This is why Mods are the best thing to happen to gaming.

But my point is that modding can make a bad game good for PC users.
That's the problem. Part of it that I see, anyway. By continually using mods, you're sending the message to game developers that they don't HAVE to put in any work to make the game enjoyable--the community will do it for you.

That is FUCKING bullshit.
I don't think that's Bethesda's mentality, the only real problem I have with Bethesda as a company is how they choose release dates. Anyway, I think mods are great because they make great and finished games even better. Mods can stuff like new armor and weapons, they can fix something like how the character swings their sword.

Yes, some developers might use the community to finish their game, but most developers just simply haven't thought of this one cool thing that the mod adds, or the mod might not have been lore friendly, but it made the game more fun.

Yes, but the component that allows me to adjust what I can "fucking see, with my eyeballs, on the screen" is sometimes in an .exe separate from the game itself, and sometimes it's not even that, but is a text file that I have to edit manually.  That would make it an edit to a game done from outside, or *pulls sunglasses* a mod.
Well, then I would just make the argument that you shouldn't have to do that. I don't play on PC, so I can't sympathize with having to do that.
Quote
But why not let the developers decide whether or not they consider it "pissing on their art"?  Why are you insulted on their behalf?  If they're giving out the tools to the public, I doubt they see it that way.
Who isn't letting them? I've expressed the exact opposite sentiment. I said, yeah, I don't care if the developers don't consider it to be pissing on their art. I disagree with them.
Quote
It's also pretty snobbish, and just plain wrong, to believe that your own creation is infallible, and to believe that no one is better at your job than you.
That's not the point. I don't think my creations are infallible, or that no one can do the job better than I can. But that doesn't change the fact that I'd still take it offensively, because regardless of who can do the job better, it's still my piece of work.

Skipping all of the arguing since I only read the first page of Verb's thing, I can agree with him (as I have before) about mods and what not. A game like Skyrim for example. I think they left modding available to make dungeons, but obviously people had to do far more to make the game better by itself (better mechanics, final boss fight, etc). Hell, even in one update Bethesda took the best mods and threw em in an update. That's just the devs failing to think of it on their own and probably not pay the people who MADE it better.

That being said, if a game takes that Minecraft or Halo Sandbox (forgive me for the bad analogy) approach and offers you a game that is GOOD (Arma on its own is good, people), but leaves the tools for people to do their COMPLETE own thing? I say why not? Let the community come up with witty ideas that are completely different and embrace that community.

The difference is, for the Skyrim example, they needed mods just to make their game more playable, or fix mechanics (PC port anyone)?

Where as ARMA has a game that is solid, well developed, and fun, but offers people the tools to do a complete new game at the same time.

I dunno if that makes sense. I'm just saying that instantly saying Mods are bad (Verb), and people shouting that people who DON'T support/disagree with mods are wrong (everyone else), is a little too black and white to me. There is a way it is handled that makes it different in my eyes.
Bottom page is a bitch

Mods for Bethesda have proven Bethesda didn't exactly do a grand job with Skyrim. If you need your community to fix flaws in your game that's been in development for god knows how long, that's sad.

Edit: I'm not saying Skyrim is bad, because it's not, but I wouldn't exactly say it's 10/10 RPG of the decade (if you can even call it an RPG at this point).

The only time I'd ever consider modding a game is if I've already played and beaten it a hundred times, and I'm bored of it.

But that's what sequels are for. And... Different games.

You don't like how you swing swords in Skyrim? Play a game where the sword is swung differently.
...That simple.

So would you say people piss all over Halo whenever they use Forge mode, in order to make maps that are better than the vanilla ones?
No, because Forge is an actual part of the game.
It's still the same concept. Bungie gave us the ability with Forge to modify the maps. Adding tanks to a map that doesn't have them is no different than adding vehicles or weapons to a game that doesn't have them. Bungie giving Halo Forge is no different than Bethesda having the constriction sets for the Elder Scrolls to mod them.

So, my question is. If somebody is inspired enough to put that effort in to mod a game, whether it be for something simple, or whether it's really thorough and well done.

What's wrong with that?
some graffiti art takes a lot of time and effort to make, and the end result is often beautiful

but it's still graffiti--it's vandalism

it's a little more acceptable for video games in the sense that everyone is entitled to use their own copy of the game for whatever purpose they choose

i'm just saying that i don't personally approve of it
if i was a game developer, and people were putting shit into my game that wasn't intended to be there, i would be offended

because they're not playing the game how i intended it to be played--they're ruining my art for their own entertainment

That's fair. Although technically you could spin it around another way. I mean think about it this way. Out of all the games out there, somebody chose to use your game engine. They chose to use your engine and what you made as the groundwork for their own idea.

