators were involved in pursuing the L-4000 smuggler ship Uhumele alongside a contingent of fighter squadrons.[11]
Imperial attack cruisers

Venator-class Star Destroyers of the Galactic Empire.

Eventually, more robust vessels such as the Imperator- and Tector-class became favored, and the Venator and its variants were phased out.[1] This was partially due to its over-reliance on starfighters, as it went against the prevailing Tarkin Doctrine and due to its prominent position in the Republic Navy, which the Empire attempted to distance itself from.[25]

This led to even more fringe groups obtaining Venators, as well as several Imperial Moffs, who used them in their private defense fleets,[25] and for their various militias.[26] The Mandalorian Supreme Strategist commanded a Venator Star Destroyer during the early years of the Galactic Civil War. It was destroyed during an engagement above Mandalore with a Zann Consortium fleet.[8]

The Imperial Navy used several Venators as flight schools for military pilots, alongside several Imperial-class Star Destroyers and captured Lucrehulk-class battleships. The Vensenor was a notable vessel that served in this role.[11] Imperial Venators were also used as part of the security cordon for the Sanctuary Pipeline to the Endor system during the construction of the Death Star II.[27]

At least one Venator served in Admiral Daala's Maw Irregular Fleet in 40 ABY[10] to 44 ABY.[28] At least two were used in the Evacuation of Dac in 137 ABY, with one transformed into a drone ship and fitted with an ion pulse to distract the Sith-Imperial fleet.[12]
Behind the scenes
Venpro

Venator-class Star Destroyer profile shots.

The engine room of the Venator-class is modeled after the Gravity Control System of the SDF-1 Macross, from the first Macross anime series.[29]

In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross-Sections, the Venator-class is described both as serving the part of a destroyer escorting larger Republic battleships, and described as a battleship itself (the latter in the section on the Invisible Hand). This is most likely a reference to different classification systems being in use, one of which labels Star Destroyers like the Victory- and Venator-classes being medium-sized destroyers, while another labels them as battleships.

In the same book, the Utapauns are said to use "downscaled" warships, such as the Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser. This explains why the Dreadnaught-class is often referenced as a cruiser rather than a frigate (even when many were rebuilt into assault frigates), despite being smaller than both the Empire's Star Destroyers and their Star Cruisers. A similar system would be described by New Republic scholars as the Imperial Classification System in many of the West End Games sourcebooks.

In the early development of Star Wars: Empire at War, the Venator-class was seen in at least one or two promotional screenshots. It was then featured in the demo but was cut from the final game, though it can be modded back into the game completely. The unit was eventually included in Empire at War's expansion pack Forces of Corruption and can be purchased in the game's Skirmish free-play mode; it is not available, however, in story-related scenarios.

The Mitsubishi MK-6 Amplified Mobility Platform (or "AMP" suit) is a distant descendant of the first military exoskeletons used on Earth in the mid-21st century. It was improved during military service in a myriad of combat theaters – from arctic to jungle to desert – over the decades. Sealed and pressurized models for toxic environments were developed as well. The suit is used extensively on the Moon and Mars colonies (where they are powered by fuel cells and/or monopropellant ceramic turbines). Its well-tested capabilities have proved invaluable in the deadly environment of Pandora. The Na'vi name for it roughly translates as "shield that walks" or "not-demon walking".[1]

FunctionalityEdit

The full-body AMP suit.
The human-operated multi-purpose machine amplifies the strength and mobility of a soldier or civilian worker while providing protection from military and environmental threats. Unlike earlier designs in which weapons were integrated into limbs, the AMP suit is a multi-purpose machine, able to duplicate all functions of the infantry soldier. Since soldiers spend much of their time loading and unloading equipment, and performing other tasks besides operating weapons, it was determined that the AMP suit needed the same functionality as a human: two legs, two arms, and highly dexterous hands. This allows not only a wide range of functions, but allows the suit to operate a variety of weapons systems.

Arms operate in a directly scaled relationship to the operator’s arms, which allows better spatial positioning of the hands. The fingers and thumb are in direct 1:1 ratio. The servo armature has force feedback, and resists the movement of the operator’s arms when the suit's limbs meet an obstacle. The operator can "feel" what the suit is doing. It is said that the suit can be operated in full darkness, by a skilled driver, by "feel" alone. The legs are actuated by foot-pedals which amplify on an even larger ratio. In fact the leg sensors work slightly differently than the arms. Due to the confining spatial envelope around the feet and legs of the operator, the pedals cannot move in long strides, even on a scaled relationship. Instead, they sense the force and direction of the input and the on board computer triggers a corresponding programmed movement of the legs. So the operator creates pressure and direction "cues" which trigger leg movements. The suit executes the "intention" of the pilot, calculating terrain factors and momentum to perform balanced movement.[2] While an average pilot can learn to manipulate the AMP suit in combat conditions, it takes months longer to master the transition from supine to an upright position. However, through the use of gyroscopes and stability chips, AMP suits rarely topple. Auto stability programming maintains center of balance. If the operator happens to be injured or killed, the AMP suit has an automated "walk back" feature. This was developed to protect the AMP suit, as it is a significant investment to the RDA.[1]

