What would you consider game of the decade?

For me, Dark Souls. It really stands out to me compared to other games -- I love pretty much everything about it -- especially the amazing level design and philosophy behind the game.

It would be a 10/10 game if post Anor Londo was finished, but I personally find that excusable because of Bamco's cutthroat deadlines that forced the developers to rush it.

I honestly can't think of another contender for game of the decade.

Dark Souls multiplayer forsakes any possibility of it being game of the decade for me. It also has yet to outlast its meme status, which is necessary to mitigate bias or rose-tinted goggles when talking about the game.

I think it's too early to say right now. There are a lot of great games out. You gave me an idea for a different thread, though.

Nothing is really that special to me tbh. Smash 4 is good but it doesn't have anything particularly amazing about it like Melee's absurd skill ceiling, Brawl's Subspace emissary or 64's insane hit/shield stun. 8 Player smash is a great feature but doesn't really carry it much further in my eyes. Mario Kart 8 is fun but the Online mode was ruined by cheating way too early in its lifespan and Halo 5's entire first year alone holds it back from being viable. I'll call ya once BotW, Yooka Laylee and Sea of Thieves have dropped.

for 2010 onwards with years left... I honestly don't know. Mass Effect 2 was great. Uh... eh, idk.

What is so great about The Witcher 3? Is it a fun, engaging game or is it typical AAA drivel, with a focus on a cinematic experience?

As much as I hate it, I can't deny the impact Halo 1 had on consoles. I personally like Metal Gear more so. But I'm probably not thinking of some other games I loved.

If impact is the only factor in determining the game of the decade, then perhaps Halo isn't the worst choice--but I wouldn't necessarily say Pong is the best game of the 70s. I think there are other factors that should be examined as well, such as longevity (has it aged well) and the game's content itself.

You might love Halo: CE, but it aged like a fruit fly.

Metal Gear is a more solid choice, but personally, I'd give it to Wind Waker.

A game of the decade should have an exemplary multiplayer AND single player experience long after its shelf life. Halo: CE had a very weak single player campaign, which should automatically bar it from discussion.

You might think that's an unreasonably high standard, but we're talking game of the decade here.

Combat Evolved/Custom Edition had a pretty big population well into Halo 3's lifespan. It didn't really begin to drop off until Reach launched, and I recall over 50,000 players at peak times during early 2010. Considering its online lasted well over 6 years (and therefore most of the Decade) I'd say it doesn't need to stack up once the Decade has finished.

Looking at it now, CE is an incredibly shithouse game to play without a few friends. But it had a lot to offer before the turn of the decade.

'Game of the decade' is pretty loosely defined here. Somebody needs to decide if a game should be judged based on the game experience during its peak compared to other games, what it's like to play now or both.
