Jono. Taking a quick peek around. Other folks have had the issue before as well. BOTH, 360 users and PC users have lost saves to updates to which they can never get back.
I was, a bit scatter fucked in the head and thought for some reason that you were disconnected from LIVE for a time which can contribute to blank slates in games when loaded up. But obviously a disk drive wouldn't cause that.
So. I do apologize. If it helps, the first place I ever set up got fucked over as well. And, if I had to flip a coin on it I might bet that if I loaded it up I might lose it as well.

Not really. Take the primary things you need to run minecraft. A tv. An xbox. A power supply. Make a holder frame, sort of like a harness over your shoulders. Xbox is strapped to your back, and a simple windup generator is attached to your lower back. Attach some windup pulleys to the generator and wrap them round your thighs so you can charge as you walk. A holder frame for a flatscreen Tv. Now plug everything in and go. It's only ridiculous because it seems unconventional. You remember what a boom box is chronic?

How does your mechanic even turn a profit?
He never stops working. He's the only guy in the community he lives in who knows mechanics, and in the surrounding area as well. He's a good barter. Goes to auctions to find parts. Gets good deals on things and he owns an old school. Now. His entire school is packed with parts. He's got about 50-60 years worth of knowledge on mechanics. This guy knows his machines. Everybody goes to him for help. He's not a business operated garage. All under the table. That's how.