Using the suit, a driver is able to punch through a tree trunk, lift a half ton cargo crate, or rapidly build prefab units without a construction crew. In combat, the suit can provide heavy fire support to infantry units and protect its driver from harsh conditions.
AppearancesEdit

The AMP suit in James Cameron's Avatar: The Game

AMP suits are seen in many parts of the film, where they are assigned mainly to base defense and patrol duties. Jake Sully is assigned to Col. Quaritch and finds him at the hangar ready to enter and activate his AMP suit.

In the Assault on the Tree of Souls, Col. Quaritch's forces used small arms and 30mm cannon-armed AMP suits to cut down Na'vi warriors and their direhorse mounts, but were unable to kill the near-bulletproof hammerhead titanotheres as they charged, wiping out the entire AMP suit complement. Lyle Wainfleet was one of the RDA soldiers killed while in his AMP suit.

When Jake Sully damaged Quaritch's Dragon Assault Ship (during the final battle), Quaritch escaped in his AMP suit before the ship crashed. During his journey alone to destroy the Tree of Souls, he came across Jake's avatar link unit. He attempted to kill Jake's human form but was challenged by Neytiri, riding a thanator, and later Jake (in his avatar form). With his AMP suit's rifle destroyed, Quaritch unsheathed the suit's combat knife and killed the thanator, trapping Neytiri under its lifeless body. Interrupted by Jake in turn, the two engaged one another in combat. Quaritch eventually gained the upper hand when he breached the link shack, exposing Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere. Ready to kill Jake's avatar with his own Na'vi knife, Quaritch died when Neytiri shot two arrows into his exposed torso. The AMP suit was largely unharmed, aside from a damaged sensor display, pilot seat and canopy.
UsageEdit
Amp suit moving cargo

The AMP suit can be used to move cargo.
Unlike other more exotic military suit designs in which weapons were integrated into the limbs, the AMP suit is a multi-purpose machine, able to mimic all the abilities of the infantry soldier. This allows a wide range of functions, including the ability to operate a variety of weapons systems.

The suit's weapons are even more lethal than its raw strength. The suit tends to be heavily armored and can be armed with a hip-fired GAU-90 30mm autocannon, fed via an ammo belt at the back.

The other non-standard weapon is a combat knife of self-sharpening diamond-hard ceramic, as well as an optional flamethrower. To match the scale of the suit, the knife's blade is over three feet long and cuts through many metals. The AMP suit knife is especially favored by Special Forces AMP pilots. [1]

Prior to 2152, they were also seen throwing mines, which would explode after a short delay.
Activist Inside Info Edit

What follows is a hand written note from an activist determined to show others how to defend against RDA control.[1]
"Even with gyros and stability chips, its easier to knock down than they let on. A length of wire cable
properly placed does the trick. Cannons ammo feed line has been known to jam"

Quaritch's AMP suit (Beyond Glory) Edit

Quaritch in his AMP suit
Quaritch has demonstrated superior piloting skills in his AMP suit. Quaritch had nicknamed his suit "Beyond Glory" and had painted a dragon on the gun, consistent with his callsign, "Papa Dragon".[3]

TriviaEdit

Similar suits are the Cyclops from Halo Wars, the mech Atlas used by Cerberus in Mass Effect 3 and the Armored Personnel Unit (APU) walkers from The Matrix series.
James Cameron also had similar exoskeletons in the movie Aliens. Although the loader exosuits were made to lift heavy objects, one was used to battle the Xenomorph queen at the end of the movie.

disappointed with the game’s soundtrack at this point as nothing has stood out except for the remixed Space Pirate theme. I’m hoping it gets better and provides some bangers like the first game here soon.

The hell, man? Prime 2 has the single best Title Theme in the history of forever.

Why is the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam the only mobile suit in it's lineage to not have a core fighter? Does it have a regular eject system? And why is it called the Universal Century if its meant to be a whole era like B.C. and A.D. and lasts for more than 100 years? Also if Rita had seen the future all along, why didn't she tell Michele just to not give Neo Zeong to the Zeons and to destroy it rather than mind-gaming  and guilt tripper her freinds over the course of like a decade?
