The Flood / How many of you can write well?
« on: September 10, 2014, 06:08:25 PM »
We need to do something to draw some more (quality) members into our little group, and like one individual said (which I forgot about until someone else said the same thing) we could do a sort of blog/review/news section of the forum and add it to a front page for visitors to see when they land here.

Anyone interested in this? Anyone have another good idea to bring in new recruits?

The Flood / So, about this shitposting
« on: September 08, 2014, 07:25:50 PM »
Yeah, I know. Shitposting isn't against the rules because it can become a bit tricky figuring out which shitposters to ban and which ones are legitimate discussions. The Flood is for stuff that doesn't fit elsewhere, after all.

But...I'd like to direct your attention to this nice little open-ended rule in the rule thread:
Quote
Don't be a dumb ass
Every little thing isn't listed here, but get this: I own this forum. So, keep your head and accept the fact that your posts can be deleted and your account can be suspended or removed without warning.
I'm not saying I'll go so far as to ban your account if you post like you're a pimple-faced preteen, I'm just suggesting that these threads some of you are so fond of making might suddenly become locked or disappear completely. Like magic.

Besides that, Slash... Eh... I've seen Kiyo post some opinions that rustled some jimmies, so it'd be a bit of a double standard to prevent you from shitposting too, but Mods (and Monitors to a lesser degree) should probably exercise a little common sense and restraint while posting. You're a goddamn staff member with awesome orange text, so don't be a little bitch about it, Ninjas.

News / Maintenance Tonight
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:31:57 PM »
I just got an email from our host, and they'll be doing some maintenance tonight on the server we're hosted on. Don't freak out when the site goes offline; it's completely temporary and they say it should only last 30 minutes or so.

Quote
This email is notification of server maintenance tonight, 8 September, 2014, between 8:00 pm and 2:00 am MDT (UTC/GMT-6), for the server which hosts theflood.co.

The maintenance will include approximately 30 minutes of downtime during this time. None of your data will be lost, and any temporary performance issues you experience may be due to the maintenance process. This maintenance adds extra security and performance to your server.

We apologize for such short notice and for any inconvenience this may cause.

EDIT: I've backed up the forum and database, but I won't be doing any updates or changes tonight since it might interfere with the maintenance.

Serious / Do you tip servers?
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:52:27 PM »
Obligatory Reservoire Dogs Scene
YouTube

This has been a bit of a struggle between me and the rest of my family. I am convinced that I should only have to pay for what is on the receipt, while others (my grandmother especially) insist on taking the time and effort to whip out a calculator and figure out the correct percentage to give the server.

I understand that in some places (probably all places) the servers are paid less than minimum wage and are expected to make up the rest on tips, but isn't that a kind of shitty and backwards thing to do? Why doesn't the business just pay the server a real wage and let the customers know that a tip isn't needed?

I get called an asshole a lot when I refuse to pitch in on the tip, but I can't justify giving extra money to someone when they're already being paid—especially when it's practically blackmailed out of you. What do you think?

EDIT: to be clear, I don't ever tip.

News / Nested Quotes Are Back
« on: September 05, 2014, 08:38:23 PM »
This is a short update because I just found a quick css fix for the nested quote issue. You may now nest up to 3 levels of quotes, so this shouldn't impact mobile.

News / Updates to Rating System
« on: September 04, 2014, 06:23:09 PM »
In response to complaints about consistent downvoting, I've reconfigured the Prefix rating system to take activity and post count into account more so than Trust.

I won't go into details, but the new system will make it more difficult to reach the higher Prefixes while also making it easier to keep them if you're active and have a high post-per-day count.

They should go live any time and you will probably rank down.

News / Updated Thread View
« on: September 03, 2014, 11:54:59 PM »
I'm about to push some significant updates to thread view. Refresh your page if you're experiencing broken elements before reporting an error.

EDIT: Here's some changes you should be aware of.

1. Trust rating is located inside the signature.
2. Signature and action buttons have moved to reflect B.old more closely.
3. XBL, PSN, and Steam ID fields added to signature.
4. Trust title is removed on mobile to help keep lines from breaking.
5. For mods, the delete and split tools are inside the signature to keep the row of buttons from becoming ridiculous.

The Flood / Anyone else having trouble with Firefox?
« on: September 02, 2014, 12:46:41 AM »
I basically just gave up on it after it ate my saved tabs (all 30 of them) not once, but twice. Session restore didn't help and the backup files for the saved sessions were from two years ago, so no luck there either.

Now I'm stuck using Chrome. >:(

News / Updates (Anarchy!)
« on: August 28, 2014, 05:16:35 PM »
Firstly, in the forum fixes:

1. I've fixed the Youtube code so that it displays properly on mobile. The old plugin was using the embed element and it wasn't rendering properly.

