If the only 'bad' thing is needing to have prior knowledge of the series to understand the story, then I'm fine with that. I'll make my own decisions on gameplay, but what I played in the beta was fantastic. Which is even weirder for me, as I usually hate arena multiplayers. Warzone looks a blast and definitely more up my street.

With the way AAA reviews have been over the years, if it's not a 9 or above, it's perceived as awful, regardless of its actual quality.
This will hurt 343, which sucks because it looks like their attempt to pander to multiple audiences (lore fanatics, e-sports kids, casuals, content creators, etc...) just confused and alienated critics.

Here's my thoughts. I haven't played the game yet. But it's probably one of the best Halos. MP is looking great. Warzone looks great, and all the reviews say so too. The Single Player. If it's just as good as Halo 4, or better. Then it's fine. Halo 4 had the best SP of all Halos. Story wise. This looks no different. Criticizing the story because you don't know the lore isn't a valid argument as far as I'm concerned.

Halo 5: Locke. His backstory isn't interesting, fans not familiar with Nightfall won't care about him, and the player doesn't personally have a history with him compared to Chief. I could write a better campaign. This is basically his game, because 343i wants to be progressive and all.

God forbid they wait to write their review rather than publish it the first day or the day after without writing up full impressions. Not to mention that publishers use Metacritic's aggregate of review scores to "deliver" bonuses whether or not they pass a certain score. The developers on Fallout New Vegas missed out on a bonus by one fucking Metacritic point.

I don't like the 1-10 scale either way because a 7 is usually the cop out score. No one wants to give a 5 or even a 6 or else the publishers won't give a review copy to the publication.

It's kind of interesting that 4 bad reviews out of 59 will lower your metacritic score by 3 whole points. Generally you'd throw out outliers, but this is metacritic so randomly weighting certain reviews and manipulating the scores to bring in traffic is to be expected.

Since you like Star Wars how did you handle the original trilogy being about Luke and the prequels being about his dad? That must have been hard for you since Luke wasn't in the prequels besides being a baby and for his dad he's hardly seen in the OG trilogy. Hell if you watch a TV series which may be hard for you how do you handle a new character coming into existence? For example in MASH BJ replacing Trapper or Cell in DBZ replacing Frieza? Then you have shows that add characters which may have episodes that are about them or they are seen a lot.

Anyway for your part about the player not having a personally history with him we didn't either with the Chief at first or any other thing out there that is new. How exactly would you suggest we get new characters into something when the player hasn't experienced them yet? It's kinda hard to get attached to someone when we haven't been able to do that yet. Locke is no different than the Chief when we first played as him in CE.

The story's not so great, but multiplayer wise, this is the most addicting Halo since 3 for me. Excited for Forge, and hope the community is still booming by the time it's out.

Also at the time of my posting this Halo 5 has a metascore of 86 and the unweighted average of its critic scores is 85.8
