sports games are among the dumbest genres in video games
The only sports games I would ever recommend to people that actually have effort (as in I feel the devs actually try to put effort into it) are FIFA, and MLB: The Show.
garbage

Sorry, but that's not the football I'm on about. I don't like American Football that much because there is too much stopping. I'm on about soccer, which is constantly in motion (and if you want, I could describe showing emotion and desperation in that). I understand the point you're making now, but I still don't see how a fighting game really does that, the same way you're explaining it with football in the most basic of forms.
I don't really know how soccer works beyond "kick the ball into the net," so I can't really comment on how expressive it is--but I've watched soccer games before, and it really doesn't look all that much different from other team sports with regards to its level of self-expression.

As you'd expect, fighting games have what you'd call "optimal" or "suboptimal" strategies--but what's considered "optimal" is so blurry and so varied. Oftentimes, there are dozens of optimal decisions you can make during every split second of a match. Which strategy you end up choosing will often depend on what kind of player you are, or how the player is feeling at the time. Sometimes, some players will go out of their way to commit to suboptimal strategies for the sake of self-expression. As in, they knew it would be a risky play; but they went for it anyway, because that's just how they roll. It's their personality.

Players like Mango, one of the top five best Melee players in the world, have gone on record to state that you can tell what his mood is by how he plays during his matches. If he's angry, he plays this way. If he's cocky, he plays that way. If he's scared, he plays another way. They're not just subtle differences--they're very distinct, if you know how Melee is played. If you don't know how Melee is played, you probably won't see anything, but it's there.

I've been exclusively talking about emotions, but really, fighting games can express a whole lot more than that. ZeRo, the greatest Smash 4 player of all time, has stated that each one of his matches are like having an intimate conversation with his adversary. It's not always clear what's in each player's head, but it's easy to tell when two players are communicating to each other through their gameplay, and it's enthralling to watch.

The most basic and easily understood example I can think of is a display of disrespect. In a fighting game, "disrespect" refers to when a player gets so cocky, so confident in his or her own skill, that he feels that he can do anything to his opponent--no matter how stupid or risky--and the opponent will be too incompetent to retaliate. For example: Jumping into a Ryu's Shoryuken range, knowing full-well that he can use that move, but expecting your opponent to fuck it up because of incompetence, nerves, or whatever else.

YouTube

Watch this match. It's only 4 minutes.

A cocky player from South Korea called Poongko defeats Daigo in a huge upset. Poongko is a very expressive player. Note the large number of disrespectful plays that he makes during the set, and note the crowd reactions.

I agree with you that video games CAN be art, but that one is still heavily debated.
Also, I dunno. I think it's fairly indisputable that games are art--I'd probably classify them as the lowest form of art, so there you go. But yeah, I don't think there's any good argument you could make to suggest that they aren't.

I'm pretty much the only one.

But most of the games I love require you to use your brain?

Maybe RTS games just suck.

Well, I play games for fun. I don't need to be able to express myself. If it's fun, it's fun. The end. And Jono. I agree, but I was trying to be nice.

You hate 99.5% of games though so your argument is invalid.

And Starcraft: Brood War still remains the most competitive and most difficult game to master. There's a reason why the game was extremely popular for nearly 10 years cause not only is it fun to play, it was also fun to watch.

Fucked up the quotes FML

So I've heard. I've never sat down and watched a competitive Starcraft game, though.

Verb I get what you're saying, but I'm just way too lazy to respond.

In terms of soccer, it can be expressive mainly because of high pressure moments. Time is ticking down, only a minute left, and you're throwing all your players forward, desperately trying to get something into the net

and you could either score in the last second and slip shit, or lose disappointingly due to being counter attacked and scored on, thus losing everything for sure. That's just a brief example.

Maybe it's because I've been exposed to more competitive fighting games than competitive football, but finding any semblance of self-expression in a team sport would be so extraordinarily difficult for me. Everything seems so planned out rather than spontaneous, so it all seems less human to me. All the players are just little cogs in the machine that makes up their team--there's no sense of individuality or personality, and it's just so hard to be invested in something like that.

Even if there was a documentary about each player's life story, I couldn't be expected to watch all that shit. In the world of fighting games, you get to know each player through osmosis. I never read up about any of my favorite players' lives--but I could tell you their stories, because it's just something you catch onto.

I guess what I'm saying is that the FGC is more accessible, but at the same time, it's not. I dunno.

It's a hard subject to discuss.

I get what you're saying. Individuality is much harder to find in a sport that requires a team effort, as opposed to something more solo.

A sport like Tennis would be easier to find individual personality but even with Hockey or Baseball being a team sport if someone named all of the players on the roster I could likely give a brief explanation of their personality or a bit of their backstory. It's not as much as a tennis player or a smash player but it's still there.

It just sucks because pundits actively try and crush player personality. It sucks and I hate it.
YouTube

This homerun essentially won the series for the Blue Jays and is regarded as one of the greatest moments in Toronto Sports history. It came after the game itself was one of the strangest anyone has ever witnessed. Not to mention this came after 23 years of not being in the playoffs. I can easily say this is the most excited I've been... possibly ever.
But people still debated whether the player was right or not in throwing (flipping) his bat after hitting it. A celebration of doing something truly incredible and people wanted to reprimand him for it.

I'd reckon that if there were more moments like this, or even players with personality and charisma you'd be a little more interested in sports.

Speaking of amazing things in sports, I still think this is one of the most crazy things in sporting history.

https://youtu.be/2ccHdSd4Xq8?t=322

Final seconds, have to score to win the title for the first time in over 40 years, and quite literally steal it from their arch rivals who have their shirts off, thinking they won it.

That was legitimately one of the most impressive things I've seen... Just caught them sleeping... They were so sure they had won... Wow.