2. Updated Topics is a new menu item underneath your profile name up top. The "display" of the page needs work, but it should serve you as a replacement for Notifications. Thanks to Nuka for finding this.

We are also beginning our first trial run of Anarchy Weekend. Starting later tonight or early tomorrow, I'll unlock the Anarchy forum for every member with 25 posts or more (though you should start to see the menu item any time now). Anything goes in that forum, except for stuff that would get you into trouble in the real world.

In other words: nothing illegal is allowed there. The board will be active for the weekend and your posts will not be counted.

The next round of voting for nameplates will take place tomorrow as well. The top 2-3 picks will make it into the nameplate pool. Make sure you bastards vote for Tribal.  ;)

I'm out.

The Post

You should give me the "Pro" title. Below is my five-point argument for why this should happen.

Quote
1. I'm a pro.
2. The title is a nice shade of lightish-red; almost a pink. Look how well it works against that harsh white background.
3. The people in the Offtopic forum would know what's up when I walk into a thread. Oh, you're making fun of DeeJ? Well, stop that! That's not pro! I've got your back, DeeJ.
4. The people posting in Destiny would be so confused as to why I had an awesome lightish-red title if I happened to wander in there. Confusion leads to discussion which leads to activity, and maybe even some good threads about Destiny.
5. I spread good words about the Bungie overlords. "Did you hear about Cheat? Cheat's a Pro and Bungie is awesome. Maybe I should buy Destiny." That's literally what would happen; verbatim.

Gaming / Halo 3 Game Night Sept. 6
« on: August 26, 2014, 12:11:33 AM »
Is anyone up for another try at this custom game night? I'm planning this thing for September 6th (a Saturday) at around 6 PM CST to whenever everyone goes offline. It'll be Halo 3 customs, so if you have a gametype or map you want to play, make sure you have it set up and ready to go by game night.

I'll be handing out the Red On You nameplate to everyone who joins up for a few games, so come on in and play a few rounds with us.

EDIT: So, I know I have Kiyo, Noelle, and Slash on my friends list. Everyone else needs to either have them as friends, or send me a request before this thing starts on Saturday.

Congrats to TBlocks, I_IRONMAN_I, and Mr Psychologist on being the first wave of Forum Monitors! These three will be helping the moderation team approve new members' first posts and keeping the forum clean and organized by moving and merging threads.

For those of you not in the know, Monitors are a sort of ninja-member hybrid. They can't delete or lock threads and they can't issue bans.

Septagon / Want the Fiesta Nameplate?
« on: August 21, 2014, 02:55:28 PM »
I'm retracting my previous conditions for acquiring the birthday-like nameplate and offering a much easier task to complete. Bungie.blind has this nifty "Clans" forum that is like a less-entertaining version of The Classifieds back on the old Bnet. You can find it here if you're lazy.

To unlock the nameplate, all you have to do is post a short advertisement on that forum that includes a link to this site as well as your username that you have on here. You can say a few words if you'd like, but all that really needs to be conveyed is that we're an offsite.

An advertisement might look something like this:

Offsite Community
http://sep7agon.net

Check out our offsite!

Thanks,
Cheat.

Then, when you go to request the nameplate in your profile, enter in the URL to the thread on Bnet. That's all there is to it.

The Flood / Nameplate Ideas
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:05:02 PM »
I need some fresh ideas for new nameplates. Pestilence, Legendary, and Eternal are already being considered. I'm also planning on a Veteran or Grizzled nameplate for those members that were around before the switch to bungie.next.

Give me your ideas (or ready-made nameplates)!

EDIT: We're voting for nameplates now, since there are so many custom ones being designed. Post your creations here or in the other nameplate thread(s). Just make sure they're visible come Friday and I'll put them all in a poll for you people to vote on. The custom ones I've already installed are subject to the poll as well, save the mod/admin personal plates.

About 7-10 new plates will be accepted for this first round.

The Flood / How often do you use the search bar?
« on: August 18, 2014, 09:23:37 PM »
I'm talking about the large search bar underneath the forum banner. I'm entertaining the idea of putting it on the list of things to get rid of, since there's already a search menu item up at the top, but I want some more data before I even think about it.

The Flood / Prepare for Offline Mode
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:54:37 PM »
This is just a reminder that tonight (actually tomorrow morning at 1AM CST) the forum will be offline for a couple hours while we move to our more permanent home.

Also, longface makes creepy fan fictions, so if you're into that kind of thing...

Anyway, just don't freak out if you get an error early tomorrow morning. This should not take long to do and after it's done we should not need to move again (I hope). If we get too large, the current host can move us to a VPS.
