If only it was in the game!

Here is a very basic rundown of Destiny's story (with a few mistakes). In case anyone wants to read about it.https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3mzom5/the_tldr_of_destinys_universe_history/

It is amazing how the Traveler, instead of some awesome great being that knows all is just a desperate being trying to run from gods. And Rasputin is a bad ass.

That story is still viciously convoluted.

Interesting, yeah, but it's a clusterfuck.

It has amazing lore. But the story really isn't there. TTK had it, even though it was short though.

Also, that's very condensed. With quite a bit of speculation. I'll look for a better one.

This is the full Book Of Sorrows. That explains the origins of The Hive.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2ox7QwWggdcNlRacy1rVmFzcGs

He states in that thread that they wiped out the Eliksni. We don't know that. I wouldn't pay much attention to that thread. Sorry. Just too much speculation.

We don't know what The Traveler is. It's a machine. Undoubtedly, but who or what built it? Who knows? The Darkness is a physical entity. There's even a conversation between it and Oryx in The Book Of Sorrows. All we know is that they've been going at it for billions of years. And even though the universe is quite huge, it would be safe to assume lots of it, a whole lot of it, is empty and destroyed, with Oryx and his Empire having eradicated so much of it over 5 Billion+ years. Rasputin is pretty cool. After reading other cards, it seems the Traveler tried to flee again once The Darkness came for us, but Rasputin attacked it, leaving it unable to move.

Still no idea what The Darkness is. First it was the Fallen, then the Hive, then the Vex, and now the Hive again. And the Cabal are just...there. For some reason.

Grimoire cards are still the worst method of storytelling I've ever seen in a video game. At least have them in-game like TES books.

It doesn't matter how great lore is if the story presented to you is absolute shit.

It was cheap of bungie to make you go to their shit site for info. Maybe integrate it in the story and have an actual narrative.

No. The Darkness is a physical entity that's billions of years old. The Fallen had the Traveler before us. Then the Darkness attacked them. They are attacking us to get The Traveler back. The Hive(once known as The Krill) work for The Darkness. Oryx and his sisters went down to the core of their planet, which is where The Darkness was trapped. The Leviathan, a servant of The Traveler warned them against it. He told them to take the harder path, go to the sky, and accept The Traveler. With fear on their minds, and not much time, since Krill had very short lifespans, they ignored Leviathan and went to The Deep. There, they encountered The Worms(who are servants of The Darkness) They told them, to accept their larvae. Let them feed off of them. Kill and destroy everything. To bring the Universe to its rightful shape. The more they do that, the hungrier the worms become. So they've killed trillions and trillions of beings to satisfy the worms hunger. Later one, Oryx went down to The Deep(which was The Darkness), he asked the Worm for help, he needed more power. The Worm refused, so he killed it, then talked to The Darkness himself. He then became Oryx, The Taken King.

There you go.

Yes, I get all that. So far we haven't seen the Darkness, only its influence in the various enemies in the game. But without reading the grimoire cards, it's a very reasonable assumption to think The Darkness is just another wishy-washy way of describing the evil found throughout the solar system, just like how 'light' is some ambiguous term for inexplicable but tangible space magic.

And it's all that backstory that just makes the game that much sillier. Oryx is for all intents and purposes a deity that has lived billions of years and killed untold numbers of strong, sentient races. But you can defeat him in a 10 minute firefight? C'mon.

Also, The Cabal are just a huge Military Empire. They've been running for Oryx. Now that he's dead and gone, they've requested direct Empire intervention to finish us off. The Cabal we fight, are only a small stranded group. Child's play compared to their actual Empire.

The Vex are from a different dimension. Crota cut up a wound in his world, and The Vex poured in. They were not able to understand their powers. So the Mind of The Vex emulated them. That's why The Vex are evil. So you could say they work for The Darkness too.

I understand that, but it's just a game. How many games and movies and books have some huge villain that has been an unstoppable force until the main character of the media is somehow able to defeat him her?

I wish they could have added a vendor or library in the Tower so we could actually read the Grimoire ingame, but I really love this lore, it's genuinely great stuff. If only the story telling for the main storyline could be this good (granted Taken King seems to be a step in the right direction).

Oryx might actually be one of the most powerful villains in video game history, based on that story. At some point it just becomes completely unbelievable; at least for the Vex we had to go through various puzzles and tactics to weaken the big bosses, but Oryx just kind of stands around and opens up his weak spot.

Would've been cool if the ghost could narrate grimoire cards during patrols or loading screens.

It was a God, basically. Working for The Darkness. But someone or something killed it. It talked to The Osnium King, telling him to join The Darkness. It's the same thing Oryx and his sisters talked to. Except the ones they talked to were alive.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
This sounds more convoluted than learning 40k from the wiki.

It was never said to be just one of those races. We could assume before the book of sorrows the darkness was the collective force of all these enemies, but now it's made clear to be something else entirely

Bungie loves it's nouns

Elite
Brute
Grunt
Hunter
Prophet
Drone
Flood
Fallen
Cabal
Vex
Hive
Traveller
Leviathan
Darkness

I do like how they just sort of forgot the cabal are a thing, though
