DS2 wishes it has something as cool as Anor Londo

Its best moments so far have been when it straight up rips off DS1

Alright because it pissed me off so bad, I'm going to make a list of complaints

1) The combat is slow and clunky

Half of what makes DS so good is the combat. DS2 says fuck all that. Every time I roll, parry, or drink, I feel like a new DS game has come out by the time I actually perform the action. Dodging and parrying at the last second is impossible so you just have to wait until the enemy finishes a flurry attack and then R1 spam them. Goodbye nuance. Forget having to decide between striking, dodging, drinking, or parrying. Now you just take turns backing away and hitting each other

2) Level design

Jesus fucking Christ this is why I quit. Remember that sneaky double fake wall leading to the Great Hollow in DS1? Now they're everywhere and sometimes they lead to literally nothing. The levels are boring and uninspired. Nothing catches your eye and leads you to where they want you to go. The levels don't loop back on themselves and when they do, it's in a pointless manner. Progression through the level is meh at best. Some times the paths branch off to side areas but it's really hard to tell which one is the main way and which one is just a side area

3) Boss runs

It was a legit strategy to run past everything to get to the bosses in DS1. Now the levels are designed in such a way that you can't skip by the enemies and you have to kill them before reaching the boss. If you do try to run past them and enter the fog wall, they can stagger you out of entering the fog wall. I have died more times getting to bosses than to the bosses themselves.

4) THE BOSSES

"What did DS players like about the first one?"
"Uh bosses?"
"Yeah that's good, we'll put them every 5O feet in this one"
"Should they have lore significance or be unique in any way?"
"Nah"

5) The lore

This one makes me the most sad. DS1 had a rich world where every item gave insight to the world. Item placement had meaning and the items NPCs used had meaning too. I have 24 hours played and things still aren't coming together for me. They give you an item from the first game, tell you this comes from Lordran but everyone has forgotten the name. And every item is like this. How did Lordran fall, what survived, how long ago was this? They don't bother with any of it. And I don't give a fuck about any of the lore in this new world because it's all disconnected. By the time I got to the Lost Sinner, I had no idea who she was or why she was there. Three areas later and still no mention of her. Pretty piss poor way to treat a character who holds one of the four lord souls.

6) Story telling

DS1 had good structure. You arrive in a strange land and are told to ring two bells. On the way you discover more about the gods and this undead curse. By the time you get the lordvessel you have a pretty good idea of the stakes and factions at play. Gathering the four lord souls, you learn more about the first flame, gwyn, and the implications of what you are doing. By the end, you understand most of the world and why you're doing what you are doing. In DS2, you're told by some woman to collect the lord souls for some reason. Everybody's forgotten about the first flame so it seems like the world is going to die off anyway yet you're still gathering these souls for some reason? Places don't have any significance. Here's a poison windmill. Here's an undead prison. Why are they here? Why are you visiting them? Because we had to make a game that's why.

7) The constant reminder that dark souls is hard

I thought having a "prepare to die" version of DS1 was cringy enough but DS2 takes it to another level. First time I died I got the "welcome to dark souls" trophy. First NPCs I reach and she's banging on about how much I'll die over and over. DS2 misunderstands what makes DS1 great. Miyazaki himself said that difficulty was never the point of DS. This game seems to think that hard is giving the players loads to deal with and stripping them of the tools they need to deal with them. The game doesn't test particular aspects of your skill or give you a unique challenge to overcome. It just thinks that making you die to cheap shit makes the game hard and a hard game = a good game

8) Nitpicking

Some chests have traps but there's no way to check. No real interesting NPCs or factions. Constant references to DS1 that make no sense. Weird ADP stat that increases drinking speed. Doesn't add any new challenge except for being another stat to dump points into.

Overall it's just not fun and worse, not rewarding. I remember after defeating Ornstein and Smough in DS1, you were greeted with the sight of amazing chest ahead, the lighting, the music, the soft voice of a goddess telling you you did it, and the lord vessel. There are no moments like that in DS2. DS1 was hard but fair. This game is hard. I wanted to continue playing DS1 even in its toughest moments. I do not want to continue this game and probably won't

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
you're probably just bad

Having played them back to back recently going from 1 to 2 is night and day in how smooth it is.

