What's with Bethesda showing almost no new footage of Fallout 4?

I'm not questioning that the game is polished or whatever, I just think it's really odd that for what appears to be a huge, dynamic, and varied environment we've only seen about 5 minutes into the start of the game. Usually we'd get some sort of gameplay montage showing various builds and plot elements, but even the trailer is largely limited to one of the first encounters (using the power armor).

Maybe they're doing it to keep hype up (somehow), but it's kind of annoying to see them release new videos and press packages with literally the same videos over and over.

They want to show very little, so that nearly everything we do is a surprise and new to us.

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
The same happened with Skyrim back in 2011 IIRC. There was only two trailers and a 15 minute gameplay demo leading up to its release.

Now, whether or not you think Skyrim is good, you can't fault the game for its quantity, even if it lacked in quality.

So to answer the OP, I think they are indeed just trying to keep everything suspenseful. We may or may not see more content the closer we get to release.

Bethesda always does this, it's nothing new. They'll be posting those SPECIAL videos every two weeks up until launch but that's pretty much it besides a launch trailer maybe.

It is a little tiresome but it did occur to me that I'd rather just have the odd tiny snippet of information in the run up so that you get to dive in almost completely fresh rather than certain games where you already know the in and out of it by day one.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
Well they know it's going to sell and it's typical Bethesda anyway

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
That's the new kind of advertisement that everybody's going about. Don't show anything at all until the thing is almost out. Star Wars VII is doing the same thing, and so was Persona 5 until the release date got pushed back.

The less footage you show about the game, the more hype its going to build

I neither fear, nor despise.
They want to show very little, so that nearly everything we do is a surprise and new to us.
They want you to think the game is bigger than it really is, like destiny

as much as i dislike bethesda's games, that certainly won't be the case
all of their games have a lot of stuff

the quality of that content is a different matter entirely

That's the new kind of advertisement that everybody's going about. Don't show anything at all until the thing is almost out. Star Wars VII is doing the same thing, and so was Persona 5 until the release date got pushed back.
It's the new kind of advertisement because people learn from mistakes.

Movie trailers often reveal the whole story, from start to finish, only leaving a few elements unknown, but that completely ruins the movie. If you know that people are gonna buy your game, then why not do things with the audience's best at heart?

Only they've found that that actually increases revenue.

who are they?   Also, I don't doubt that, but it still ruins the movie.

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
I wonder why they're trying so hard to keep their content hidden. It's fucking Fallout. They could produce a half-hour trailer of nothing but gameplay and that still wouldn't show much of the game.

They want to show very little, because the game was developed with large scope but little depth, and once you see something once, there's no joy in seeing it again. As is characteristic of sandbox, and Bethesda games in particular.

It's funny because yesterday they had the companion interview, and today they revealed 2 songs from the game and an interview with the composer. On top of the bi-weekly SPECIAL videos this seems to be their form of marketing.
