well like tru said you can kill him later but if you really want him to stop attacking you then go to bell tower where you fought those two gargoyles and speak to the npc inside the tower, you can buy this thing with souls to reset the dude at firelink

Because you're stuck... I killed 9/10 characters through my game. I didn't know the concept of allies in battle, because I had killed all who offered their help.
