Except with a gym membership you know what to expect. There's no hidden surprises or getting fucked like with games. With a game pre-order you really don't know what you're getting. Look at Aliens: Colonial Marines. You pre-order the game thinking you're getting what was shown in the demo and instead you get that game that's hardly anything like it. With pre-ordering you risk getting bait and switched. It's dumb to order something when you have no idea how it's going to turn out.

If people waited and bought the game after it came out then that tells developers how they are doing. If the ended up making a bad game then they are going to get hardly any sells. With per-ordering you are possibly supporting a bad game and are giving no incentive to the developers to try harder.
