Since pokemon isn't as culturally prevalent or important as Star Wars, and I can't just say 'lightsaber' and have everyone recognise what I'm talking about, I'll provide an example here.

It's not a case of Pokemon not being culturally prevalent as much as it "scratch" being a rather generic word commonly used outside the context of Pokemon.