Rather than be insulting, wouldn't that actually be somewhat honorary to you? Because usually, there's a lot of games and their respective sandboxes to choose from. Having somebody to pick yours, your groundwork, your framework, and build off of that.

To me that seems something to be proud of. That you've made something that somebody looked at from a differnt angle and modified. They were inspired to make something else from what you gave them.

And of course. Here's the real key thing.

Your game, your art, is still there. Technically, yes you could say that a mod is vandilism on a finished game. But that's the thing. There never just is, one copy of the game. Never one singular copy owned by only one person in the entire world that's overwritten.

Just like graffitti on train cars. Graffitti is never cleaned off train cars in my province. Know why? Because there's millions of other train cars out there. There are, standard, regular old train cars all over the place. Now, if there was only one train car left in existance, and somebody came up and sprayed the living hell out of it, then you could argue that it was an expressly shitty thing to do because you did that to the one, and only source.

Not forcing you to agree here or anything. I mean I myself don't particularily enjoy most mods either. They can crash your game and yadda yadda yadda. Too much hassle to instal when you could just play what works fine already.

But you can't neccessarily forget about the postitive side of the coin here either.

sure--if i was kindly asked permission by some yearning modder to fuck with my game, i would be flattered

but i'd respectfully decline if their idea failed to meet my vision
and if they proceed to fuck with my game anyway, then they're an asshole

if i like their idea, then it wouldn't be a mod anymore--i'd make it an official part of the game if it ended up being perfect

that's how i'd do it
if you're not gonna ask me for permission, i don't see how i could not take that disrespectfully

i realize that modern game devs encourage modding, and that's their right
but the way i see it, they're allowing a lot of misguided people to fuck up their games indiscriminately

obviously, i must just simply take my own art a lot more seriously than other people
maybe they don't even consider their games to be art

the main thing that i want people to take away from me with regards to this subject, or any subject revolving video games, for that matter, is that i'm not trying to FORCE my opinion on anybody--the reason it might seem like i am is because i am very militant and passionate when expressing these opinions, but i ultimately don't give a shit at the end of the day if anyone disagrees

i just never understand why, and that's frustrating

It's a simple reason. Conformity. People naturally conform to things. Ideas. Notions. Beliefs. Ways of doing things.

Present an opposing force, an opposing idea to somebody's conformity, even if the idea or the way of doing something is non harmful, non oppressive or imposing, people will automaticaly view it as a threat to their conformity.

They won't even view it as a threat.

They'll view it as something outside their way of doing things. When to them, what they conform to, what they find comfort in, is the only way to do things in their eyes.

They'll view it as something to attempt to fix for the benifit of the outsider to their circle.

For example. When it was Galileo or Isaac Newton who challenged a pre-concieved established idea that the earth wasn't flat or that the sun wasn't the center of the universe and that neither were we.

They were met with an uproar.

Because they challenged what people were comfortable with.

To give a clear cut example as clear as day the reason I started anything in this thread, the reason why I started talking, was because you presented an opposing viewpoint to mine. I automatically jumped in to reinforce and defend my established way of looking at things without even really thinking about it.

I didn't say, oh well shit he's wrong. I just said, hey, let's try and show the other side of things here and change that percieved as negative attitude.

And it's the reason why you reply back because my established way of doing things is impeding on your own conformity.

The fact is, people aren't very comfortable when you challenge what they're comfortable with knowing all their life. Even if you're non harmful about it.

Not quite. You know what the worst view regarding games would be?

Not playing them. Tossing them and all of their content off as nothing but pure garbage and continually trying to convince people to get rid of them.

And the worst part of it?

It's a fair standpoint. Not the garbage aspect of course. But that games can be an immense waste of time. Making it an extremely hard pressed argument to counter against because logically speaking, you could always actually accomplish something in the time that you spend playing games.

That my friend, is arguably the worst viewpoint here.

The mod is called, "Eridanus Insurrection." It's UNSCS vs Insurrectionists. No Spartans, no Covenant. This is about the insurrection before. So Marines, ODSTS, Insurrectionists, and Colonial Militia.

So far, the mod features:
Assault Rifle
Battle Rifle
Magnum
SMG
Shotgun
Rocket Launcher
Unarmed Warthog
Chaingun warthog
Transport Hog
Gausshog
Pelican
ODST Drop Pod with working displays showing landing zone and teammates
Highly detailed UNSC and ODST clothing and armor
Working Visr for ODSTs that will increase low light vision
Sweet William Cigars
Detailed clothing and body armor for Insurrectionists

Planned to have a fucking UNSC Frigate...

What's there is awesome. The weapons feel great. The sounds are great. The Models are great. All of this and the mod is still in fucking Alpha for god's sake.

Arma 3 mods, woop woop.
