^ Snake's MGS thread, currently being bombarded with spoilers by some prankster who thinks he's cute.

So, I can't help but notice that there's nothing in the rules that explicitly prohibits posting unmarked spoilers. As a result, the individual who just ruined an upcoming game for at least four or five excited gamers will go unpunished, under this given ruleset.

This is not okay. I don't want to hear anything about how "spoilers are harmless" or "it's just a game", or whatever. That would be missing the point. The point is, it's a malicious act of trolling--pissing people off, ruining their fun, and laughing at their expense.

So, I propose the aforementioned missing rule--prohibit the posting of all unmarked spoilers. The user in question admits to intentionally spoiling the unreleased content for the sake of "being a dick" and being malicious, and he should be punished for it.

Discuss potential punishments. Personally, I say fuck warnings--if you're gonna spoil something with malicious intent like that, it should be an outright and swift ban up to a fucking year. One week minimum.

Unintentional spoilers can receive a little more clemency. Thoughts?

edit:
Oh, and concerning the potential for "fake" spoilers (because there's been slight confusion over the content's legitimacy):

This should be treated with equal austerity--if not more. It's akin to shouting "FIRE" in a crowded theater.
So it shouldn't go unpunished, either.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
Not only is he posting spoilers for a game for what appears to be the sole purpose of pissing people off, it's for an unreleased game that no person could rightfully be expected to have access to. This isn't spoilers about The Sixth Sense or War of the Worlds, where a person can't be expected to be liable for spoiling things.

In general, this is astounding that a subforum that revolves around discussing video games doesn't have any rule on spoilers at all.

Hmm...
Aye. This is probably a good idea to implement for new releases across the board. What would you say a fair period of time would be? 4-6 months?

As for punishments, well, I really do think this would be tough to moderate unless you take intentions into account. Someone who forgets to put spoiler tags around something once shouldn't be punished the same as someone maliciously and deliberately throwing out spoilers. Perhaps +15 to +20 warning points for a first slip up and +50 to +60 (basically 2-day lite-ban) for someone malicious?

That all seems fair. I mean, I would ban them into Half-Life 3's release date if they were being malicious, personally, but whatever you think is right, I guess. I'd rather see SOMETHING done about it rather than nothing.

I don't think it should really matter. No matter how old the media is there will still be people who haven't consumed it and care about spoilers.

Give them a warning and quickly show them where the spoiler tag is, one warning.

But in some cases if they are clearly spamming and posting spoilers for the sake of grievance, then I think it would warrant a few days ban. Continues even more, it should be taken the same as posting anything else against the rules.

I can't see Gatsby's post, but fuck you man.

Also, I've hit the PM limit for the hour so I can't reply to anyone that sent me a message. Thanks to everyone, though.

I nominate Verb for monitor in Gaming.

He'd enforce this.

I'd also be interested in that position.

Verb and I share very similar opinions regarding spoilers. I've called myself a spoiler Nazi in the past.

The two of us would clean house.

Too light. Cut their hands off, then they can never do it again.

I don't see why anyone is talking of monitors, all they do is talk to the mods and lock threads, it's not like that gets to the mods faster than a report, PM, or IM like Skype, which most of us probably have a mod on.

i'd nominate myself because fuck people who post spoilers purposely, but i didn't want to big myself up.
i can forgive accidental spoilers though, as long as they aren't anything important.

Yup. There was an extraterrestrial force pushing you towards the post button.

A monitor specific to Gaming, especially Verb, would be more effective.

That's beyond stupid.
Max should be 2-3 months.

If you haven't been spoiled for a game that you want after 3 months and you're actively looking up info on it (entering threads on the game, etc), either you're the luckiest person alive or completely oblivious.

Do you not see the word "Monitor" or do you honestly think they can ban people and edit posts?
Because they can't.

Of course, any one of us (or all 3 of us, to be effective) would be ideal fits for the job idea

like, obviously I can forgive accidental spoilers. And I have proof of this.

In my Street Fighter thread, Sandtrap accidentally posted Quiet spoilers. Thankfully, I hadn't read past the first few words, but I kindly asked him to spoil tag his post.

Done. Fucking. Deal. I'm glad he did it, he responded kindly, and that was that.

But then Gats comes along with his dick out, lathering himself up in MGSV spoiler oil, and sliding around more than phil kessel in the playoffs

He wasn't talking punishments there--he's talking the length of the grace period in which you would (ideally) be able to peruse the forum without fear of getting spoiled.

I see Byrne's point: 6 months is a long time. 2-3 seems good enough, the more I think about it.

there was no force making me doing anything, i could see how important the game is to them and i did it regardless because their rage would be entertaining
