You think next gen or even this gen is going to be the last console generation?

Right now we have those smart TV's which are able to use Facebook, Twitter, Netflix and YouTube. It's only a matter of time until the only thing you have to do is plug a controller and a external HDD into them. For console gaming it could be digital. So you download a game from PSN, Live or Nintendo's thing to that HDD to be stored so you can play it anytime you want.

Consoles are a niche product that has expanded greatly, wherever there is a demand for a machine designed specifically with games in mind rather than games as just another feature, there will be consoles. Why do you think music players still exist? Because there are people demanding a music-focussed product, not a smartphone that happens to play music (*cough*iPod touch*cough*)

We might finally make the jump to fully digital though that'll depend on how much the big three are willing to give in that debate. Returns, sharing, etc. Eventually discs will be phased out though. (I'm already there myself)

I don't see us moving away from dedicated hardware in the next 10-15 years. I don't know anyone who would rather stream their games, especially with infrastructure being what it is (not to mention ownership/consumer rights), so dedicated hardware is going to remain a thing for the foreseeable future.

I won't even read a book if it's not the physical fucking thing. Digital stuff is... nice, but we shouldn't allow for it to take over all media. I don't know. Maybe I'm just a conservative old man. But I mean, owning things isn't nearly as much fun if you can't hold it in your hands and say that it's yours.

Bought my ps4 at launch, and I've yet to see if the disc drive works.
Slapped a 2TB in there and called it a day. You don't realize how annoying discs are until you get rid of them.

I understand your desire to 'physically own it', and the perks that come with that.

Just makes more sense for me to go digital. I don't typically sell or loan out my games. Not being able to return them does suck (looking at you destiny), but I usually do enough research to where that's not a problem.

As far as physically having it goes I have it on the hard drive. Same as music, books and movies. Don't have to worry about it being scratched this way either. Plus you can download it to multiple devices, easier traveling, streaming to Vita, etc. Just a better system in my eyes.

I was more referring to her case in particular, because she's a serious collector. With a particular fetish for boxes. She values the boxes with the same amount as the game itself--she won't even play the game if she doesn't have the box to go with it. Right?

Ah that's makes more sense then. I hate boxes with a passion, but love (and miss) box art / guides.
I could understand a collector not wanting to jump.

Buy a disc, save to console, job done??? I'm a little weird I like collecting limited edition game boxes. Well that was until I moved to pc gaming.

Given the fragile nature of them, I can get by with the game, manual, and a working case for them. DS cases work for GBA games, for example.
