Seems like a good list so far. Would've also expected Quake I to make an appearance.
A great game, but it didn't leave quite enough of a lasting impact to make the list.
I gotta disagree. Quake took the basics of Doom, added a console and shaped pretty much every FPS game that currently exists.

The Quake engine served as the basis for the entirety of Valve's Source engine, some 007 games, Medal of Honor, the later Wolfenstein games, Quake Wars, Rage, Doom 3, Prey, and pretty much all of the COD games.

Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are the godfathers of the FPS genre, but it's Quake that made it significantly faster, better, competitive and laid the foundations for pretty much all FPS games to come after. I personally don't think either of the three original games (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake) deserves to be the one landmark game for the FPS genre by itself. But if I had to pick the one that made the basic concept into what we have today, I'd go with Quake.
It built upon what Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM already did. It in itself wasn't revolutionary, and despite the fact that it did indeed bring FPS closer to the current day, it hasn't had the lasting recognition of Wolfenstein or DOOM. If you ask anybody, DOOM or Wolfenstein is that really old shooter. They are recognized and, unfortunately, Quake isn't.

Not to say that I wouldn't agree if Quake made the list, because you're right, it's a fantastic game. But at least for the first wave, the games that set the industry? I can see why it didn't make the list. At least yet.
id say DOOM is the more iconic of the two, in any case. it will definitely end up on this list methinks

I completely agree. There is not enough Doom in that hall.

It comes down to what the point of this list is, really. The games that most people recognize, or the ones that were actually the most influential to our current standard of games? Probably the first, unfortunately. Would be cool to see the opposite though. This is probably just going to turn into a handful of games that most people know in combination with those that sold the most copies.
Well, according to the criteria in the OP, it would be both. It has to be recognizable and influential. DOOM did both, but Quake is only strenuously recognized.

But at least for the first wave, the games that set the industry?

Seeing as how WoW was chosen over Ultima and Everquest there's nothing in here that says quake can't be chosen over Doom.

WoW is basically the COD of the MMO genre. The only thing it did was dumb it down to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Ultima and Everquest were the first MMOs basically, or at least the first two that were popular

And yet they don't have lasting recognition. That's the point.

I didn't say that it can't, it didn't. DOOM is already on the list while Quake isn't. I'm just trying to give a possible explanation for why it didn't. And despite how WoW led to the casualization of the genre, it is still considered the MMO even if people incorrectly believe it to be the first.

Sure they might not be as popular as they once were, but both are still going strong with a stable player base. The latter of which is actually getting a sequel here.

If you've been around the MMO black chances are you've either heard of them of played them at some point. He'll if you were old enough to play video games before 1997 you probably heard about them at some point too.

This is like comparing doom to cod and saying cod deserves to be on the list over doom because it's newer and more popular. Not because it was a major player in laying the foundation of the fps genre and considering everything on that list is significant for helping to lay the foundations of gaming and various genres  WoW is horribly out of place.

I don't oppose WoW being in this hall of fame, I oppose it being listed with a bunch of instrumental titles help to lay the foundations for the medium.

to be fair, wolfenstein predates doom, so

i don't think your CoD vs. doom thing was a terribly cogent analogy

Define "stable". They're alive yes, but that doesn't mean they have global recognition. I know what Ultima and EQ are, but I'm unfortunately a nerd who spends too much time playing and buying games. That doesn't mean that the average person today will know what it is, even if they heard the name somewhere.

I mean, like Verb said, Wolfenstein 3D came before DOOM. But DOOM is monumental for popularizing FPS, and it's widely recognized. That's why it's on the list and not W3D.