Rolling has like a 0.5 to 1 second delay in DS1 and its only 4 directions. In DS2 the roll begins almost instantly which allows these last second dodges far more precisely than in DS1. Fume Knight with DS1's roll would be ridiculous.

I dunno about Estus, it feels like forever in both games. Parrying is nerfed too hard but it was too good in 1. Everything else applies to DS1 as well except in 2 your base movement speed allows for more unlocked maneuvering. You traded parrying for more movement.

The rest of your points i wont disagree much with. And just to be clear i like every souls game.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
I still love all three but 2 is my least favorite. The combat definitely feels very slow, especially after playing a lot of DKS3 which pretty much goes in the complete opposite direction.

The best armor and spells too (Aside from maybe the Ringed City). Really the biggest strenght of DkS2 if how far you could minmax or bring out the power in whatever weird build you wanted. Nothing quite like getting absurd damage out of a literal spoon without relying on Skyrim bugs.

I find the PvP to be the best in the series by far although it’s got its shortcomings like the invader being unable to heal while the host can deepthroat estus all day long and gank the living shit out of you with phantoms. Sure you can heal with warmth or faith miracles but what if I wasn’t a Faith build? Should I just go fuck myself then?

DS1’s PvP is just ass, anyone who enjoys it likely spams DMB falchion and used to be a flipping havelmom before it got nerfed, also probably think Giantdad is the best meme ever. You should play remastered sometime, it’s even worse than the original!

DS3’s PvP is just unbalanced as fuck. The amount of times I’ve one shot or been one shot or stunlocked or GANKED Is astronomical. It seems that when Miyazaki was in control of the games, the PvP aspect got shit on and was literally disregarded as something not important at all, I’m not even dedicating a paragraph to BB. Anyone who plays that game already knows the PvP is broken (if you can even find a fight these days)

In DS2, you’re not going to get stunlocked or two shot by anything. The PvP feels balanced and fair and almost any weapon is viable, you just need to know how to play to it’s strengths.

PvE is ass tho I’ll give that to you OP.

Honestly invaders shouldn't be healing withot miracles. You're already at a huge advantage with the entire world trying to kill your target already and the fact you're forcefully pulled them into a PvP encounter in the first place.

Now duels is another story. Who in the actual fuck thought it would be a good idea to let the host suck down as much Fanta as they want against maanualy summoned Reds and Dragons? But on the bright side Estus is actualy punishable in this game. It's nice not having people just able to panic tank a Soul Spear at 1 HP for no reason.

Seeds of trees of Giants are in bountiful amounts in this game for some reason. If the invader is playing like a slimy shithead and relying on enemies to get you, popping a seed generally makes it a gg without you needing to even attack them. Funny enough these days when I invade, the only people who still use the seeds are Havel cucks with 1 or more phantoms to ensure you have literally no chance of survival unless you are a parry god and have the patience to allow the host to heal while his boyfriends attack you mercilessly. I agree with duels though, thank god that most people have the common sense not to. The advantage to someone healing in a duel though is that you’re obviously better than them and with the ability to heal you can shit on them and still have heals left, then you can gesture spam on their corpse.

Estus in the rest of the games is more or less a a tool for the invader to avoid getting buttfucked by a 2v1 or worse situation. In DS3, this mechanic is especially important because for some reason the game prioritises invasions where there’s a summon in the world (this is literally the equivalent of Miyazaki telling you to look at something pretty over the edge of a cliff and then roundhouse kicking your ass off the edge) so 99% of the situations you run into while invading will be a gank. It doesn’t help at least one of them will be running a weapon that will 2 shot you and if it doesn’t get the second hit off, you’re stunlocked which opens your asshole up for whatever the other player has in store for you.

Legend has it that some Demons Souls invasions are still ongoing because neither player has ran out of fucking grass yet.

Am I missing something because I just tried PvP in DSIII for the first time and it’s bullshit because i Frames don’t work, they get me from a mile away, and hit me even though they clearly didn’t wtf
